The Tuxedoed Jesus

by David Ault
Some twenty plus years ago, a now famous spiritual author and lecturer was not shy in letting her opinion regarding a political leader be known. Not only was she disgruntled regarding his politics, but admittedly, she was even more brutal regarding her disdain of him as a human being. She felt justified in her convictions and was equally supported in them by the throngs of colleagues, clients, followers and friends that filled her immediate circle of influence.

During this time, she was invited to a posh, formal charity fundraiser where, attending alone, she mingled around the hors d'oeuvre table in her spaghetti-strapped sequined gown, perfectly coifed hair and accessorized militant beliefs. Across the room, a strikingly beautiful man dressed in a tuxedo smiled at her.

"Is he flirting with me?" she wondered, blushing at the mere idea.

And try as she might to appear nonchalant and uninterested, her eyes kept veering in his direction as if drawn by some unknown magnetic force. Rather than fear or judge him, she marveled at his concentrated gaze and his unfailing smile that seemed to melt through her armor and cause her eyes to tear.
Never moving from his seated position on the arm of the couch, he ignored all the others chatting in the room and kept his focus on her.

"So beautiful," she pondered. "Who is he and why does he keep smiling at me?"

Finally, weak-kneed and flustered, she willed her body to move in his direction after more than an hour of this game of eye tennis.

"Hello," she said, extending a shaky hand and introducing herself.

"Hello," he replied, calling her by name.

"Do we know each other?" she asked surprised.

"Yes," he softly answered, "You know me as Jesus." And before she could reply he quickly continued. "If you hold hate in your heart for another individual, then that makes you a warmonger."

"Excuse me?" she shockingly replied.

"Isn't that what you accuse your political leader of being?"

For the first time since she could remember, she stood there speechless.

With unwavering kindness he finished, "Know that if you continue to hate the individual then your actions are no different than the accused actions of the one you oppose so aggressively."

She could barely breathe. Turning, her hot and flushed face away, she quickly ventured towards the restroom. Behind the locked door, the unexpected vulnerability that had been pressing against the walls of her heart since first glancing at him, gave way to a flood of tears. When she felt composed enough to return to the party, the mysterious, beautiful man in the tuxedo was gone.

"Does anyone know who that man was?" she repeatedly asked those around.
Everyone's response was the same.

"What man?" they replied, each partygoer claiming to see no one matching her description of the tuxedoed Jesus.

The memory of that story came barreling back into my consciousness as I worked my way uptown among the half million protestors in New York City. I was here for a few weeks to work; to be a speaker at a large metaphysical church, see counseling clients, perform a concert with my friend Karen and to participate in a 9/11 service. My visit coincided with the National Convention at Madison Square Garden and the ensuing enclave of partisan energies felt as thick and complex as the raging opinions each side offered. I felt drained and my trip uptown seemed comparative to swimming upstream in tar. But I couldn't blame my lethargy on anyone or anything outside of me. Suddenly I knew why I felt bad. I was a warmonger, too.

I have presented myself as an advocate for peace as long as I've had a conscience. Yet, the hand held placards and protest yells woke within me the notion that what I really felt inside was hate; not simply hate for the death and ruin that any war brings, but true, bonafide hate for the man and the political party I thought responsible for it. I saw my participation in countless conversations, e-mail exchanges and internal damning regarding communal ideas of how "loathsome and horrid this leader has been."

Had I ever once stopped those dark diatribes and simply decided to pray for the individual? Had I ever once affirmed in mind that divine clarity and the highest good for all be shown to him and to the rest of our world's leaders? Not lately.

I know that had I been graded, I would have failed Peace Discipleship 101. Had I stood in front of a consciousness jury, I would have been found guilty on countless charges of thought crimes. I write this because today, I choose to own up to the awareness that Universal Law is NO respecter of thought. If I harbor ANY thought of ill will, let alone hate, towards another then I reap the rewards of getting hatred in return. That's the way the law works; period. That isn't a concept just for money, career or health; it's a universal law governing the entire realm of cause and effect. I cannot affirm a principle and deny it in the same breath. If I do not obey this clear, fundamental law with my thoughts then I am opposing the very thing that brought me into expression. We cannot, as scripture attests, "enter into the kingdom of Heaven, if at one and the same time we are believing for ourselves and beholding the beam in our brother's eye."

What is the kingdom of Heaven but another definition of peace on earth.

There, on that congested Manhattan sidewalk, I saw that I could not have it both ways. Each of us can only hope to bring to ourselves that which we draw through the avenue of love. As those who profess to be advocates of peace, we must speak, pray and be peace in ALL areas of our lives and towards ALL individuals.

No; we don't become doormats and condone behavior that is unloving or unjust. What we do is search our hearts for understanding and uphold all individuals in the true recognition that within all, regardless how dim, shines the light of God. And we pray, and we pray, and we pray ; not for our own agenda, but for that unfailing Divine Order to make It's presence known and fully activated in the demonstrations of human connection. And yes; we even protest ; realizing that when broken down, that word coordinates with the action that we are PRO (for) something positive; something that is moving us forward towards more light and more love on this planet - something that will stand the TEST of time and our faith. And we learn to do this without condemning another individual but championing liberty and justice for everyone who desires it. Let us vow to take the PRO test, a test of our own beliefs that commits to being for something and against nothing.

I know it feels radical. I know it presses our injustice buttons and it takes all the fun out of playing "ain't it awful" with our friends. But as metaphysician Ernest Holmes wrote, "we get only that which we think, no more and no less." So what do we really want - to be right or to be happy and at peace?
Will you pray with me in these final days of America1s decision making process the following?

Great masterful Spirit, the Great I AM, God in and through all things; I speak my word from the depth of my soul for an outpouring of clarity and love to rise forth and influence the decisions of all people, all leaders of this world. May each of us be able to tap into that place within that has never been violated, that place of absolute purity and peace. While there, let us forge together a union of heart and mind that calls forth decisions based on love, not fear. May each of us pause long enough to breathe in the recognition of our own personal Divinity and thus clearly see the Divinity in others. May each of us take the time to appreciate the liberties we have; both subtle and grand and strive to sustain those liberties for all lands, all people for all times. May we sustain a vision of peace on Earth. May we walk the walk towards that vision and outstretch our hands, inviting the rest of humankind to grab on and join in on the journey.

Knowing that only truth prevails, may we align with truth and let anything unlike that gently fall away. Giving thanks for the preciousness of life and for the power of our words, we commit this pray into action knowing that it is already done.
And together we say; and SO IT IS. Amen.

Please vote.
