Medical Intuition- Tune in to Your Body and Improve Your Health:
Simple Body Imbalances
|
|
 |
by Caroline Sutherland |
|
|
Each body's physical system reacts differently, demonstrating its own unique capacity to respond to simple changes in dramatic or subtle ways.
I look for visual signs of imbalance and use inner vision to "see" into organs and systems. The body tells me what it wants. I visualize each person in a state of health and wellness, for I believe that this actually shifts the energy and propels them in that direction. I stay attuned to my inner voice and "knowing," and my specific background and training acts as a filter for the data I get. I receive my impressions very quickly-all of the perceptions I receive seem to "bank up" above and around my head, and I need to stay focused as I "pull" each one of them down. I'm continually scanning the body and "combing" through the information that I'm given, since this download of material is random and unsorted. After the data is disseminated, and there's no further information seemingly "hanging" in space, I know that this intense and rapid-fire process is complete. I then formulate my impressions into a practical framework, which I subsequently write down and discuss with the client.
The following case histories illustrate how medical intuitive impressions come to me on the physical, emotional, or spiritual planes, and how these individuals may have benefited from some of my suggestions. The body's capacity to regenerate is phenomenal-just the removal of some common substances can bring about dramatic changes.
Linda's Case
Several years ago, I was invited to speak at a health conference. While I was there, I consulted with Linda, who told me she had 30 benign breast cysts. She had to endure a painful procedure as each cyst was excised-which consisted of inserting a needle into the cyst to draw out the fluid. Even though her case seemed rather complicated, my impression was that she should simply stop drinking coffee and eating dairy products for a short period of time. This would take the pressure off her lymphatic system, allowing it to drain.
Linda's main imbalances were in her digestive, lymphatic, and endocrine systems. Dairy products and caffeine can often block the lymphatic system, contributing to lumps or cysts, not to mention related premenstrual syndrome (PMS) symptoms. Sometimes just the avoidance of dairy and caffeine can bring relief.
After four weeks, Linda called to say that, thankfully, she only had three cysts left, and they were shrinking. As an additional benefit, she was delighted to report that she hadn't been subjected to her usual PMS-related maladies. The body is remarkable. It knows just what to do if it's given a chance.
In my medical intuitive work, I notice that many people who consume caffeine have anger and irritation just below the surface, not to mention various physical problems. Several years ago, a study was done by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) regarding the effects of caffeine and other mood-altering substances on spiders and their web-weaving techniques. Webs constructed when the spiders were exposed to caffeine appeared as a loose, haphazard array of crooked and incomplete spokes. The spiders were unable to perform their natural functions in an organized manner while under the influence of such a stimulant.
It's the same with sensitive human beings. Imagine all of the people that you know who perform delicate and important functions in top-level professions-and who rely upon copious amounts of caffeine to stay alert. People often blame their life circumstances for the way they feel when they actually need to look closely at their stimulant intake. Not only can caffeine contribute to emotional instability, it can also increase the heart rate or elevate blood pressure.
Take Ed for instance. He was a 45-year-old man we worked with in the naturopathic clinic. Ed said he drank 15 cups of coffee a day and also had other food allergies. On that first visit, we just asked him to eliminate coffee. Six weeks later, he arrived at the clinic to tell us that he was no longer yelling at his children, his relationship with his wife was much better, and he was relating to his co-workers in a more positive manner-and all of this was because he stopped ingesting caffeine.
Special Imbalances in Children and Young Adults
Babies can often inherit their parents' allergic tendencies. Janet and her son were perfect examples of this.
Janet's Case
Janet was distraught because her infant son had recurrent respiratory and ear infections. In his short life, he'd required several courses of antibiotics. He constantly cried and rubbed his ears, and Janet frequently had to sit up with him all night just so he could breathe more easily-but she was mystified about how to alleviate his pain.
Janet was breast-feeding her baby son, and hadn't realized that this was a problem-she was passing her own allergies along to her baby.
I'd already done several consultations for this family, so I knew that Janet's husband and five-year-old son, as well as Janet herself, were highly allergic to dairy. In fact, whenever Janet drank milk or ate dairy products, she felt puffy and retained fluid. Consequently, she had difficulty maintaining normal body weight.
But nursing mothers are usually supposed to drink a good supply of milk each day-isn't milk supposed to supply calcium and other important nutrients to mothers and newborn infants? Not so in every case. This particular mother was highly milk-allergic, and so was her baby-he inherited this allergy genetically, and it was also transmitted through Janet's breast milk.
Since the child had been on so many courses of antibiotics, which can disturb the delicate balance of intestinal flora, I started by suggesting that a bowel bacteria culture might be useful in returning this area to normal. My main piece of advice, however, was to eliminate milk from both Janet's diet and that of her son. Immediately after Janet stopped drinking milk, her son could breathe more easily, and after a few days, his ears were less inflamed. "It happened so fast, it was like a miracle," Janet told me.
Robert's Case
Nine-year-old Robert and his distraught mother came to me for a consultation. Robert had been diagnosed with mild autism-autistic children can often appear absent, incommunicative, and engage in repeated behavior patterns. The mother was beside herself trying to control this boy who couldn't be left alone for a moment without a resulting calamity. When I looked at Robert, I could see that he was "in there"-that is, within himself, he was "home," or present and aware of his surroundings. He didn't appear to have the usual signs of autism. I preferred to see him intuitively as a small boy with behavior problems, food allergies, and chemical imbalances. Because the only way Robert's mother could handle her son was to give him whatever he wanted, he ate and drank anything he pleased.
