Creating Bridges: Spirituality & Philosophy:
Lynn Andrews and The Path of the Heart

The Power Deck

by Lynn Andrews
The Power Deck: The Cards of Wisdom is the set of forty-five illustrated cards that I created in 1990. Variations of this Power Deck have been used throughout history by teachers seeking to empower their apprentices with higher consciousness. The mystery schools, the Sisterhood of the Shields, magicians, and European shamans have used some secret form of the Power Deck for centuries. I understand from my teachers that cards are shifted and changed depending on one's time of life and the learning that is needed. These cards are for divining your truth and power in a way different from using a tarot deck. Using the Power Deck builds self-esteem, one of the most important components of power, by examining both the positive and the negative aspects of yourself, the pieces of your power and personal puzzle that are present and those that are missing.

I wrote about my first experience with these cards of wisdom in my book The Woman of Wyrrd. It was explained to me by the women in the Sisterhood of the Shields that the cards were originally used to impart knowledge and teachings about the Tree of Life. The Tree of Life teaches about the evolution of the spirit. The cards illuminate the sacred flow and system of power in life. They help people to reach inside themselves to find their inner truth. The faces of the cards-the beautiful paintings-represent your physical body. The message on the other side of each card represents the truth of your spirit. Within the teachings of the Tree of Life, ultimately, body and spirit are one. The cards, like the Tree of Life, mediate between the life force of Mother Earth and that of all life forms.

I first encountered the Power Deck in my work with Grandmother in sixteenth-century England. (Woman of Wyrrd) Catherine was my name at that time. Grandmother always stressed to me the importance of seeing that truth is always the same. Simply, truth is what is, and it remains the same throughout the ages, no matter in what time or place you live. What does matter, she told me, is that you become enlightened.

From the Woman of Wyrrd:

Grandmother reached into her pocket and withdrew a lovely carved box, which contained a deck of cards given to her many years ago by her teacher. Grandmother called it simply the Power Deck. "These cards are a way of finding the source of truth within oneself," she said. Grandmother then placed the box in front of me and nodded.

I opened the box slowly, as if I expected something to jump out at me. The inside was lined with red velvet. The cards were made from thinly pressed wood or leather. Inlaid on one side of the cards were beautiful pictures.

Grandmother instructed me to shuffle the cards gently while thinking of a question I would like answered. I was then to fan the cards out in front of me, picture side up, and hold my palms slightly above them. "Pick the card that calls you and read the answer to your question," Grandmother said. "But first, remember that in this teaching the cards represent your outer body and the message represents the truth of spirit. It is the same with the Tree of Life. The cards teach that ultimately your spirit and your body are one."

As I held my palm over the cards, I felt uncanny heat radiating from them. Then one card with beautiful gilt flowers on it caught my attention. I picked it up and turned it over. The message was "In Death is the secret to life."

The message so directly answered my question that I was astonished. I told Grandmother that my question had been "What is the secret to a happy life?"

"See, the Power Deck never lies," Grandmother told me. She explained that each time we study and use the Power Deck, we create light like the sparks from a fire. "These sparks revitalize the life force that has been given to us by the land so that we may live. I must tell you that the source of all power is hidden in our mother, the land. To live we must partake of our mother's body. To engage in sacred study completes the circle. Studying or using the cards of wisdom, learning more of truth, gives off light. The beings of the earth live in a give and take, a flow of light, that becomes life force and then becomes love. It is law."

Exercising sacred wisdom in your everyday life literally creates the light that revitalizes the earth's life force. We owe a great debt to the earth and the animal kingdoms. Shamans and magicians have used the Power Deck throughout the ages to give to nature, to replenish the power it gives us. This life force is energy and becomes light, and finally, eternal love.

Prayer

In preparation for consulting the Power Deck, I wrote a prayer. Prayer, as my teachers and I practice it, always entails an opening of the heart. Prayer arises from a sense of gratitude for all that is-for the magnificence and the miracle of life.

A Prayer for Daily Empowerment: A Daily Affirmation for Your Path of Power

I am a new warrior of spirit.
I exist in a world of sacred balance.
I balance with one foot in the physical world
Of material substance,
And one foot in the dimensions of spirit and sacred life.
My course is set by my ally-the winds of time.

Mother Earth gives me life force-
The life blood of my sacred body.
The plants give me nourishment and healing
As I ride the windhorse of my intent-
My sacred warrior's transport of buoyant joy-
Into a new and unknown world of harmony.

I am truly a new warrior,
An androgynous spirit being of light.
My weapons are the shields of awareness,
The symbols of ancient truth and the sacred giveaway.
Like the angels that surround me,
Few see me for who I really am.

I do commerce in the world.
I raise my family.
I live a life dedicated to freedom.
I immerse myself in the physical world,
So that one day I can give it up,
Because I can give up only something that I truly have.

People learn from me through example,
Because of the integrity of my own life and spirit.
I move into the world with confidence and wisdom.
I am always open and learning tools of knowledge,
And I share these tools with my sisters and my brothers.

People learn from me through example,
Because of the integrity of my own life and spirit.
I move into the world with confidence and wisdom.
I am always open and learning tools of knowledge,
And I share these tools with my sisters and my brothers.

I am a warrior of the light,
And I live the integrity of that truth with great care
And from a center within myself that is pure goodness-
The embodiment of the peaceful soul.

I walk with confidence
The path of heart and personal power. Ho!

Power Deck card for April

The Power Deck card I pulled for this month is CENTERING. It is from the north of the sacred wheel of life. It is essential as we move through the changes and transition of our life that we maintain our center.

Never leave your center. Count your good points as well as your bad. What is good and what is bad are most often purely relative. If you sense a weakness within yourself, explore it. It may become the source of your greatest strength. As you sit like a sacred Buddha amid the pandemonium of life, always remember that the situation or person who has the ability to upset you the most, to pull you off center, is your greatest teacher in the process of centering. Such negativity can become your addiction. Center yourself in your power, and release your need for constant distraction from your center.

Centering is one of the most important and vital aspects of your spiritual training. Whatever your personal spiritual path, learning to find and maintain your center will be key to your understanding of the higher realms of consciousness. The image on this card is of the Buddha sitting serenely in the midst of a 21st century western metropolis. To the shaman, the Buddha signifies the higher self, the self that has grown out of the need for worldly distractions. What distracts you from living within your center? Most of us do not want to actually leave our lives or our families to go off and live in a cave at the top of the world, so it is essential that we find our center right where we are.

You can ascend to the world of spirit and the higher self through centering, meditating and focusing on the inner world. It takes discipline and time but you can do it. Focus on your inner self and by learning to stay centered, you can transcend the daily distractions and not be attached to them. Simply witness them as they whirl around you.

It is a true test of power and is one of the most important aspects of your training on your path to power.

As you consider your own center, I want to remind you of my teacher, Agnes Whistling Elk, taught me. "There are some things you can't explain with words. That's why you must learn two ways of looking-one with your eyes and one with your dream body."

How do you "see" the center of your own life?

I send you joy and spirit on your path of heart and personal power.
