The Holistic Reality of Synastry
|
|
|

Synastry is easily the most popular branch of astrology, surely because love is the most important psychological need in our lives. It follows suit that the study of relationship compatibility would be the most popular topic in astrology.
Any bookstore that carries astrology books is usually replete with books about relationships, usually of the shallow variety: "Aries and Cancer are not compatible." "Taurus and Virgo are very compatible." . But even when this approach is abandoned to include more advanced techniques, the astrologer often gets caught up in all kinds of techniques and measurements when gauging two horoscopes for purposes of measuring relationship potentials. What happens is that the use of these techniques leaves the people involved out of the picture and gives full focus to the horoscopes, as if the horoscopes are going to be doing the relating instead of the people.
Modern astrology demands an awareness of the holistic realities of human life. We have to see horoscopes as guides to assist people and not see the horoscope as a living organism with a heart, brain, and emotions. This is especially true in synastry because when people come together to relate intimately, they bring with them the sum total of all of their previous experiences and influences from birth to present. The experiences and influences from the environment and from parents can and does tend to throw a person off the idealized path of identity expression that is suggested by their horoscopes. It is, therefore, best to have as much background on two people as is possible because if you confine their potentials to that which you read in an astrology book, you do them a disservice. Besides, you do not know if one of the two people are acting out of their own will power or whether they are following the path that is best for them (as is shown in the horoscope).
Male Client
I had a pretty dramatic counseling session with two people for whom environmental influences from the formative years of development played a dominant role in the consultation.
The man represented by this horoscope was born to a single, drug addicted mother who gave birth to him at the age of fourteen. The early years of the man's life were full of despair, poverty, pessimism, and gloom. It was through these experiences, and more pointedly, through his mother's low standards, that he developed an early distrust of women.
The environmental situation that the man was placed in during his early years was filled with crime and all of the things that are typical in the areas of cities where disenfranchised people live. Following suit, my client was eventually arrested for shooting a man during a gas station robbery. However, he was rescued by a well-to-do family in the area. He married the daughter of this family and it is important to mention, for the sake of perspective, to mention that my client is Black and the well-to-do-family is of European ancestry because the social angle of this makes it more complex.
My client's wife changed after each of their three kids was born. Her attitude became possessive and her girth grew to a level of extreme obesity. They would eventually take separate bedrooms. There was no warmth in the marriage. She felt as though she had paid for him and kept him out of prison and he felt like a possession.
My client started doing very well in business, making well into the six-figure a year salary range
.over $250,000 a year through businesses that he started. However, a great deal of his entrepreneurial success was based upon the connections afforded him through the influence of his in-laws. The family held the key to the man's destiny because they were able to use their connections to prevent a term in prison. This is one messy situation - a man in a loveless marriage held together by necessity that he could not end.
As would be expected, my client began to have multiple affairs on a consistent basis, mostly for sexual gratification. A great deal of this extra marital activity was with prostitutes. Prostitutes aside, the other women were there just for sex with the clear understanding that he was a married man on the prowl. When you think about my client's mother, his marriage, his affiliation with women for sex who knew his marital status, the prostitutes, etc., it presents a profile of a troubled human. His environment has beaten him down, beginning with his mother. In actuality, it was the negative maternal relationship that started the ball of low esteem behavior rolling.

A quick glimpse of the man's horoscope corroborates the life reality. The lower hemisphere emphasis is highlighted by Neptune's placement in IV, which typically suggests some kind of deception or "lie" at the base of a person's existence. The lower hemisphere emphasis is emphasized by the Prince Charles-like bucket handle Moon in the 10th House. This Moon is super important because it also rules his Ascendant (his identity). Uranus' square to this Moon intensifies things by adding anxiety and urgency to identity awareness. Mars, ruler of X is quindecile the Sun and Pluto!!! And finally, we see Pluto's square to the Nodal Axis with its suggestion of a strong maternal influence upon his perspective.
Saturn, ruler of his 7th House, is squared by Pluto! The square of Pluto to Saturn is the most difficult aspect in the entire lexicon of aspects. When these planets are square each other and one of them rules the 7th House, the suggestions of relationship concerns are at their peak. Saturn's placement in the 5th House works with Pluto to suggest a rather severe sexual concern linked to the perspective of the man's self-worth, especially since Pluto is on the cusp of the 5th House. Nevertheless, there is a sexual obsession at work in his life (with prostitutes or women who serve the same purpose). The idea of a healthy, loving, reciprocal relationship is foreign to the man's awareness because nothing in his life had presented him with the modeling that is necessary to orient himself in that way. He was a very insecure, very distrustful man in intimate situations, always feeling as if his mate is one step away from leaving him, etc. Knowing this about the man is key and we cannot learn the kind of details about his life that I have revealed simply from looking at his horoscope.
Continuing, Venus is unaspected in Leo. The Sun is in Libra at the Aries Point. The man is a social butterfly but has no sexual stamina at all within the confines of normal loving relationships. His mind is tarnished with thoughts about inadequacy, sexually speaking. It is often very tough to have a healthy, fulfilling sexual life when your feelings about yourself are tarnished. This man is no different.
Mercury retrograde usually suggests subjective thinking; thoughts go in for personal evaluation and come out again reinterpreted. There are usually two operational themes at once. One thought or theme is kept in the back of the mind that all other thoughts refer to. In this case, with Mercury in the 4th House, there can be no question that the thinking has to do with those formative years of development and probably to his mother. Her voice is always in the back of his mind. But above all else, just think of the unrest that this kind of life creates for a person whose most urgent emotional need is for security, structure and sameness in life (Moon in Taurus). Fortunately for him, he has been able to find security within his career developments, which, to date, are considerable.
Pause for a moment. Let's say that you are a woman who is astrologically sophisticated. You have met my client at a party. He is charming and affable. He knows how to say the right things. You become attracted to him in time and things begin to develop intimately. He is driving a very expensive sports car and his cell phone is always ringing off the hook in regards to business. His clothes are top shelf. He would appear to be a "good catch." He gives you his birth time and you are off; you are examining those horoscopes, looking at the aspects between the two of you. You might see some fantastic things that show great promise between you. Let's say that his Mars trines your Venus and your Moon is in conjunction with his Sun. You are encouraged by this, right? But think about it for a second? What do you really know about this man in lieu of all that I have revealed in this essay?
Female Client

