Dear Friends,
Do you feel your dreams calling you? Do you feel the yearning to bridge the dream into waking consciousness? Every year in early December, I offer a retreat on the Big Island of Hawaii. I call it a rejuvenue. We focus on dreaming and building your abilities to manifest your dreams. Have you ever wondered how we dream our lives and why we dream them the way we do? To understand this, I think of the times I shared with Twin Dreamers as I described them in my book Star Woman. Twin Dreamers is a shape shifter.
Agnes and Ruby attempted to help me understand Twin Dreamers' skill in their eloquent and humorous ways.
"Lynn, to understand Twin Dreamers and how she lives, you must return to this." She traced the lines of her dust drawing again. It had the effect of making me dizzy. "Here is your death," she said.
"That doesn't feel like death dust to me," Ruby said, taking a pinch of the fine powder between her fingers. "Death dust has more grit."
Agnes pushed her finger in the middle of the dust spiral. "When you are born, you come from the void. You come from the mystery. You are born out of formlessness from the center of the spiral. You dress yourself with the fine feathers of time and space, and you take on a mind. You think you are mind. Your earth walk is a spiraling outward from this center. As you progress, you become more and more earthbound. You take on form through experience and conditioning from your environment. You become encrusted with addictions and what you call time. To stay in form, you must develop a mind that is your ego, which again is a function of time."
"Get to the point," Ruby said. "Agnes is trying to tell you that Twin Dreamers has lost her mind."
"I don't understand," I said.
Ruby said, "Of course, you don't understand. If you understood, you'd be teaching us and we'd have a fool for a teacher." She laughed at her own statement.
"Twin Dreamers is no longer a part of the dream lodge of time," Agnes said. "There is a trinity of symbols confronting our earth walk here. In front of us is an eagle, a clock and a mole. Twin Dreamers was one of the few who was able to demolish the clock."
"I still don't understand. How can she smash the clock, time?" I asked.
"By dissolving her ego, so she can take on the shape of other egos. She has perfected this art to such a degree, she can shift her physical shape and become part of another dreamer's dream. How do you know that you're not a shape shifter in one form or another? Maybe you simply don't remember what you are dreaming!"
Ruby elbowed me in the ribs. "The secret is that all of us are shape shifters, but some of us know it and some of us don't." She reached over and, with a swipe, erased the spiral. "That's kind of what she did," she said, meaning Twin Dreamers."
How can I help you understand yourself as a shape shifter? My teachers always give me a task to learn by experience. These tasks help me to bring extraordinary concepts like shape shifting into ordinary reality. All of us in our own ways shape shifts when we set our intent to change something, whether it is to buy a car, change careers, redesign a room or even to execute an exercise regime. At some level we have to dream, to see in a new way. To do that we move out of form, we create a new paradigm. But those aren't always the easiest things to do because change holds up many mirrors.
Arion, the magnificent stallion who carried me between the worlds in Star Woman, was a great teacher for me. He held up many mirrors, painful mirrors, the most difficult mirrors of all for me to look into. But with the help of my teachers, Twin Dreamers, Agnes Whistling Elk and Ruby Plenty Chiefs, I was able to look into those mirrors in a way that lead me towards enlightenment.
And that is what I am trying to do for you, because these mirrors are so important, and we all need our teachers.
In the story, I describe the dream when Arion carried me to the four goddesses. They are the mirrors which we absolutely must find the courage and the willingness to look into if we would become enlightened:
- the bone goddess of our fears, which we give life to every time we refuse to look at our fears, when we become so closely identified with our fears that we need them to survive;
- the goddess of our death, which is found in the way we move, and sometimes don't move, through life situations;
- the goddess of our undirected thoughts, which we meet when we wallow in our sorrows or indulge ourselves in mindless daydreams without any intent whatsoever, depleting ourselves of all our vitality;
- and the goddess of our manipulations and tricks, which in so many respects determines whether we are moving towards enlightenment with our intent or whether we are moving further away from it through our manipulations and tricks.
I urged you to turn to The Power Deck to help you learn how to look into those mirrors and find the movement that is waiting for you within.
In The Power Deck book, there is an exercise in working with fear which I would ask you to do with me now. This is an exercise that you might want to become comfortable doing, because you can use it to help you every time you encounter fear in your life. A true warrior of heart learns never to let an opportunity to grow slip away!
"Fear is a shape-shifter's biggest enemy," Twin Dreamers taught me. "You must never run from fear. You must face it. Fear is a tracker that will hunt you down. He shoots his arrows just as you leap from one dream form into the other." You must learn to face
your fears, to look into their mirrors.
Set aside some time that is just for you. Center yourself, breathing deeply as you consciously let go of all the pressures of your day, perhaps sitting near your altar or in some other place that is special for you. Bring your journaling materials with you,
because it is important to write down what comes to you when you do these exercises; that is the only way you can truly become mindful as you move through life. It is how we learn to move in the world with intent; how we learn to dream only with intent, which Twin Dreamers teaches us is so very, very important.
Follow your breath in and out for a minute, remembering that breath is part of your life force. Then take your Power Deck and begin to rearrange the cards, not looking at them. Be conscious of any tightness in your stomach, or in some other area of your body where
you might feel uneasy. This is important.
Set your intent to look into the mirror of your fear. Maybe ask the Power Deck to show you what energy you need in order to look into this mirror. Then rub your palms together until they tingle, and blow your breath across them. Fan out the cards on a flat surface and hold your palms about one inch above them. You will feel heat from the deck. With your left hand, choose the card that feels warmest. Meditate on the picture of the card you drew; look up the Definition of the Card in the Power Deck Book and bring that into your reflections.
Then read the message on the other side card, and spend some quality time thinking about what this card is telling you about your fear. In my book, I used the example of the Impeccability card. If I were to draw this card, I would look at what fear is within me that makes it difficult for me to be an impeccable warrior of power. This is essential information which I need to have.
When you are ready, return your thoughts to the part of your body that felt tense or uneasy as you began to rearrange the cards. Explore the aspect of fear that is hidden there, so that you can release it. Then take your journal and write it down; create a road map for yourself to follow the next time this fear comes up, instead of letting it control you, and move back into your body.
Repeat this exercise with each of the four goddesses; repeat it every time you intend a new dream. And as you do, you may be aware of yourself shape shifting into new paradigms!
In the Spirit of Aloha,
Lynn Andrews

POWER DECK CARD FOR THIS MONTH: Dream

16 - DREAM - West
One day you will remember the Great Dream, and the way will become known to you. You entered into life through the veil of the Dream, because your reason fro being here must be kept secret from you until you find your way home. You don't know who you are, but one fine day you will remember. It is like creation looking for itself. You are in oneness with all life, though you are not aware of it. You will awaken from the Dream. Let the Great Mother rest within your spirit. She is the universe. She is the womb of all life. She is the light that shines from your eyes, illuminating your daily dreams. The possibilities you dream of will become your reality.
