Dear Friends,
Fall is a time of celebration and coming together, traditionally a time to celebrate Earth's bounty as we harvest summer's crops and put food by for the coming winter. It is a time of abundance, a time of community, a time of work, and a time for finding and manifesting harmony in the great cycle of life.
On a spiritual plane, it is a time for taking stock of our lives, where we have been and where we are today as we begin preparations for our time of hibernation and introspection with Great Dreaming Bear.
It is a time to ask, 'Am I living a life of harmony? Am I being faithful to my own truth?'
It is the time to set things right.
In my work with Grandmother (The Woman of Wyrrd), I was introduced to an ancient oracle, magnificent cards of wisdom which had been used by European shamans and magicians throughout history to empower their apprentices with higher consciousness in order to
divine their own truth and power. For behind all of the chaos of our lives, a chaos that seems to have been the human condition for as long as words have had memory, there has always existed one simple truth:
No one can give you true power. You must take your own power.
"The truth is within your own heart and your own soul," [Grandmother] said gently. "When you become lonely and you become afraid, my sister, all the answers you will ever need will be found within yourself. Do not look so frantically out into the world for the answers to your questions. Look within, and ask yourself, 'Am I being faithful to my own truth?' Losing that faith is the onlyreal sin against the goddess mother. We forget who we are in this world of illusion. And it is the one thing that we must forgive and cure. The Old One will survive in all of her women."
Grandmother, The Woman of Wyrrd
Grandmother called these cards simply the Power Deck. "They are a way of finding the source of truth within oneself," she said to me. They impart an earth-based wisdom that is intended to inspire and support the power that resides within us, drawing us back into harmony within ourselves so that we can then manifest that harmony out into the world.
In creating power deck cards that we can use today, The Power Deck, Cards of Wisdom, the Sisterhood of the Shields and I worked diligently to make these cards as close to Grandmother's ancient cards as possible, yet keep them truly applicable to 20th (and now 21st!) century life. They are designed to help us find the truth that is within our own hearts and within our own souls, for it is only by finding that truth that we can have true power.
During the harvest time of the year in our lives, we need to come together in search of our own inner truth as we strive for greater harmony within ourselves, harmony among us all, harmony with the Great Mother who gives us all that we are. I am going to begin this work by casting a Sacred Self Wheel. a sacred wheel for harmony and abundance. I will ask the Oracle of The Power Deck to show us what energy we need to use, what we can do individually in our own lives and together in community to move us into the source of truth and of power within us, into the place of harmony.
I am going to draw a card from The Power Deck and place it on our Sacred Self Wheel. As each card is drawn, I will ask you to sit with it, pray with it, meditate on it and find the special significance that each card holds for you in your life and as you move within your community. I will extend this process over into my December column. At the end of that time, we will have a complete sacred wheel for an abundance of harmony as our guide.
I invite you please to continue your individual work with the Power Deck during this time; the two processes can only compliment one another! In working with the Power Deck, it is important for your cards to have an altar, for it takes only a fleeting moment of seeing something beautiful to bring us back to our central truth. These cards are intended to be used as a ceremony, as a sacred ceremony, for when we forget ceremony, we forget who we are. To remember who we are is to remember the sacredness that is the source for all life. Nothing can be more central to the work we are doing together.
In working with The Power Deck, Cards of Wisdom, it is also important to remember that the cards are like the Tree of Life, designed to teach us about mediations between the life forces of the land and all other forms of life. They teach us that we are all one. It is in this oneness that we protect the powers of the land, and shamans and magicians have used the power deck throughout the ages to give to nature, to replenish the power it gives us. This life force is energy and becomes light and, finally, eternal love.
As Grandmother taught me, "There are magical keys in the power deck. These keys unlock the gateways to the mysteries of truth. Each time we study and use the power deck, we create light like sparks from a fire. These sparks revitalize the life force that has been given to us by the land so that we may live. If you ask about sacred study, I must tell you that the source of all power is hidden in our mother, the land. To live, we must partake of our mother's body. To engage in sacred study completes the circle. Studying or using the cards of wisdom, learning more of truth, gives off light. The beings of the earth live in a give and take, a flow of light that becomes life force and then becomes love. It is law."
Traditionally on a Sacred Self Wheel, the four directions represent different aspects of one's self or one's growth in the process of enlightenment. In working with a community wheel such as we are, the four directions will still represent these aspects. When you meditate with the cards I draw, look at each one from a very personal perspective to find the messages contained therein which are especially for you; then look at the card again from the perspective of where it fits in relation to your community and how you move in the world.
We begin by drawing a card for the South and will continue around the Sacred Wheel in a sunwise direction, moving to the West, North and East. These four cards will give us an opportunity to learn about ourselves and our relationship with each direction of our special wheel of harmony and abundance. Then we will learn about balancing and mediating the powers of the four directions of our wheel by drawing a the Self Card; finally, the Task Card will show us what is missing on our path to the power of this Wheel of Harmony and Abundance, what aspect of power we most need to work on.