Well, I know an astrologically sophisticated woman who did meet this man! Let's look at her horoscope: At first glance, there is an obvious Grand Cross in Succedent Houses. When you see this, no mater what the planets are, you know that the life is going to center and hang upon concerns of love and worth. They are going to work at odds with each other somehow. In this case, Uranus in XI (an intense expectation and need for love) opposing the idealistic stellium of Sun-Mercury-Venus in V greatly intensifies the libido. Mercury's rulership of X and I makes it a very important planet as a symbol for her overall identity development (which is nervously anxious) that, no doubt, is connected to sexuality. Saturn, ruler of V, is quindecile the Moon in VIII, a compulsive tie-in between the two sexual Houses.
On the other hand, Neptune's placement in II, opposing the Moon in VIII, with Neptune ruling VII and the Moon ruling XI suggests that there is self-worth confusion in regards to relationships and how lovable the woman thinks she is.
This is the reality situation in this woman's (also my client) life. She was raped at the age of thirteen or so. Instead of receiving sympathy, her father asserted that she "deserved it because you dress like a tramp and act like a whore." The woman's reaction to that, even at a young age, was that she indeed WAS going to act in a manner that was as promiscuous as could be. A rampant sex life preceded a drug habit and the drug habit preceded crime. To date, the woman claims to have had over 300 sexual partners in her life. At one point in her life, she says that "I had two-a-day for over a month!"
The woman would eventually have three children by three different men and each child had a physical affliction (the upset related to the 5th house from the quindecile of Saturn-Moon). In her worst case scenario of the bad years, she attended a party, became extremely intoxicated from a number of drugs coupled with alcohol, entered a car with four men, had sex with them and was thrown out of the speeding car onto the side of a road in freezing cold weather! And all of this for someone whose fundamental emotional need in life is based on feeling special, noticed, and at the head of everyone's priority list (Moon in Aries).
Amazingly, with the Jupiter/Pluto midpoint (great success potential) being at approximately 21 degrees Cardinal, this woman has four planets at this midpoint. She has managed to convert all of her street knowledge into a career selling insurance. She owns her own firm and now makes five figures a month! It was through her success that she met the first client listed in this essay.
The Synastry

Her Uranus conjoins his Ascendant and his Jupiter-Mars opposition conjoins hers. Her Mars squares his Venus. These are indications of mutual excitability. It is clear that they are easily turned on by each other's physical presence. Her Nodal Axis lay across his Horizon line, which is one of the strongest synastric factors that can be found. It has a touch of karma about it and dimensions about the relationship that are not easily understood. His Jupiter squares her Midheaven - he has been very helpful to her business. A Draconic analysis of the two horoscopes reveals his Saturn upon her Sun. The man is meant, on a deep soul level, to teach this lady an important lesson. On the other hand, her Saturn opposes his Mars so there is a great deal about her that is meant to put the brakes on him, as well. The problem measurement that threatens everything is her Pluto squaring his Saturn, ruler of his 7th House. This aspect relationship is difficult. It is dominating and it ties her into his relationship insecurities.
So our scenario is this: one man with a warped perspective on women who comes from dire circumstances and is now successful meets a woman who also comes from dire circumstances and is also now successful. They have fallen in love. The problem is that he is unhappily married in a situation that is difficult to change. And with the Moon in Taurus, he isn't going to be that comfortable making such a big change in his life, especially given the circumstances surrounding everything, the family threats, etc. On the other hand, she is a beautiful, successful woman now and she wants to feel as though she is number one. This situation persisted for four years!!!! She continually rationalizes this relationship with a married man and he continually avoids the topic of divorce.
Both people have been counseled to first give full understanding and appreciation to their backgrounds. Next, she was made to understand that she cannot have grandiose expectations being in a long-lasting relationship with a married man who does not need change in his life and she knows that her sense of self-esteem in regards to relationships is what continually gets her in trouble. . He, on the other hand realized that what he is doing with this woman is actually a subtle form of disrespect. She allows it (her self-esteem issues) as long as he makes periodic appeals to her ego. She eventually woke up and finally ended the relationship. In the mean time, "he" has developed problems with alcohol and has been advised to have therapy.
I cannot begin to emphasize the importance of knowing the life circumstances in any synastric analysis that is done for the purpose of a romantic union. The horoscopes should never, ever call the shots of the decision-making. You must know the life circumstances of each person and use their horoscopes as a helpful guide. All of these techniques are outlined in, "The Practical Guide to Gauging Relationship Potentials."
"The Practical Guide to Gauging Relationship Potentials" is available on www.BasilFearrington.com. In over 20,000 words of description, this booklet provides an astrologer with important guidelines in gauging relationship potential and includes important practical tips to know in a synastric analysis.
