Astrology Notes: Astrology, Healing and the Evolution of Consciousness

The Moon
(Part 2 of 2)
Protective Mother
(Part 1)
& Pendulum of the Soul
(Part 2)

by Martin Lass
In the last installment (see archives), we explored the Moon's role in creating and maintaining our protective patterns and mechanisms-how these keep us safe and regulate the pace of our evolution of consciousness on the one hand, and how they later hold us back from this same evolution unless we work consciously to transform them into higher-octave energy.

In this installment, we will explore the Moon's other, more encompassing role: as a kind of cosmic arrow that points the direction of our lives and sets the themes and challenges for each earthly incarnation.

We have compared the Moon's role in the solar system to the action of a pendulum in a grandfather clock: it regulates the pace of evolution and keeps the clock running by virtue of the force of gravity. In simple terms, we must be 'earthed' in order to function in our daily lives, and the Moon helps us in this.

The Moon's orbit traces a path that alternately moves above and below the Earth's ecliptic. To envisage this, imagine a plate cutting through the Earth's equator and extending outward to the orbit of the Moon. The Moon's orbit is tipped slightly from this plate, alternately orbiting above and below the plate. The points where the orbit is exactly in line with the plate-moving from below the plate to above and from above to below-are nodal points. There are two such nodal points, exactly opposing each other. These are called "the Moon's Nodes."

Of the Moon's Nodes, there is the North Node, where the Moon is moving from below the ecliptic to above, and the South Node, where the Moon is moving from above the ecliptic to below.

At the moment of our birth, if we were to draw an imaginary line from the South Node to the North Node and put an arrowhead at the North end, we would have a representation of the direction of our lives in our present incarnation. The zodiac sign and house at the South Node represents where we have come from (in previous incarnations), what our lessons and challenges are, what unfinished business we have, and what gifts and talents we bring with us into this current lifetime. The zodiac sign and house at the North Node represents where we are going-our destiny-the potential outcome of our lessons and challenges if we attend to these, the resultant expression and service of our lives, and the highest potential for our evolution of consciousness in this lifetime. In short, the North Node points us toward our "divine design."

Everything else in a person's birth horoscope revolves around the Moon's Nodes. To understand how this could be so, we must necessarily look at the bigger cosmic picture. Although this goes beyond the scope of this short article, we can begin to glimpse this larger cosmic picture by understanding that the Moon, like all planetary satellites, is evolving toward planetary status, the planets themselves are evolving toward Sun status, and all suns are evolving back toward the galactic core. As parts of the consciousness of the Earth-a planet striving for Sun consciousness-each of us must 'work through' and transcend our most unevolved issues that are mirrored in the less evolved consciousness of the Moon in order to eventually attain Sun consciousness.

Let's take a short trip around the zodiac and see what the Moon's Nodes mean in each of the zodiac signs.

(Note: you can find out what your Moon's Nodes are for free at http://www.astro.com/horoscopes/ahor.asp. Go to "Chart Drawings" and enter your birth details. The sign positions of the Nodes will be displayed on the left in the chart box. The North Node symbol is like an upside-down "U" with little circles on the ends: <. The South Node symbol is like a right-side-up "U" with little circles on the ends: > .)

(Also note that the following interpretations of the Moon's Nodes are an adjunct to the broader descriptions of the zodiac pairs discussed in the previous article, "The Zodiac as a Mandala of Love." See archives.)

South Node in Aries / North Node in Libra

You come from previous lifetimes where "self" was emphasized, where it was important that you develop a strong, independent, self-motivated nature, but where you did not necessarily consider others. Neither did you tend to consider the consequences of your actions, but tended to jump into things without thinking or foresight. It was all about "you." In a universe where selfishness and selflessness have equally important and valid places, in these previous lifetimes, your soul's pendulum swung toward the selfishness pole.

The gifts and experience you bring into this lifetime include solidity of self, focus of personal consciousness, ability to be self-motivated, and the ability to initiate new projects and new paths.

In this lifetime, your task/lesson/challenge is to acknowledge once again the place of others in your life and in the smooth running of all social interactions around you. No person is an island. We each need each other at times. Your personal/individual gifts and talents mean little unless others can also benefit from them. Otherwise, it would be a very lonely world indeed.

Your challenge is to learn to live harmoniously and successfully with others. The highest expression of this can be seen through close personal relationships (particularly through marriages, whether legal or de facto), partnerships of all kinds, and through the institutions of social justice and equality.

