Thanksgiving of the Soul:
Or How Being Grateful
Makes the World Go Round!

by Dr. Gwen MacGregor
Just as much courage is needed to endure prosperity as adversity. During the spells of well-being we are easily led into committing a grave error, by living and acting only on ‘personal levels,’ relaxing our watchfulness and discipline, neglecting to keep in continuous touch with the Inner God. We delude ourselves into thinking we personally are strong, free, self-controlled; we dissipate in a vain and sometimes degrading way, for selfish purposes, the precious energies showered upon us by the Higher Self.

Then necessarily He must manifest to us, often unrecognized, under the form of pain, of adversity, of inner darkness, shaking us, awakening us, obliging us to appeal to Him, training us to become worthy trustees of our Father’s gifts and powers."

"Notes on the Inner Life" by Roberto Assagiolo

As we approach the season of the "inner life" and its contemplation, it is good to remind ourselves of the many gifts we have received in our divine perfection. This season of Thanksgiving, with all its potencies of expansion, love and lessons learned provides a perfect backdrop for remembering that which is important in our body/souls’ development while we walk the Earth. At this time, we see the outer light begin to dim as the seasons bring forth more shade, and darkness comes earlier to the mind and heart. What a perfect time to contemplate our personal world and reflect outwardly the joy of giving, of thankfulness and of the many gifts received.

Many Americans celebrate Thanksgiving as a feast day where family and friends gather to remember all that truly matters in this life. It is not just a day of football and feasting for many light-bearers on a difficult path of ascension at present. They know it is easy to be grateful when times are pleasant and life hums along without obstruction. However, the new call to duty which many light seekers have addressed in their own psychic development and awareness of late, demands a different kind of thankfulness at such public times of joy. Carrying the light of forgiveness, gratefulness for God’s gifts and the awareness of so much work to be done is not an easy task for these "outsiders" amongst us. To carry the torch of Illumination is a great gift and one they must ever be grateful for but, they also carry the privilege of knowing how to bring God‘s love back to humanity through every kind of hardship and life lesson we can imagine. As do the great angels on high, they also carry forth the lessons for humanity on their shoulders. For they know, as they give back or reflect to humanity the many faces of the Godhead, they will perpetuate the flow of God’s gifts forever.

In channeled readings I am often asked to explain why certain painful lessons befall an individual. Many of my clients are Light-Bearers who suffer much mental and emotional pain as they arduously work their way up from the bottom of each task to the light of day. It is an unspoken understanding that as they learn the spiritual lessons at hand, they become what the world around them needs to see and experience. They become way-showers or the role models your parents always hoped to be and what you hope to aspire too, today. One of my teachers told me a long time ago that the astral lessons on earth can be likened to a room full of 100 chessboards being quickly played out by yourself so that your deductive reasoning and desire to love will grow as one until you ascend to the next floor, the next 100 chessboards and the next harder lessons from God. The lessons of God remain consistent, can be seen as great gifts when you keep up your momentum and growth level or can drain you physically, mentally and present nothing but hardship for you. Activity, both spiritual and mental, is the Nature of God. Somehow along the Path, light-bearers have figured this out. That along with the greatest gifts comes heightened activity, greater friendships and therefore memories to celebrate. There is also an enhanced abundance in all things love-related and therefore, more reason to be thankful in this season of spiritual hibernation and the recognition of the Creator as the consummate gift-giver. This knowing is a great wisdom held by the privileged few who know at this time the circle of receiving must now turn to giving.

In other words, in order for our world to find a more constant flow of abundance, greater fellowship, good will and development of inner bonds between diverse populations, we must celebrate the great gifts that we have become and share the wealth that is promised to all. Alice Bailey and her beloved, DK, spoke often of a place called Shamballa. It is a combination of Eden, Shangri La, spiritual Nirvana and a place of balance within the earthly form. That peace within they spoke of is a place of thanksgiving. It is a place of satiation where all the gifts are being utilized perfectly, in a moderate fashion and the way-showers are able to be as great Lights of hope and peace. For the Buddhists it would be a place where all desire has been quenched and we are able to soothe the nerve endings of our everyday stresses. And of course, it is also that place of thanksgiving within all of us.

It is our privilege to be a co-Creator with God. It is our greatest gift to be blessed by being able to make friends and loved ones out of the more than 6 billion people and countless animals walking the Earth today. Your power to expand God’s Love and Purpose has never been so great or so very apparent. The celebration of Thanksgiving must expand to the world. As we feed neighbor families and serve in soup kitchens during this holiday, our nation also has the ability to set up camps of safety in the Sudan and other ‘hotspots’ so needful of our light of freedom, food and love. Do what you can this holiday to expand God’s Great Plan as you celebrate with Him in the midst of the world of light and love you have created for yourself. Be the source of thankfulness for your family, community and nation. Hold the vision of Shamballa close always to your heart and send that vision out liberally in your thoughts so that it may catch fire over the Earth. Be the gift. Be the gift from God we give thanks for and most of all, share the wealth. Remember…you can’t take it with you!

Blessed Thanksgiving to you all,

Dr. Gwen MacGregor