I suggested to the mother that she implement a ten-day "clear" program, so the foods and beverages Robert was allergic to, and to which he was constantly exposed, wouldn't be consumed.
After ten days, the mother contacted me to say that this was the first time she'd had any peace in since Robert was born. His mood swings were predictable and less severe, and he was calmer and happier with himself and his surroundings. Even his teachers commented on the change in him. Over time, his mother became acutely aware of dramatic shifts in his behavior when he consumed dairy products, preservatives, food dyes, or sugars-and that exposure just wasn't worth the price of family disruption. At last report, Robert continues to progress.
Greg's Case
Greg, a teenager, was pale and lethargic. Using my intuitive eyes, I looked into his intestinal tract and could see that it was angry and irritated. It turned out that he'd been battling an inflammatory condition of the bowels-consequently, he'd been suffering from cramps and diarrhea and weighed less than 80 pounds. At the same time, he had a history of antibiotic treatment due to repeated respiratory infections. Greg was also plagued with recurring bladder infections. Bladder and yeast infections are related symptoms of chronic candidiasis. This boy was consuming vast amounts of sugar, soda pop, and fruit juice, and as I've said, candida thrives on sugars in any form.
We set about to reduce his sugar consumption, and I suggested some foods that might be less irritating to his colon. He'd been everywhere to find relief, but I felt that it was important for him to see a holistic physician and begin treatment for candidiasis. Within three weeks, Greg's cramps and diarrhea had stopped, and he was feeling stronger and more energetic than ever. A month later, he'd gained five pounds, and was doing better than he had in a very long time.
Arthritis and Joint Disorders
Afflictions of the joints, including arthritis, are almost accepted as inevitable signs of aging. This doesn't have to be so, as the following cases will illustrate.
Ruby's Case
Ruby came to me with a history of rheumatoid arthritis attacks. This painful disease involves the body's immune system, which actually attacks itself. Many times, Ruby's symptoms were so severe that she had to be hospitalized, and she was treated with strong drugs to keep her condition at bay. After a ten-year remission, her symptoms flared up again, and this is when I saw her. Ruby was pale and exhausted, and her pain was so severe that she was unable to walk, which was extremely stressful for her, considering that she made her living as a waitress. Several vials of fluid were surgically removed from her knees due to pressure buildup. She was one of The Tricky People, but I tried to help her anyway.
Looking at Ruby, I could tell that she was allergic to grains. Glutinous grains can often contribute to joint pain, both mild and severe. Onions and garlic were also factors, as these frequently consumed foods can contribute to digestive problems and immune reactions in some people. In addition, Ruby appeared sensitive to the nightshade food family (see Food Family list on page____), which is comprised of potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant, tobacco, and peppers in any form. The nightshade family may be linked to arthritis, although this sensitivity rarely showed up in my work as an allergy tester. And last, I detected that unmistakable yeasty smell wafting through the room-it seemed as if candida yeast was at it again.
I suggested that Ruby eliminate grains and foods in the nightshade family, and work to eliminate candida. Within three days of following her plan, her agony was noticeably diminished. After a week, the pain and swelling had almost disappeared completely. Two weeks later, she was back at work and no longer suffering. Ruby continued on a candida-eradication program for several months, and was careful to monitor her offending foods, keeping exposure to a minimum.
In reviewing this case, I found that the core element in Ruby's condition was the dissatisfaction she felt as a waitress. She'd been disregarding her creative abilities and putting stress on her body and immune system with such demanding physical work. Examining why she was waiting tables instead of waiting on herself and bringing forth the gifts that she had to offer the world assisted her in addressing the emotional nature of her illness. Once Ruby confronted these issues and followed the right food plan, she ultimately was able to heal.
Dennis's Case
Dennis came to me with severe joint pain. He loved to go ballroom dancing but had given it up due to his condition. No amount of supplements or pain relievers seemed to be working. I tuned in and quickly discerned that the elimination of wheat would help him. He consumed vast amounts of pasta, which is made from wheat flour. When people are sensitive to wheat and other glutinous grains, they can often have joint problems due to an immune reaction and resulting inflammation. I also suggested that he take sugar-a major culprit-out of his diet for the same 30-day trial period.
After a month, Dennis reported back to me to say that he was back to ballroom dancing and was even doing deep knee bends. He was free of pain, and his body was responding to the new regime of meals with rice or potatoes, instead of pasta.
In reviewing this case, I found out that Dennis had suffered profound losses in his life, which had affected his body, particularly his immune system. The immune system can become compromised and reactive when people suffer from emotional upheavals. Dennis had been divorced three times-at great emotional and financial expense-thus putting additional strain on his organs and joints. As I've previously mentioned, knees, on an emotional level, can relate to money, flexibility, and surrendering to the higher will or to the greater picture. Once Dennis acknowledged his emotional obstacles, and also followed the proper food plan, he was well on the road to recovery.
In the next chapter, I'll show you how a particular lifestyle choice can affect the subtle balance of physical well-being, and how medical intuition can assist in unraveling some obvious physical symptoms that go hand-in-hand with this way of life.