As you strive for these ideals, your gift to others will be your solidity and straightforwardness of character, your focused nature, your motivation, your initiative, and your sense of self-an example others will aspire to.

On the other side, your gift to others will also be the living demonstration of the blessed coexistence of individuality/self and collectivity/others. Put simply, you will demonstrate that one does not need to lose or sacrifice a sense of self or fall into co-dependency to have a successful, sharing, loving relationship with another (or others). In fact, a truly successful and fulfilling relationship must be predicated upon the sacredness of the individuality of each partner. In short, although our individual paths may vary, we honor and celebrate this, walking side by side down the path of life and supporting each others' different focus/direction without treading in each others' space. A partnership represents complementary pieces of the jigsaw of life, each individual, but each incomplete without the other.

South Node in Taurus / North Node in Scorpio

You come from previous lifetimes where material and emotional solidity, security, stability, and abundance were your primary issues and focus. You built powerful and solid means for maintaining these things, demonstrating the important lesson of learning how to master and maintain physical (and emotional) well-being for yourself and others.

However, in the process, your soul's pendulum swung toward the materiality pole, and the spiritual/intangible longing of the soul were perhaps forgotten and/or neglected. You mistook physical reality for the greater, intangible reality that lies within your heart. Moreover, you became increasingly fixed in your viewpoints and opinions, unwilling to budge in the face of different perspectives. You tended to close down the doors of your perception, focusing only upon what would immediately satisfy your needs and/or give you safety, security, and comfort.

The gifts and experience you bring into this lifetime include the ability to manage, to plan, to set long-term goals and carry them out, faithfulness, reliability, perseverance, and the appreciation of beauty and art in all forms.

In this lifetime, your task/lesson/challenge is to wrest your inner eye from its fixation with the materially tangible world around you-to realize that our physical reality is but a pale reflection of the greater reality and truth of spirit. Your task/lesson is to find once again the stability, safety, security, abundance (that you now seek in the outer physical world in yourself) in your heart of hearts. It is to realize that the greatest security and abundance is to be found in love. Once found, this all-encompassing love can carry us through any material adversity, any emotional crisis, anything that challenges our earthly idea of safety.

Your task/lesson is also to see beyond the illusions of loss and death-to see how loss begets gains in different forms, and how death is always accompanied by new birth in different forms. In the final analysis, loss and gain, death and birth are but the two sides of the world coming into tangibility and returning once again to spirit. You task/lesson/challenge is once again to discover, acknowledge, and embrace intangible spirit.

As you strive for these ideals, your gift to others will be your mastery of the physical realm and your ability to help others in this mastery. It will be your practicality, your steadfast nature, and, most importantly, your ability to find solace, safety, security, abundance, beauty, and balance within your heart, helping others to also find this inner place-the place of love. It will be your ability to help others return to a trust in love and spirit.

South Node in Gemini / North Node in Sagittarius

You come from previous lifetimes where you followed your quest for knowledge to its extreme limits. In the process, though, you tended to seek this knowledge in the outside world-through others and their knowledge and experience-and to trust this above the wordless inner knowledge that resides in your heart of hearts. In short, as the pendulum of your soul swung toward the knowledge/personality pole (as opposed to the wisdom/being pole), you began to doubt your own inner truth and understanding, increasingly relying upon others for guidance and for understanding of the bigger questions of life. Consequently, you also tended to become increasingly fickle, unreliable, chameleonesque, flighty, flippant, turncoat, and shallow. Meanwhile, something in your heart of hearts languished, longing for you once again to trust your inner knowing.

The gifts and experience you bring into this lifetime include the ability to bring together many different viewpoints, many different facets of the gem of life, many different disciplines and areas of study. You are a connecter of people, places, and things. You also have the innate capacity to bring lightness, fun, and frivolity to the lives of others, showing others how to take a break sometimes from obsessing with more serious and weighty matters.

In this lifetime, your task/lesson/challenge is to integrate the masses of information, knowledge, and viewpoints you tend to gather into a larger picture-into a more coherent framework. As you do so, something in your heart of hearts-in your soul-will begin to ring. You will gradually realize that you knew it all already. Your task/lesson/challenge is to once again trust your inner voice, trust your inner knowing, trust your heart of hearts.