CASTING THE SACRED SELF WHEEL OF HARMONY AND ABUNDANCE:
Card for the South of the Wheel of Harmony -

Creativity: Your creativity is like a story; it needs a voice, a way to be heard in the world. Creativity has moved into your hut. Creativity is part of your future life. People think that creativity is like stories, that it is outside of them, like truth or power. But it inhabits you like your own life force, and it animates your being. Creativity is within the crystal palace of your mind. You are about to go on a long journey. It is called your life. You will learn to heal the evil forces of darkness. You are a warrior in the fight against ignorance. The dark sorcerers in life are created within each of us when we live a life of unexpressed creativity, when we live someone else's truth and not our own. Define your own creativity and live that creativity in the world.
Reflecting on the South Position of our Wheel -
The South represents trust and innocence on the Sacred Wheel. It is the place of the inner child, the position of your physical being, the place of manifestation. What is the relationship between creativity and trust and innocence in your life? What role does creativity play in your relationship with your physical body? In your accomplishments and how you manifest your truth in the world?
Remember what the Card says, "People think that creativity is like stories, that it is outside of them, like truth or power. But it inhabits you like your own life force, and it animates your being. Creativity is within the crystal palace of your mind." Every time you juggle the schedules of your children so that everyone can get to different places at the same time, or come up with the funds to cover an unexpected expense you are using your creativity. Any time someone cuts in line in front of you and you respond with something other than anger and one-upmanship, you are probably exercising your creativity; you are not letting the inappropriate acts of another define you."
Most of us at one time or another have given away our power, given away our truth. We sell out our dreams of what we want to accomplish in life by taking a job that pays the bills. We sell out our bodies by becoming so busy that we let our bodies go. In both cases, we become much less than we know we could be. The Power Deck helps us go to the source of this dis-ease. It helps us find the primal source of our pain or limitation, so that it can be healed.
Creativity lives in the East on the Sacred Wheel, place of illumination, home of the mind. It is a teaching of the east because it takes strength to delve into the deepest part of your spirit and then to manifest into the physical the truth that you find there. In order to bring creativity into your life, you need to allow for openness of mind, create in your body an open conduit for your physical energy.
Creativity is the manifestation of a higher state of consciousness. What is the Harmony Wheel now telling you about the role creativity could play in your life?
Spend some time in prayer and meditation on how you can use creativity to help you move into harmony in your life, on how creativity can bring you to the source of truth and power within you.
Card for the West on the Wheel of Harmony:

Impeccability: Move into that place of perfection within you, that place of truth, responsibility, competence, and intuition. Collect your discipline, like a Buddha meditating in a garden of snow. Impeccability is an area of strength that continues to flame within, maintaining your power and intent. This flame burns in your center always, indicating the level of your capabilities and your effectiveness in bringing events into being. Impeccability is tended by the attentions of your sacred witness - that person within you who observes the target. Gather your power with impeccability. With the intensity of a rubber band pulled and held at its breaking point, gather your intent and focus on your impeccability for the job about to be done.
Reflecting on the West Position of Our Wheel:
The west symbolizes the sacred dream, death, rebirth, and transformation. It is the place within you where your adolescent self lives. It is the place where your emotions live.
As you sit in the west on our Harmony Wheel, think about your transformation from one experience to another over the course of your life, how you felt about each event at the time and where your feelings took you. So often we live lives that are out of balance, where an excess of emotion rules our every waking moment, our every action, especially negative emotion, which has the power to destroy entire nations.
Now take another look at these transformations through the eyes of impeccability, from the place of truth, responsibility, competence and intuition within you. What might you have said or done differently if your emotions had been balanced by your impeccability? Certainly we cannot change the past, that is not our intent in doing this exercise. But you can use the insightsthat come to you now as you sit in reflection with impeccability to heal your unhealed wounds.
So many of us experienced trauma in one form or another during our adolescence. And because we are a society without traditional rites of passage that are keyed to moving us through life experiences, much of that trauma went unresolved. Go back into your adolescence and walk that young teenager back through those awful moments using the strength of impeccability that flames within you now, and help the adolescent you to change the images on the screen to a deeper understanding, to a better outcome.
As you do these things, you begin to change your entire relationship with power.
Impeccability implies male action in the world, but before there can be movement outward as an explosion into the world, there has to be the impeccable feminine receptivity and stillness withinone's being. Then there is true power and intuition within the warrior.
Impeccability is a north card, because hibernation and winter imply a time of gathering and going within, a time of letting go of what you do not need. Use the beautiful wisdom and spirit ofimpeccability in the north to heal any unhealed emotions and life experiences as in the west. Then you can be unhampered as an impeccable warrior of spirit.
In love and spirit,
Lynn Andrews
