Spiritual Mastery for the 21st Century

To Dream - Conversations
With The Higher Self

by Dr. Gwen MacGregor
"For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not. In a dream, in a vision of night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed; Then he openeth the ears of men and sealeth their instruction..." Book of Job, 33:14-16

The dreamstate of man, like its spirit, is a combination of spiritual, mental and physical forces unleashed through the unconscious to demonstrate higher powers of command. Many believe this doorway also brings us truths and realizations about ourselves that we might not be able to accept in our waking state but, when released through symbols, visions and flowing emotion, provide us a powerful teacher/mentor. As you may remember through your ancient history courses, mankind has always paid attention to dreams and omens. In many cultures, the shaman or head priest/priestess was called upon to make predictions through dreamstate visions as well as animal sacrifice. Leaders such as Caesar, Plato, Tecumseh, Washington and Hitler spoke often of visions they received while in dreamstate. It becomes clear to us at an early age that the dreams we experience are more than a result of sickness, a full stomach or abusive situations that send us running to sleep for escape.

Dreams are also associated with inner transformation, enlightenment and healing. To dream is a gift because it carries your personal education past all the relationships in your waking life and all the universities you attend in your lifetime. Many believe that dreams stem directly from the body's physical and mental states but, even science today admits a certain spiritual bond that carries the gift of vision to greater heights which in turn encompasses the ideas of precognition, prediction and lucid dreaming. Our ancestors believed dreams to be a sleep-state where human awareness meets spiritual oneness and opens up conversations with the dead.

Science tells us that three-quarters of the adult population dream in color with women more likely to express themselves in color than men. Where scientists used to limit dreamstate only to Rapid Eye Movement (REM), it is now believed that we are able to dream outside of that time. Through experiements done extensively after the 1940's, it was discovered that humans suffered more physically and mentally when deprived of their dreamtime rather than when they lost sleep in general. For many psychiatrists, this pointed out a direct correlation of need between the conscious state and a time to let go of one's worries and drift in the non-judgmental state of unconsious reverie. In fact, the impulses we receive in dreams appears to cover such areas of everyday life as relationships, intelligence capability, health, sexual identity and global tension. C. Jung and Freud along with many capable thinkers introduced to our minds the possibility that we are somehow able to tap into our own personal unconscious state of information as well as tap into the collective unconscious of man. The Age of Reason came to fruition in the minds of thinkers who relied upon their daydreams.

C. Jung especially devoted a great deal of research into discovering the ways humanity stays in touch with the collective unconscious pointing out to us that symbols and archetypes expressed through dreams are critical elements in teaching humans about what is really going on in their personal and spiritual development. The 20th century opened up many doors to dreamstate so that people might feel comfortable talking about their dreams as well as bringing them into therapeutic arenas whereby healing might be initiated. Once again the advent of the wisdom of the shaman on a global level reintroduced the historical concept of vision quest coupled with the powerful truths to be found in such journeying. It seems even the great minds of science cannot ignore the emotional and physical states that bombard its evening' rest!

When we first address dream interpretation, it is surprisingly similar to how we begin teaching meditation. As in acheiving a meditative state, there are the same warnings given about overindulging in food, spirits, drugs and interrupted sleep. We know elevated emotional states of distress or anxiety can filter into our bodies and effect our dreams. It is important that the body be well hydrated and comforted in the sleep state by introducing low lighting, a comfortable bed and low background noise. And remember the potent effect scent has upon inducing meditative states of consciousness.

Interpretation of dreams begins even before we sleep, with gentle direction given to the conscious state concerning the focus of our attention for the night. Place a pad of paper or tape recorder near your bedside so you can, at a moment's notice, jot down or record what you have experienced in your dreams. I encourage a dream journal - even if you only use it upon waking. And speaking of waking up, don't put your feet on the ground until you have had a couple of quiet moments to contemplate what you are feeling or may remember about the night's journey. Gentle new habits might yield a lot of creative material for continuing expansion of your character and destiny.

We cannot speak about lucid dreaming, nightmares, precognition and dreams of disembodiment without acknowledging the role of astral traveling. Our connection to God is absolutely a reality when we fully appreciate our etheric state during evening travel. How many of us have awakened to the thud of a rapid heartbeat, the sense that there is pressure upon the chest or simply fighting our way back to earthly awareness? The body's connection to its soul is absolute and is best felt when entering the sleep-state. All discussions around the meaning of our dreams can be related to several steps whereby we unravel some of the inner meaning of dreamstate for ourselves. We must begin always by preparing our body for rest as we stated above. View the rest state as healing time complete with a replenishment of minerals, nutrients, a positive attitude boost and a quiet time to speak with your God. Try to remember your dreams by writing them down immediately upon waking. It is known that part of the reason we forget our dreams so quickly is that the chemicals in the brain that encourage short-term memory gradually decrease during sleep. I am sure it is for the same reason we might not be able to stand inside of a nuclear reactor for long...we would be simply overwhelmed by the spiritual impulses. I think of this chemical loss as a safety valve for man.

When interpreting dreams, try to describe any action you "saw" going on before you. When you parse a sentence it is always good to find out where the verb is. What is the central activity going on in the dream? Then ascertain and write down the components or pieces to the puzzle. Next, ask yourself if there are any archetypes or symbols that could be considered personal or from the collective unconscious? For instance, if you frequently see the Sphinx in your dreams or a pyramid, these might constitute archetypal images for you and everyone else. Begin asking how any of the pieces may relate to your emotional, physical or mental states. Are you able to receive a greater picture of what is going on in the dream from the conscious to the unconscious levels? Lastly, remember the importance of that verb and put your findings into motion. Is there change being asked of you or even just encouraged? Do you need to share this dream with another? Have you had this dream before and did you miss the greater picture?

In directing our dreams and interpreting them we must think along broad as well as narrow levels. There is seldom one message to be had from any series of dreams. And by the way, did you know most dreams only last half a minute and seldom more than 45 minutes? This fact should show us that the space-time continuum in sleepstate is more like we would conceive of in spirit. Most conversations about dreams involve the three most common occurences: that of flying, falling or losing bodily function. And remember to address lucid dreaming - where you feel like you are part of the dream but, stand as an outside observer at the same time. Never forget your daydreams link you to your higher self as well. Cultivate woolgathering. You may find that it induces rapid trance-state activity besides showing you answers to nightly questions. Most of all daydream a lot, because it is just plain fun to do!
