Creating Bridges: Spirituality & Philosophy:

CHOICES: The Art of
Conscious Creation

by Teri Harris Saa
Dear Readers,
Thank you for your wonderful letters and questions. I've picked out a couple of interesting ones to answer this month.

Dear Teri,
I am in a business partnership with someone who talks big, but never follows through on his promises. I have put my heart and soul, not to mention my money into our business. It seems that I do all of the work. When I confront him, he somehow makes everything my fault, makes me feel guilty for questioning him, and then gives me another project to do after which he disappears. This has been going on for months. I can see the problem, but I can't seem to get let go. I want this business and I want this man as my partner.
Signed,
Lindsey

Dear Lindsey,
My question to you is WHY? Why do you want this man as your partner? Obviously, you can see that there is a serious problem. He is making you his slave and you are allowing it. Ask yourself why you are willing to give yourself and your power away. What benefit are you truly receiving? And, most important, what about going out on your own causes you fear? After you have honestly answered these questions, perhaps you will be able to see the situation from a different perspective and then make a more beneficial choice for your life. Good luck.
Blessings,
Teri

Dear Teri,
There are so many issues I could talk about, like hunger, poverty and the potential for war, but what is bothering me most at the moment is the rudeness and apathy of sales clerks and people in the service industries. It is the holiday season, a time of goodwill, but the idea of goodwill seems to be lost on so many. What is the problem? What has happened to the work ethic?
I am in my 60's and have been in this country's largest service industry for over 30 years. I work in a government office where I interact with people in need everyday. I was taught, and truly believe, that it is my privilege as well as my duty to serve each person as best I can. I give my "all" to each claimant. But, unfortunately, my type of service ethic is rare. Why is that? I have tried to understand, but I just don't.
Signed,
A Confused Human

Dear Confused Human,
Congratulations. You have just taken a step toward awareness and conscious creation. Enjoy the journey for you will learn much and make the world a better place because of your inquiry.

I must agree with you-it does appear that the service industry, both the private sector and government institutions have compromised their ability to provide good customer service. In fact, "Customer Service" has become trite and meaningless, in lieu of the corporate "bottom line." It concerns me that our society has made this change. What could have caused it? Maybe it happened during our years of coping with the futility of the conflict in Vietnam; maybe it is an effect of the "me" generation of the '80's; maybe it evolved out of our obsession with the materialism which began in the '90's. Whatever the initiating event may have been, the result is all too disturbing and (in)human.

How can we reverse this trend? How can we bring back the idea of respect and the concept of manners? The answer is as close as the face that looks back at you in the mirror. As you choose to be of service, to give your "all", your behavior will, eventually, have an effect on those around you. People naturally gravitate to goodness. So, don't give up. Become a campaign of one. Continue to make a difference in your immediate world. Put the "civil" back in "Civil Service." Follow The Golden Rule, be kind to a total stranger, just as you would be kind to yourself. Moreover, render every act of kindness with no expectation of getting anything in return. Show love for the pure, extraordinary desire to maintain your personal conviction in civility, compassion and humanity. Don't waste your time trying to understand why society has taken such a deviated perspective toward one another; any more than you would waste your time trying to understand why the sun shines on some days and not others. It doesn't matter. What does matter is how you give of yourself to others. Don't let yourself become a victim to society's ills. Shine your own special light into the darkness; for we all know that darkness cannot exist in light. Most importantly, be patient. To effect a change in society's perspective will take time. And there may be moments when all seems lost, but it is in those moments that you need to remind yourself that the answer to making the world a better place to live begins with you.
Blessings,
Teri
