Creating Bridges: Spirituality & Philosophy:

Days of Whine or Moses
by David Ault |

The transitioning from spring to summer has always been my favorite time of year. The days become longer, seemingly more fruitful and nature becomes a constant reminder of our innate ability to create renewal. These months offer holidays (Easter, Mother's Day) which allegorically represent the celebration of resurrection and birth. And we watch as many forms of Judeo Christian philosophies go through their practise of Lent.
This year, thanks to Mel Gibson, we were very much aware of Lent. And, unless you live under a rock, I don't think there was a person on the planet who didn't know the arrival of Ash Wednesday, the day that his movie, The Passion of the Christ opened.
For me, a metaphysician and Religious Science minister, Lent seemed to come and go without much fanfare. I was also guilty of mispronoucing it - my not-so-laid-to-rest Texas twang wanting to call it LINT. Kind keepers of proper pronunciation reminded me that lint was something you cleaned from your dryer or navel. Lent was the recognition of 40 days of fasting and prayer starting on Ash Wednesday and ending on the day before Easter.
This year I became a Lent participant and embraced those days with the acronym Let's Eliminate Negative Thinking - a time to pray with the presence and fast from the problem.
There is nothing in the Judeo Christian Bible that refers to Lent but there are many things that point to it as a spiritual practise.
Most of us can't put on the calendar when our crucifixions are coming, but they are coming. Life on earth is filled with set-backs, challenges and losses. It just seems as though that is a part of the mystery of the human curriculum. These things happen.
But the master teacher Jesus said to "be of good cheer" for there is a power within you that is greater than the things that happen to us in the world. We have come into this human experience to overcome, to transform, to resurrect and be changed.
I don't know about you but I need more than one stretch of 40 days per year to adopt the practise of praying with the presence and fasting from the problem. I need this mindful act to be an everyday way of life. So, even though Lent ended on the calendar last month, I have chosen an ongoing commitment to praying with the presence and fasting from any perceived inadequacy that a hurdle may present.
The idea of Lent is an invitation to prepare ourselves; not for the crucifixion but for the glory of resurrection. I don't believe there is glory in wallowing in the mistakes of our past for we are charged to rise up, to be transformed by the renewing of our minds.
The master teacher Jesus showed us that there is nothing to fear in death; the crucifixion, the allowance of once and for all burying our past mistakes. The power is in the resurrection - the invisible, organizing, creative, dynamic, all-sustaining principle; the Christ, Otman, Buddha, the thing Itself, the omnipresent power of good does not die. We are here on this planet, in this body, to be transformed by that power, to be uplifted, to take the hurdles in life and jump them.
In the Bible, 40 is metaphorically the number used to represent the time it takes to transform and move to the next level. It is a time where we prepare ourselves for a big change.
Remember the flood? The 40 days and 40 nights of rain represented the time it took to cleanse race consciousness.
Another 40; Moses goes up on top of Mt. Sinai (mountaintop meaning an exalted state) where he prays for 40 days and 40 nights. After that time period he descends with the Ten Commandments. This same Moses begins leading his followers from Egypt to the Promised Land, a journey that took 40 years.
Now people that I know who have done this tell me that to walk it takes about 12 to 13 days; a day and a half by car. I believe this original trek is where all the jokes about not asking for directions came in to being. So what was the problem?
They had daily sustenance, manna from heaven. They had the Ten Commandments; a guideline for how to live. They had a leader. They had everything they needed to facilitate getting to the Promised Land, but the arrival seemed to elude them.
Perhaps it took so long because they could not stop complaining. It's true. If we consider scripture, then we must look at the revelation of how they "murmured onto themselves."
Some of us have been wandering in "the desert" longer than need be because of our murmuring or whining. We have been released from addictions. We've had all sorts of healings, epiphanies, demonstrations of good. We've been transformed out of abusive relationships and yet we still whine and complain. Wallowing in that state of consciousness will continue to elude us from experiencing our promised land. Whining will prevent us from clearly following the leadership of a Moses that forever wants to guide us through our hurdles.
Establishing a practice of fasting from the problem and knowing that hurdles and self-imposed fears have no power over our own internal knowing, can set us free to arrive and live in our much deserved promised land.
Even Jesus before starting his ministry, retreated into the desert for 40 days and 40 nights and then emerged to create one of the most unforgettable marks on the consciousness of humankind. He overcame all hurdles, temptations, doubts and negativity by repeatedly saying, "Get thee behind me Satan" Get thee behind me all things negative, all things less than the miraculous power that is within.
So what is your hurdle or issue that keeps you wandering in the desert? What is your attachment to smallness that keeps you from walking in the shoes and leadership of Moses? Why not speak to those illusions with the authority of a master and say, "Get thee behind me!" Go ahead, try it. Get thee behind me fear of the unknown. Get thee behind me issues of abandonment. Get thee behind negative, unloving beliefs about my body. Get thee behind me any and all attachments to lack for I choose to have my resurrection right here and right now.
The metaphysician, Ernest Holmes wrote in Creative Mind and Success to "Begin to blot out, one by one, all false beliefs, all idea that we are limited or poor or miserable. Use that wonderful power of choice that God has given to you. Refuse to think of failure or to doubt your own power, See only what you wish to experience and look at nothing else. No matter how many times the old thought returns, destroy it by knowing that it has no power over you; look it squarely in the face and tell it to go; it does not belong to you, and you must know; and stick to it ; that you are now free."
In other words; get thee behind me.
Whatever day you read this article, count off 40 days in your calendar and commit to telling your current issues or hurdles just exactly where they can go. Soon, you will enjoy the clarity and freedom of continual resurrection. See you in the promised land!
