The Body Knows -
Ask a Medical Intuitive
Q & A

by Caroline Sutherland
Dear Caroline,

I am 56 years old and recently suffered from a financial setback. My ex-husband, who has been supporting me, and my two children for the past 5 years, is out of work. Suddenly I am thrust into the unknown and a state of panic. Over the years, I have suffered from constipation and lately because of the stress I have experienced bouts of rectal bleeding.
Rachel K. Portland OR

Dear Rachel,

Rectal bleeding is a serious thing. Do not hesitate - go and see your medical doctor for a consultation and probably a colonoscopy immediately! Colon problems or colorectal cancer can be detected and treated. Be proactive.

On the emotional level, the colon represents the elimination process - letting go of the past, old ideas or outmoded beliefs and the blood represents the chi or the life force; the amount of energy you have invested in yourself or others. Your belief that your husband is your only source of income is the issue a hand. On a practical level this could be the truth but on a higher level, there are other options which are yet to be seen - scary but exciting! This current experience is an important opportunity for growth and a "way in" to developing trust.
The well-known adage "What is in the way - is the way," can help you to see that your bleeding rectum and energy leakage toward the past, and fear of the future provide the catalyst to move in a new direction.

One way to help to get healing energy back into the body is to work on forgiveness - forgiveness toward your ex-husband and yourself and the choices you have both made. After all, on a higher level, "you set it up this way."
Forgiveness is not an easy task but the rewards are numerous - more energy in your own body, deeper and lighter meditations and the "space" for change to take place.

On the physical level, lets look at some of the factors which can be useful for keeping the bowels moving and the energy flowing. Increase your green leafy vegetable intake. A good-sized salad at lunch and dinner can work wonders. I like to make a "fully loaded" salad with all sorts of greens, seeds, shredded cabbage and fibrous vegetables. Add oil - olive, flax or other vegetable oils can be useful. Try 2 tablespoons a day - either "straight up" or poured on your salads. Oil coats the intestinal tract so the stool "slips" through more easily.
Add more whole grains into the diet - try some unusual grains like quinoa, millet, amaranth as well as whole rye or brown rice. Make sure your water intake is high - 8 - 12 glasses per day.

You are in the process of developing faith. Repeat the comforting affirmation "I have faith in my future." Now, start to build a future that is centered on your own gifts and talents. Find a good counselor or strategist who can help you identify your skills and steer you in a new direction. Everyone has something to offer. This may involve school or additional training. You may be eligible for state subsidized education. Keep open to all opportunities. The universe really wants to deliver good to us - we just need to believe it.

Dear Caroline,

I have been having stomach problems lately. My doctor has suggested medication for acid reflux and although it seems to be helping, I am reluctant to be on medication for something that I feel should have a simple explanation and solution. Can you help?
Janet R., San Diego, CA

Dear Janet,

The important first step that you have taken, to see your medical doctor is worth a full column. I am continually concerned that people do not consult with their physician when they have health concerns. But, your desire to investigate further, leads you into the layers behind common symptoms.

On the physical level, in my experience, the stomach will directly reflect through pain or symptoms, what you are putting in to it - your food! You do not mention your age, but around 40 - 45 years of age, hydrochloric acid production wanes. HCL is necessary for the breakdown of proteins. If you are eating starches and proteins together, the combination of these two substances can lead to gas, bloating, distension and pain.

A purist would probably recommend that you eat protein and vegetables together at a meal, and vegetables and starches together at another meal. As a medical intuitive, I see thousands of people each year and not everyone wants to be purists. We have to live in the world and I like to make things simple. The easiest way out of the problem is to take digestive enzymes with each meal. Look for one with hydrochloric acid if you are over the age of 45.

Now lets take a look at your foods. Sugar, dairy products and caffeine are the worst offenders for stomach problems - taken all together - ouch! As an experiment, avoid these items for 5 days and in most cases this will bring welcome relief.

Stomach problems on an emotional level represent an issue that may be difficult to "stomach", digest or integrate onto ones life. The stomach on a metaphysical level is the "power center" - the third chakra. When people are having digestive problems, it usually means that they are giving their power away to people, places and things outside of themselves. They can defer to people that they perceive to be more powerful, competent or more worthy than they are. Take a look at where vital energy is flowing out of your body.

Our deepest desire is to invest our energy in our creative potential, our higher purpose and our spiritual connection.

An interesting exercise is to close your eyes and imagine that your stomach is a flame - just like a flame in a furnace. Is the flame that you see, weak, smoky or even completely extinguished? Ask the "flame" to reveal to you why it is less than full power on.

Your ultimate goal is to see this "flame" as bright, clean, steady and strong, signifying that your power to digest on the physical and emotional level is intact.
