| Holding Analysis Together: The Parts Becoming The Whole |

This is the horoscope of actor Tom Cruise, born July 3, 1962 at 3:06 PM, EDT in Syracuse NY.

The First Impression When someone walks into your vision, there is almost always an instinctive formulation of a first impression. So it is with a horoscope. With Cruise, we have a dramatic first impression to register not only from the horoscope wheel but also from the aspect grid!
The wheel shows us a preponderant emphasis of the Southern Hemisphere, above the horizon. This suggests immediately the potential for being taken advantage of, being victimized by others' whims, being pushed around. It is a vulnerable position within life development, and it usually motivates fight-back resources that become very pronounced.
The aspect grid shows that the Moon does not make a Ptolemaic aspect with any planet (conjunction, sextile, square, trine, or opposition)! I've named this (or when the Sun is without Ptolemaic aspect) the signification of a dissociation complex: it is extremely hard for the person to fit into the environment, to find his place, to be understood and even to understand himself. There is loneliness within meanings that are all too often. themselves inscrutable.
Feel how the potential for being pushed around, victimized, goes together with the sense of dissociation.
Cruise had a difficult childhood, his family moving at least a dozen times, changing schools and peer groups constantly. He was the third of four children. He had dyslexia and did poorly in school. He was up against a lot.
The Sun-Moon blend With the Sun in Cancer (life energy devoted to achieving emotional (home) security and the Moon in Leo (a proud prince/king (princess/queen) complex, needing appreciation, applause and honor), the energy for emotional security takes on self-dramatization -acting out the needs for appreciation and love. There is usually a show of "rightness" that helps with understanding and acceptance by others. The impression of pride and self-confidence is given and others believe it.
Cruise's Moon is very close to the Midheaven, strengthening it even as it dominates development (by virtue of being without aspect, i.e., peregrine). This fortuitous Sun-Moon blend would become his fortifications against painful dissociation and potential victimization in/by the environment.
Key, formative measurements Three major brush strokes begin to define the portrait further.
First: Saturn-retrograde, the phenomenology of the father-relationship syndrome, carrying with it, through the lack of attentive, guiding, supportive love, the registration of inferiority feelings, loneliness, and the sense of routine under-achievement. This is a strong focus on and reflection of the fractured relation Cruise had with his father.
We see that that Saturn is not only conjunct the parental axis but the Lunar Nodal axis as well. When Saturn is conjunct or squares the Nodal axis, we know the mother dominates the family, runs the show. This could very well have been Cruise's stirrup on which to ride strongly into development with an early awareness of pride, in spite of difficulties, and to whip personal resourcefulness into meaningful self-defining dimensions.
Another key here is the defense mechanism of the Grand Trine: see that the Sun, Neptune and Jupiter are involved in a Grand Trine in Water, which registers as a closed circuit of emotional self-sufficiency. On the one hand, this isolates Cruise from easy relationships -a furthering of the dissociation complex- but it also fortifies him within his own world, supporting the confidence, pride, and even arrogance of the Moon in Leo.
We see that the Neptune factor is square to the Midheaven, most often an immediate announcement of creativity. This sure here because of the supportive over-statement of five Quintile aspects!
Vocational Profiling The Neptune rising in the Ascendant, involved within the Grand Trine, dispositing Jupiter, also in the Grand Trine, quintile with Uranus, quindecile with Mars (charisma), and square the Midheaven introduces enormous creative channeling into the profession to eventually establish grand new status for himself in the world. -Gradually now, we see the Moon in Leo being fortified in its development of the prince/king complex. Drama is introduced. Play-acting. The performing arts. -Note how the Sun and Moon are in mutual reception: each "happy" with/for the other, perhaps the most supportive Sun-Moon blend of all 144 possibilities!
Gradually, a poor beginning of development witnesses the building of resources through development in time, defining the direct line between seed and bloom.
Extra dimensions With the Sun-Moon blend accentuating the Moon-ruled 9th House, with the presence of Scorpio on the Ascendant, and Pluto opposing Jupiter, natural ruler of the 9th; with the idealistic/perfectionist conjunction of Mercury and Venus -a dominating, "peregrine island" making no other Ptolemaic aspects in the horoscope, but with Venus quintile the Ascendant-we sense a spiritual dimension about Cruise. It is a well-spring -the energy of existential mysteries- of finding out how he belongs, oh-so-important to him in the face of the dissociated complex.
Cruise was/is described as religious; even attending a Franciscan year of school study at age 14. In adult life, he is a vocal proponent of the Church of Scientology.
The Pluto opposition with Jupiter always suggests enormous resourcefulness. It is an echo of the Uranus quindecile to Jupiter, presenting to us the intense focus Cruise has upon proving individuality, his self-worth (Jupiter rules the 2nd). --That sense of life development embraces the profile we have developed here. It all holds together.
*** When organizing the horoscope, we must keep in mind continuity within development and the common sense of inter-relationships among behaviors and values. One deduction leads to another, relates creatively to another, often causally, in reaction or in adjustment, all drawing upon the whole, the gene pool (if you will) that is the horoscope. -Ask what emerges because of what has already emerged? How does the inter-relationship of the parts define the whole?
The art of astrology is not in measurement, but in synthesis and appreciation of human development. Our objective as artist analysts is to reflect and support developmental understanding to the client. We must be logical and clear to do the miracle justice.