Your task/lesson/challenge is also to wrest your attention away from its fixation with the "answers" provided by others, by religious/spiritual/political/social/philosophical/
educational institutions-to become more of a 'gnostic,' i.e. one who is 'informed' about the deeper meaning of life by one's own heart… a direct contact with the 'god' within. It is also to focus more on the larger picture and meaning of life, of which the smaller details-opinions, viewpoints, perspectives, stances, beliefs, and so on-are but parts. In short, you seek values and beliefs that are more eternal (spiritual) and less transient (material).

As you strive for these ideals, your gift to others will be the ability to show how the multitude of viewpoints, opinions, beliefs, perspectives, and so on of different people, races, cultures, and social sub-group are all connected and are all essentially saying the same thing. Moreover, it will be the ability to demonstrate-by your personal example and through direct sharing-that it is all within each of us already, in our heart of hearts. You are destined to become a teacher of wisdom, whatever form this may take, directly or by example.

South Node in Cancer / North Node in Capricorn

You come from previous lifetimes where you were given everything in terms caring, nurturing, love, emotional security, and support. You learned how to accept the care of others, to allow yourself to be wrapped up in the bosom of others, and to rely upon others to look after you. However, as the pendulum of your soul swung towards this pole, you increasingly abdicated responsibility for your own life to the care of others. You become dependent-particularly emotionally-upon the care of others, and, if such care was not forthcoming or deemed sufficient, you tended to fall into blame, resentment, and feelings of neglect, abandonment, and/or lovelessness.

The gifts and experience you bring into this lifetime include giving others the opportunity to develop and express their own caring, nurturing, mothering, and supportive sides. You also have the capacity to give others joy, love, a sense of purpose, a sense of belonging, and a sense of being needed and valued in the world.

In this lifetime, your task/lesson/challenge is to learn once again how to take full responsibility for your life-physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. Having been given everything in your upbringing, it is now time to 'leave home', so to speak, and become self-sufficient and self-motivated. Part of this challenge of this may be to recognize how and in what ways you were in fact "given everything" in your upbringing, because there may be the feeling that these things were lacking, that you were neglected, and/or that you were not cared for 'properly.'

Your task/lesson/challenge is not only to once again take responsibility for your own life, but very often may be to learn how to look after, organize, manage, care for, and take responsibility for others as well. This can feel like an incredible burden at first, but is part of the 'payback' required by the balancing forces of the universe in return for all that you have been given in previous lives and in your early life this lifetime. Again, part of the challenge will be recognizing, acknowledging, and finally embracing the unrecognized 'forms' in which you were, in fact, given everything, because your first feeling may disagree with this notion. As you do recognized and embrace these forms in your own life, you will increasingly find joy and fulfillment in looking after others where and when required.

In the final analysis, your task/lesson/challenge will be to recreate for others the structures and forms of care, support, nurturance, responsibility, organization, and management that provided you with the complete and blessed 'upbringing' that you have had-in previous lives as well as in your early life this lifetime.

As you strive for these ideals, your gift to others will first be the example you set in taking steps to look after yourself, take responsibility for yourself and your life, and care for yourself on all fronts. Second, it will be the care, nurturing, support, responsibility, organization, management, and so forth that you will be able (and ultimately willing!) to share with, and provide for, others in need. Ultimately, your greatest gift will also be to assist others in taking their first steps towards personal responsibility for their own lives.

South Node in Leo / North Node in Aquarius

You come from previous lifetimes where you learned how to celebrate your creativity, self-expression, self, and leadership qualities. In short, you learned how to shine, personally and individually. However, as the pendulum of the soul swung toward the individual/ego pole (as opposed to the collective/egoless pole), in your mind's eye, you gradually became the imaginary center of your world, others becoming but the imaginary satellites of your regal existence. You forgot that, without others to reflect your light, your light would simply be lost in the darkness. You forgot how others helped you shine and how others provided you with the means to fulfill your creative efforts, your self-expression, and your leadership capabilities. In short, you became enamored of your own image.

The gifts and experience you bring into this lifetime include the capacity to bring light into others' lives, to be a shining example to which other aspire, to lead others, to inspire others, and to bring inspiration, hope, and romance to others' lives. Through your example, others may develop the courage to be, celebrate, and shine who they are.

In this lifetime, your task/lesson/challenge is to wrest your inner eye from its fixation upon your own magnificence-to once again develop the humility and gratitude that comes from the realization, acknowledgment, embracing, and loving of others' places in, and contributions to, your life. The collective effort is comprised of individuals, all mutually shining their unique gifts and talents, but each reflecting and enhancing each other. Yes, we each are a shining spark of the divine light, but a single star in a vacuum means little or nothing. Look around you and see that you are a star amongst a myriad of stars, exactly like the star clouds of the Milky Way and that, collectively, there is even greater beauty, balance, truth, and love in this. Your task/lesson/challenge is to focus on the future of the world and humanity and ask yourself what will be your part in this future. Where do you fit in the bigger picture?

