Dear Friends,
Why do we do so much work with the Sacred Wheel?
In all of my books, I talk about the work I have done with my teachers around the Sacred Wheel and the importance of learning how to move around this Wheel as we choreograph the energies of our lives toward balance and harmony, joy and inner peace.
Apprentices in my Mystery School do extensive Wheel work. Every year at Joshua Tree we work with the Sacred Wheel from different vantage points. As one of my apprentices puts it, "If Lynn has her way, we are going to be working around the Sacred Wheel for the rest of our lives." And yes, I think that is a very good idea!
A medicine wheel is a teaching tool and variations of this tool are found in cultures around the world. In indigenous cultures, and particularly in Native American tradition the medicine wheel has a very specific and sacred place within the life of the community as well as the life of the individual, and children are taught from a very young age how to live within the mystery and the sacredness of their special Medicine Wheel.
The wheel given to us by Agnes Whistling Elk and the Sisterhood of the Shields is not a traditional indigenous medicine wheel, nor would it be my place to teach from a Native Medicine Wheel.
The Sacred Wheel as a Paradigm
I describe our Sacred Wheel as a paradigm for the process of the mind, to help us learn to look at life from a circular perspective and see the wholeness of life. We use this Wheel as a map to our innermost being. For it is in our innermost being that enlightenment exists, that place, as Twin Dreamers says, "where the stars reside within us." And it is from our innermost being that we initiate all of our becoming, in that space between what is and what could be.
If we take a simple wheel and divide it like a compass into four directions, it looks like this: Physical manifestation resides in the south, along with trust and innocence; south is also the home of the child. Always begin your Wheel work in the south, because south represents the physical world, the world of manifestation. As you move around the Wheel sun-wise, transformation and emotions reside in the west, along with the sacred dream, death and rebirth, and the adolescent. Spirit lives in the north, home of wisdom and strength and of the adult. And mind lives in the east, the place of illumination and ancient wisdom.
How wonderful it would be to live in balance among all these major aspects of our lives!
And yet how many of us really live a life that is balanced? Most of us (all of us at some point and some people seemingly forever) spend far too much of our time caught in the east/west juggernaut of mind and emotion, going back and forth between what I think andhow I feel about what you say and do
whether or not it has anything at all to do with me! Back and forth; back and forth; back and forth indefinitely. Nothing can trigger emotional excess quite like the mind and all of the things it can conjure. And nothing quite gets the mind spinning out of control like good old emotional excess. We can keep the mind chatter and emotional fallout going until we are collapsed in exhaustion
and still it goes on.
Or we find ourselves living entirely in the south, in the world of manifestation, getting so caught up in busy work and taking care of everything and everyone around us that we forget completely and totally about our own very precious selves, about our own veryprecious lives. Until one day we find ourselves holding on to a really bad situation with every ounce of strength that we have, white knuckling our way through life. Strength and endurance reside in the north, in the place of spirit, and wonderful attributes they are. But can you see how devastating they can become if we are not balanced all the way around the Sacred Wheel, living from our center in balance and harmony in each of the four directions?
"Everyone's life is being in a trap," Agnes Whistling Elk once said to me. "But this is especially true of women. I am teaching you the ways of an escape artist, how to remove yourself from your own delusions. For a woman, there are many predators. I am teaching you more than simply how to run and hide. I am teaching you how to make your stand."
And one of the very best ways to make your stand is to bring the Sacred Wheel into your life and use it every day as you go about the business of living.
Using the Wheel to find Balance
How do we use the Sacred Wheel to find balance in our lives? The key to using the Sacred Wheel is movement, the way you move from one direction to another. Are you balanced between manifestation in the south and spirit in the north, so that the two directions are as mirrors reflecting the beauty and fulfillment of your life? At the very beginning of Star Woman, I talk about how important it is to live in trust and innocence in the south as we progress through a series of life experiences until we reach a state ofwisdom and strength in the north. Nobody ever said it is going to be an easy journey; the point is, are you working toward this end? And once you reach the point of wisdom, having grown from a life of materialism in the south to a position of spirit in the north, you are ready then to evolve further. Because once you have gone from the south to the north looking forth for spirit, you must then move from the north back to the south for substance.
It is this north/south movement that breaks us out of the traps which we have created for ourselves. But in order to move from south to north and back to south effectively, we must find balance east to west. Are you living life from your passion, moving towardfulfillment of the dreams you came into this life to create? Because if you are not, your mind is likely to absolutely chew you up and spit you out.
When something is bothering you, when you are really stuck or are having great difficulty deciding which choices to make, put the situation, or the person, on the Sacred Wheel and take a good look at it from all of the four directions. This will enable you to see just where the imbalances are. Then you will be much better able to create a road map to your innermost being, as you move from manifestation in the south to spirit in the north, from spirit in the north back to manifestation in the south with a heart that isfilled with love and gratefulness, a mind that is eager to learn, and an unbreakable connection to the Great Spirit.
What an important and amazing tool is this Sacred Wheel that has been so generously given to us! Becoming willing to use this tool, and then bringing it into our lives is one of the best gifts we can ever give ourselves. Then our journey can become truly sacred.
In spirit,
Lynn Andrews

Power Deck Cards for the Month:
This month I have chosen two cards which illustrate two ways of working with the sacred wheel. May you find them useful in your explorations!

15 -Transformation- West
The power of your intent leads your around the sacred wheel of endeavor. Begin today with trust and innocence in the early ours. Imagine a quiet pond, and see the reflection of your true self. At noon take a moment to close your eyes and dream. Image the transformation that this day offers you. Seek the strength and wisdom, through your ability to love, to bring this transformation into action and into the words you speak. At night give thanks for the illumination you have found. Know that the form of your intent leads you to the power of transformation.
The painting by Rob Schouten is entitled Transformation. The pond represents the serenity of your unconscious mind and the rebirth of awareness in the west. The steps in the north of the painting lead to a sacred place of prayer and worship of the Great Spirit. Find a sacred sanctuary within the universe of your soul. The lotus blossoms represent your transformation beginning to bloom, and the doves of peace take the messages in your heart to the Great Spirit.

20 - Harmony - West
Harmony lives in the lodge of balance and involves equilibrium between the physical and spiritual aspects of your life. For there to be harmony, there must be balance. Imagine yourself as the hub of a sacred wheel, standing in the center. This wheel must function every day of your life. If you imagine that the south is your physical self, the west your emotional self, the north your spiritual self, and the east your mental self, you see that you stand in an ancient wheel of truth. Consider whether you spend as much time in the physical (south) as you do in the spiritual (north). Are they balanced? Are they in harmony? Reflect on whether you spend more time in your emotions (west) than you do in your mind (east). Adjust your daily life by being aware of your actions and behavior patterns to incorporate equal effort in all the directions so that your wheel will function in perfect harmony.
The painting is entitled Sunrise in Eternal Places. The painting symbolizes you sitting in the sanctuary of your truth and harmony. Surrounding you are the snowy mountains of your higher consciousness. You are perfectly balanced between the planes of higher, universal consciousness and earthly consciousness, as symbolized by the globe.
Harmony is a west card, because you must always reflect to find truth, which is one of the greatest teachings of the west. You must always reflect on how balanced you are among all aspects of your nature.
