Cleansing with Five Actions
|

The concept of internal cleansing is becoming more familiar to those in the western world though it has been practiced for thousands of years in India.
Cleansing is done to remove toxins from the body, to increase digestive fire and to prevent illness.
So, where do these toxins come from?
Many people feel that because they do not take prescription drugs and maintain a healthy diet, they do not require a cleanse. Toxins are not limited to chemical toxins; they also include undigested food that builds up and coats the walls of veins, intestines and organs. Food is undigested if we eat before our last meal is fully digested, or if we eat more than what our stomach can hold.
Vegetarian food takes about six hours to fully digest and meat can take up to twenty-four hours to digest. Obviously people eat more than once during a twenty-four hour period and eating before food is eliminated from the body overloads the body and slowly the body becomes coated with undigested food.
It is also very important to drink enough water and eat enough fiber to push food out of the intestines. Failure to do so results in improper elimination and, again, a built up of undigested food. If we continue this pattern of eating too much or eating before a meal is digested our digestive fire becomes weak and once that happens we slowly begin to develop ill health, it may begin with getting more colds, feeling weaker, aches and pains in the joints and slowly evolve into actual illness. Performing a cleanse in the fall and spring helps to reset the digestive fire and remove toxins from the body.
Some of the signs of toxicity include:
Feeling of restlessness Feeling tired or absence of energy Irritability Dry skin or rashes, boils or pimples Brittle hair and nails Aches and pains
The Cleanse Step by Step
Pancha karma is a cleansing process that involves the use of five types of treatment.
1. Snehana Ingesting oil in the morning to help cleanse the liver, and gallbladder and to help aggravate kapha or mucus so that it becomes, softened and can be eliminated To perform this step we mix together the juice of a lime, two crushed cloves of garlic and a bit of cayenne or chili powder. We drink this substance and can follow it with some orange juice. This helps to remove stones and bile from the liver. One can expect to see lumpy green waste after performing this part of the cleanse. Some people are not affected on the first day but see more effects on the second or third days. This simply means that your body may be too dry and instead of cleansing the liver, the oil is being absorbed.
2. Swedana or steam therapy helps to melt and eliminate toxins.
3. Purgation - use of cleansing herbs to help remove toxins from all of the organs and intestines. We will use a cleansing tea as well as a combination of clay and cleansing herbs. These are to be mixed with juice or water and taken in the early morning; one should not eat for half an hour after taking these herbs. The draw toxins out of the body and the clay helps to collect them into one mass and carry them out of the body.
4. Nasya application of oil to the nose to cleanse the head, purify the sense organs and balance hormones and mucus secretions. You may require doing this for three days in a row if it is the first time you have applied oil to nose and ears. It initiates cleansing from deep within these orifices and can cause foggy hearing until all of the waste material is removed.
5. Basti or enema is performed with al tea. Boil one spoon of the enema herbs in a litre of water, allow the herbs to cool to just above room temperature. Pour the tea into the enema bag and apply the enema. Try to retain the tea within your body for as long as you can to get the best results. It may be performed for one to three days
