Following a Secondary
but Influential Pathway
|
 |
by Noel Tyl

 |
Just look at the backlog of Vocational Profiling exercises we have studied here over the months!! And every scenario follows stringently -but creatively-the Midheaven Extension methodology. We extend the Midheaven any way we can throughout the horoscope, throughout the wholeness of the person, to ascertain as much as possible about what the person needs to do vocationally to be fulfilled.
The concept of Level plays a very important role [please see last month's essay]. Not everybody interested in music becomes an opera singer or concert pianist. But being on the musical path is the issue; doing the work fulfillingly. -The astrologer must be able to help focus these considerations
and it is rarely easy.

The initial observation -even before concentrating on the Midheaven-jumps off the page: The Moon is in Leo in the 10th House. We know that this individual need for high self-dramatization is very high and that the 10th House placement suggests always a take-charge need in the job orientation. In other words, this lady will surely rebel against working in strict structures; she would prefer to be her own boss. [Note that Uranus squares this Moon as well.]
This Moon rules the 9th and the tension from Uranus suggests that her education would be interrupted. With Jupiter well positioned in the 9th, there could eventually be an overcompensatory movement to gain more education, but the Level is surely compromised in the early adult emergence into the workplace.
Those two observations are key within our profiling work to follow.
1. The Sun rules the Midheaven, It is disposited by Venus, which, in turn is disposited by the Moon. We come back to the first core awareness of this lady's needs and capabilities. -We can note that the Sun is quindecile the Ascendant (and that Pluto squares the Ascendant) suggesting a strong echo of the Moon observation above: high individuation is required for this woman to do good work and to be comfortable.
2. The path of extension through the Sun, ruler of the Midheaven keeps us in a Lunar loop. It will not go as far as we would like it to go to be maximally helpful. So, we look for aspects to the Midheaven, and we uncover a second pathway: Saturn sextiles the Midheaven and is peregrine. Saturn rules the 3rd, and we note that Saturn is in Gemini, conjunct Mercury the final dispositor of the horoscope. -These second pathway signposts point conclusively to the 3rd House; there is no doubt about it.
So, this point, we ascertain a strongly self-possessed, dramatic, take-charge lady active in 3rd House matters. She is surely hampered by an interrupted education, which will adjust the Level of our analysis, our discussion with her about vocational potentials.
3. The 3rd House is not just communications; it is also retail activity, salesmanship, and transportation. -We would keep these things in mind. We would focus them with strong importance since Saturn is peregrine and conjoins Mercury, the final dispositor of the horoscope.
STOP
Certain kinds of selling can allow this lady dramatic freedoms. A good suggestion to her would be that she could be involved with the glamour of cosmetics, for example [see Neptune semisquare the MC, with Neptune on the Aries Point, with MC=Venus/Neptune], as a chain representative, working on her own but supported by a large concern.
Certain dimensions of transportation can give her autonomy, soloistic position: she could drive a bus, engineer a train, transport the elderly (the Saturn involvement with Mercury, Mercury also ruling the 8th); she could be a prestige-line chauffeur!
This lady was a high-school dropout, a divorced single mother. She went to work in retail sales (in a cheese shop). Then, to make more money, she went to work as a school bus driver and then moved on to driving a city bus, which was more stable and lucrative.

This second horoscope presents a difficult, elusive profiling matrix. After the Midheaven extension seems to be unproductive, a secondary path does present itself and is helpful, but before the fact of knowing, this is a tough discussion with this client. -And that is not wrong or terribly unusual; many people have much confusion about how they can put their best foot forward into the job market, and so much of that depends on the considerations of Level (see last week's column). The horoscope shows these things.
1. The Midheaven in Leo is ruled by the Sun which, in its conjunctions with Mercury, Jupiter, and Uranus can be read as a midpoint picture Sun=Mercury-Jupiter/Uranus. This is a picture of high promise: resourcefulness, quick readiness to seize any opportunity.
2. The dispositor of the 9th House group and ruler of the 9th is the Moon, and the Moon is conjunct Neptune in the 12th House. Immediately, this routing takes on the connotation of interrupted education and diffusion of social fit-in positioning (Libra). But, with the 9th House emphasis and the Moon-Neptune 12th House focus, we can begin to get a sense of a consultant helpful to others. Still, the education is surely not supportive. -The sense of all this softens, blurs, weakens.
3. Venus-Pluto are in conjunction at the Midheaven, and this suggests a show-business touch and a public thrust (Venus rules the 7th) that may counterbalance the Moon-Neptune focus in the 12th (also ruled by Venus).
4. But I'm foundering with this routing. I can't make much out of it. The Venus dispositorship of Moon-Neptune brings us back to the Sun's dispositorship of Venus-Pluto, and that leads us to the Moon again, the dispositor of the Sun, ruler of the Midheaven. -What to do?
5. We look for a second routing that can extend the Midheaven outreach; usually through planets in strong aspects to the Midheaven. That's not the case here, but Pluto-Venus are quintile the Ascendant, Pluto rules the Ascendant and disposits Saturn at the Ascendant. Perhaps that can help.
6. This Saturn position (in Scorpio as well) would certainly add to the ministerial sense of helping others as a compassionate consultant (astrologer, therapist, minister, etc.), but again, there is every indication of no credentialization (college education) to support such a career path.
7. But Saturn rules the 3rd. -And this is where I stop. Are we looking at a specially talented man (the cluster in the 9th) "settling" for a job in retail, a salesman position -using his personal charisma to maximum advantage (the Moon-Neptune conjunction in Libra; the Venus importance, ruling the 7th and being in the 10th)? --Are we maybe looking at someone who can feel fulfilled by administering transportation services, perhaps as a travel agent, etc.?
STOP
This man has much interest in astrology etc. He has had several jobs, including running a restaurant with high-school friends and his brother (3rd House), and being a professional magician (Moon -Neptune, 12th House). He was advised by his bank when applying to purchase a home that his income fluctuated too much. So, he realized how he always had had so much enjoyment driving, and he became a bus driver. He has done very well, and feels fulfilled.
***Remember, the key to being maximally helpful with your client in vocational profiling is to discuss what the horoscope suggests and listen to the client take the conversation further into his or her reality. Then, adjustments are made and confirmation is secure.
Of course, there are times when the profiling is laser sharp, and the astrologer does a miraculous job!!!
An intensely information packed Vocational Analysis Booklet guide with full development of the Midheaven Extension Process (some 75 pages, 37,000 words, and 25 examples) is available at noeltyl.com, MENU, BOOKS.
