Tarot: Moment to Moment

Moment to Moment
by Gigi Miner
Have you ever wondered how a columnist comes up with ideas for their monthly installments? Actually, the writing is not usually a problem for someone who loves to write. What I am discovering is that the first article, in any given venue, is not so easy to create. When I was asked to write this column, I was instilled with a variety of emotions. First, I was excited. Then, I wondered if I would have enough time to complete this every month. Then, I was excited again.

You may be noticing a pattern. The writer is told to write about that which they know. In my case, that could be a combination of lunacy and creativity. Each moment in my life yields something different. I am sure you could say the same about your life. If we stop to examine that of which our life is made, I think we could say that it is made up of moments. Each moment blends into the next.

What we do with this moment determines how the next will transpire. Imagine, one moment can change the course of your life. One moment can turn your life in a direction that you want it to go, or it can send you on a downward tumble that you had no intention of taking.

Suddenly our moment is not such a simple thing any more. Now our moment contains great power and potential. What would you do with those kinds of possibilities? How do you make those decisions that can alter the rest of your life? One method I use is the tarot.

As we take this little journey together, via this column, I hope we can explore, not only the deep, dark secrets behind the cards, but also life and love and joy and sorrow and any other thing that makes us feel that we are alive. At one moment, I may be very serious. At another moment, I may be totally silly and irreverent. For the most part, I think I will be somewhere in between.

Since this is a new journey, it seems only appropriate to take a look at the card that speaks so well about new journeys, The Fool. Our Fool can be seen in many different ways. Usually, he is depicted at the edge of a cliff, gazing off into the distance, completely unaware of any impending danger. A small dog will usually be by his side. Many say he is trying to warn his human friend and keep him from falling over the edge of the cliff. Another view could be that the Fool forgot the kibble again and the dog is looking to push him over into the abyss.

The Fool is a card that definitely lives moment to moment. He will seldom carry a heavy load. His pack is small. He finds what he needs along the way and seems to have no worry that his needs will not be met. How long has it been since we felt that way? When was the last time that you knew that everything you ever needed would be right there for you when you needed it?

When we venture into the adult world, we take on the responsibilities that go with that title. Many times, we join in a relationship with someone significant to us. From that, we may bring children into the family. There could even come a pet. By adding anyone else into our lives, we also add responsibilities. The Fool loses the freedom to do as he pleases. He is now obliged to care for the others in his life. Sometimes he fails at this task. Is it any wonder why that little dog wants to dump him over the cliff?

A Fool's journey is one of self. And, I believe, there should always be a little fool in all of us. To be weighed down by living, we can forget to enjoy life. Choosing to add responsibilities to your world need not remove from you the care of yourself. In fact, if you do not take care of your own needs, if they are not met, you will not only become incapable of caring for the others for whom you took responsibility, but you may also come to resent them.

I think many of us have heard the parable of the man who comes home from a bad day at work. His boss gives him a royal tongue-lashing. He comes home and yells at his wife. The wife, in turn, scolds the children for no apparent reason. The kids, then, go out and kick the dog. They say it rolls downhill. This is typical of what happens when we lose our Fool.

The Fool takes little notice of the ranting maniac in the office. His mind is occupied in going home and playing with the kids or throwing the ball for the dog. He is the one that walks out of that office and leaves it there. When he goes home, he is totally at home. His mind is not calculating all the work he needs to get done the next day at the office. He lives in the moment.

Yes, there is the down side to the Fool. He can be frivolous. He can be impetuous. There may be times when he forgets to pay the bills or he creates more bills then his paycheck can meet. Have you ever seen an otter play? They jump, swirl, and run around, belly sliding into the water. That animal would be a great companion for the Fool. They could belly flop into the water together, never caring from whence their dinner is coming; they are simply enjoying their playtime.

While the Fool card can give us all perspectives of life, the one I want to remember on this venture is that of new beginnings. Whatever life has thrown our way, there is always a chance to start over again. If we lost our way along the path, we can always find another path. That is the lesson of the Fool. You are never so lost that you cannot find your way again.

The Fool is always hopeful. He believes that, regardless of whether he falls off that cliff, surely there will be a ledge below to catch him. From there, he can begin a new adventure. In many ways, the Fool's belief that everything will always turn out all right is what keeps him from coming to harm. His belief that every step he takes is to learn something new motivates him to keep walking. Just around the corner, there could be something spectacular waiting for him.

If he did not keep going, he might miss his chance. Without traveling through this moment, he could not see the next. So, our Fool keeps traveling forward, moment to moment. He knows that if he just keeps going long enough, he will reach that place of which he dreams.

As I begin this journey for The Meta Arts Magazine, I hope you will want to journey with me. There are so many possibilities waiting for us. There are so many adventures to be had. I am looking forward to living this one, Moment to Moment.