In practical terms, your task/lesson/challenge begins by realizing, acknowledging, embracing, loving, and giving thanks for others' part in your life-for others' part in making you who you are today. Without these others, you would still be a seed-a star in embryo.

As you strive for these ideals, your gift to others will be helping others to learn how to shine their own individual gifts and talents, without fear or guilt. It will further be to enhance all and any collective efforts with your own gifts and talents, all the while recognizing and acknowledge the place of all others in this effort. It will be to honor and celebrate the larger Plan, of which we are all an integral, valuable, and unique part. It will be to show others how they can enhance, help, improve, heal, and evolve the world by beginning to honor themselves and their part in the greater cosmos.

South Node in Virgo / North Node in Pisces

You come from previous lifetimes where you strived to 'get it right', to attend to all the details, to 'improve', 'correct', 'set right', 'fix', and/or organize the world around you. You were concerned with the 'right way' of doing things, and with the collective 'good' of all ways of doing things. However, as the pendulum of your soul swung toward the details/discernment/analytic/pragmatic pole (as opposed to the overview/acceptance/intuitive/idealistic pole), you tended to become hypercritical, obsessed with the details, jaded, faithless, cynical, dissatisfied with the way things were, disjointed and scattered in your consciousness, and disconnected from the larger, more intuitive appreciation of the intangible life/gift of spirit. In short, you lost touch with your divine nature.

The gifts and experience you bring into this lifetime include the ability to sift through the details of life and to see patterns therein, to organize and improve upon existing methods of doing things, and to hone in on exactly where certain tweaks and corrections will improve the quality and integrity of others' lives. You have the capacity to bring others down to earth, dissolving their fantasies, muddled thinking, and sloppy ways of letting things ride. You tend to have a dry sense of humor that others find refreshing and down to earth. You are genuinely concerned with the welfare of others and with improving life wherever you can. You tend to be the force behind the scenes, never needed or wishing to stand out, but knowing innately your value in any situation.

In this lifetime, your task/lesson/challenge is to wrest your inner eye from its fixation upon the close-up details of things and people. It is to begin to put together the scattered pieces of life-pieces you have been gathering over so many lifetimes, like collections of insects, coins, or stamps-into a larger picture that integrates and then transcends ordinary, everyday life. It is to realize, acknowledge, embrace, and finally love the fact that all ways of doing things have their merit, their place, and their value within the larger scheme of the evolution of consciousness. It is to realize that your way is not the only way. It is to acknowledge that each of people's 'mistakes', 'inaccuracies', 'sloppy' habits, 'indiscretions', 'errors' of judgment, and so forth represents a valid and valuable path of learning, evolution, healing, and real-life experience. From this perspective, there are no mistakes, no accidents, and no wrong paths.

In addition, your task/lesson/challenge is to reconnect with your divine center-to wrest yourself from your fixation upon the tangible, pragmatic, down-to-earth world around you and to realize that there is a hidden order, a hidden wholeness, behind all things visible. It is to trust once again your intuition-to take a chance on trusting your heart rather than your mind. It is to look for ways and means of quantum leaping your understanding beyond your otherwise pragmatic, cynical, critical, and earthbound nature. We must go 'outside' ourselves in order to see a bigger picture. From here, we can then return to our more pragmatic and practical side and try to discern and understand how the bigger picture works.

Ultimately, your task/lesson/challenge is to realize, acknowledge, embrace, and finally love the fact that, in truth, nothing needs fixing, changing, correcting, or getting rid of. All things are perfect as they are.

As you strive for these ideals, your gift to others will be your ability to show others how what they know, feel, and believe in their heart of hearts works-the details and workings of the divine world manifest on earth. It will be the capacity to direct others' attention to new ways of seeing things. Now knowing innately (and honoring this knowing) that nothing in the earthly world actually needs fixing, changing, correcting, or getting rid of, your efforts will be not in 'adjusting' things in the outside world, but rather in 'adjusting', 'tweaking', and/or 'correcting' the way others see the world and their own lives. You will have the ability to point out the perfection that is innate in our lives and in the world at large. In this way, wittingly or unwittingly, you will be reconnecting people to their divine origins.
