Creating Bridges: Spirituality & Philosophy: |

Jesus's Foreign Policy

Tai Chi & Qigong have helped me assimilate a deeper meaning from my own childhood education of Christianity. The lessons I learned in Sunday school, bible school, confirmation education, etc. seem more "here and now" and real to me since Tai Chi & Qigong have helped me reach inside and see myself, my world, and my faith in a deeper more personal level, rather than on an "intellectual" or "book learning" level. This helps me base my faith against my own tangible reality, and observance of life experience, rather than just repeating words taught to me.
Some in America assert we are a "Christian" nation. I personally have noticed that America is actually a Buddhist, Islamic, Christian, Agnostic, and Atheistic nation, not to mention some Wiccans, etc. etc. But, having been raised as a Christian myself, my mind began to wander in the vein of "if we are a Christian nation, what does that mean?"
Last night as I watched the over 700 faces and names of mostly young servicemen, no older than my son, roll across the screen of ABC New Nightlines "the Fallen" Series, a realization dawned on me. When Jesus told us to "turn the other cheek" when facing aggression in life, he wasn't giving a "holier than thou" admonition to humanity. He was trying to give us a very practical way of dealing with life, that would allow us to avoid misery in our lives.
Many Christians, because they idolize Jesus, discount his suggestions to us as "other worldly" and beyond our ability to embody in our lives. But, it was Jesus himself who encouraged us not to do this. Jesus said "these and greater things will you do." Jesus strove to put us on the same level of possibility with him, and in fact even promised us we would do greater things then he.
After 9-11-2001 America had the world's heart in the palm of it's hand. Imagine if we had taken Jesus's advice and "turned the other cheek." Imagine the result if our President had gone before the world and said, violent solutions have no place in our world. Since the United States is the #1 exporter of weapons in the world today, we will now announce a unilateral ban on the exportation of weapons from the U.S., and will do so for one year giving other nations an opportunity to follow our lead."
Imagine if our President had gone a step further, on September 12th, 2001, and announced "We Americans will be cutting our military budget by $20 billion per year because this amount will end world hunger. We will immediately begin to end world hunger and encourage all other world governments to divert military spending to lifting the quality of life for humanity and our global environment."
This would have won us a world of friends. People all over the planet would have had a stake in seeing the long healthy life of America. However, this is not what happened. Where do we find ourselves today, because we chose the path of revenge? We've lost 700 of our children. Iraqis have lost tens of thousands of theirs. 5,000 of our American sons and daughters have lost limbs, had their faces blown off, etc. etc. We are losing between 4 and 5 billion dollars per month. In every country around the world America is held in contempt and feared.
Jesus had some great advice for us. I hope he wasn't casting his pearl's before swine. I don't think so. I have great hope for our nation. Let's open our hearts and minds to some good advice from a good person.
