Fall Cleanse

The Amazing Amla

by Venkat and Christine Machiraju

Balancing the Air Element During Fall

According to the ancient East Indian science of Ayurveda, the entire universe is comprised of five elements. earth, water, fire, air and ether.

Each season is governed by one of theses elements and our bodies are thus affected by the dominating seasonal element.

The ancient science of Ayurveda outlines food, color therapy, sound therapy and holistic treatments to be undergone in each season to ensure perfect health.

Fall is a season that is ruled by Vata-or the air element.

The qualities of Vata are:

Dry

Cold

Light

Subtle

Rough

Mobile

During this time it is important to eat foods and take part in activities that counter these qualities to ensure perfect health.

When Vata goes out of balance sickness can occur. These sicknesses may be related to the joints-arthritis or the colon-constipation or the nerves-dizziness or the head allergies, headaches, earaches.

In order to avoid these types of ailments in the fall it is important to eat foods that counter Vata.

Some of these foods would include:

Cooked vegetables-green beans, potatoes, beets, asparagus, and carrots.

Cooked grains that are heavy in nature help to counter the light quality of vata. These include wheat, buckwheat, quinoa and rice.

Fruits that are juicy, such as apples, grapes, melons.

Food can be a little oilier at this time to counter the dry quality of vata that brings joint pain. The best oils to use are ghee and sesame oil. Eating a lot of soups is also good at this time.

The best legume to eat at this time is mung.

The best meats to eat during this time are chicken and turkey.

It is also very important during the fall to massage the body with sesame oil. During our youth we may not notice the effects of vata but as we age our bones will start to hurt during the fall. If we do regular oil massage all our lives arthritis will not affect us when we get older.

All spices can be used during the fall - cumin, coriander and dill are especially good.

The best tastes to eat during fall are sweet, salty and sour.

The Amazing Amla

Amla or Emblica officinalis is considered one of the best rejuvenate or Rasayana herbs in the world.

In south India amalaki is known as amla. The word amla means sour, this plant is one of the most sour things to be eaten.

Amalaki is also know as Dhatri or the nurse as it can be used not only to cure disease, but to sooth the mind and body and bring comfort and satisfaction.

It has so many amazing properties. It is cooling in virya, contains all six tastes accept salty and has thirty times the vitamin c of an orange and is probably only a fifth of the size. The beauty of the vitamin C in the amalaki plant is that it is protected by the tannins also present within the plant so it does not reduce with drying or heating.

Amalaki has the following properties: Fresh fruit is refrigerant, diuretic and laxative. carminative and stomachic. Dried fruit is sour and astringent. Flowers are cooling and aperient. Bark is astringent. It is anti-inflammatory. The herb is aphrodisiac, hemostatic, nutritive tonic, rejuvenate (for Pitta). It increases red blood cell count.

I have had many personal experiences that have built my strong faith in this pleasant little Indian Gooseberry.

I have seen my brother in law's hair turn from complete grey to full black in less than year with the application of amalaki oil.

I have seen my husband who is very high pitta and secondary kapha come out of his cycle of chronic throat infection, boy pain an lymph congestion after taking just 1 tbsp daily of amalaki churna for six months.

I have heard the story of my husband's grandfather who ate amalaki pickle each day and died at the age of ninety plus with all of his teeth and walked several miles daily. He was full of vitality to his last breath due to his use of amalaki and general adherence to ayurvedic principles.

I have used it to clear up skin eruptions.

I have used it on women with endometriosis and it has not only cleared up the endometriosis, but also cleared up scar tissue from several operations conducted to remove the endometriosis.

I have used Chyavanprash to build the immunity of many, from pregnant, to postnatal to infants. I have seen it build strong bones and teeth and gums in people who were weak in these areas.

I have used triphala, which contains one third part amalaki to treat sever digestive problems, liver weakness and general debility.

Amalaki is also used in many culinary preparations, pickles, juices and soups are made with this fruit.

Amalaki oil can be applied to the head to bring hair growth and to prevent greying and falling fo the hair.

Amla plasters can be made to apply to wounds or itchy skin.

Amalaki ghee can be prepared to reduce vata.

The applications of this plant are many and its healing abilities are almost endless.

I am always amazed by this plant when I suggested it to clients because it always shows me something new that it can do.

Amalaki has the following applications:

To reduce swelling

Reduce itching in scabies, poison ivy contact, psoriasis

Heals hemorrhoids

Used in hepatitis to increase red blood cells and heal the liver

Strengthen liver

Colitis

Reduce blood sugar in diabetes

Reduce lung inflammation

Reduce fever

Reduce premature greying and falling of hair

Cures gout

Cures dandruff

Strengthens gums, bones and teeth

Used to eradicate worms

Urinary system enhancer

Heals wounds

Reduces painful urination

Controls palpitations

Nervine tonic

Calms the mind and is used in mental disorders

Laxative

Curing eye disorders

GI tract disorders

Reducing Pitta

Increases lean muscle mass - good for athletes or those suffering from muscular dystrophy

Antioxidant and improves immunity

As we can see, amalaki can be used to eradicate so many ailments.
It is so powerful that It has the status of being one of the most sacred plants in India and is worshipped on Phalguna Ekadahi to free one from enemies and achieve union with God. It is also believed to be bhudevi as ail of its parts can be used to nourish humanity. I am happy that Amalaki is being honoured by having a contest in its name and hope to see the continuation of the increase of popularity of this sacred herb.
