Dear Friends:

You know, it used to be that all you needed to do to prevent the ravages of truth decay was to use mental floss a couple of times a day. No more. These days the managed media impropaganda machine is cranking out so much toxic BS, that our skeptic system has overflowed, and we end up swallowing huge ironies whole. Like these:

• The best way to preserve our freedoms is by taking them away.
• To create peace, we must fight perpetual war.
• The candidate who was wounded in Vietnam has his patriotism questioned and his wounds ridiculed, while the one who went “missing in inaction” is all of a sudden the warrior king.
• The Republicans pitch themselves as the party of fiscal fitness and frugality, yet have run up the largest deficit ever. They insist simultaneously that the world is becoming more dangerous every day -- and that every day, they are making the world safer.

And now as we mark the third anniversary of the most deadly attack ever to occur on American soil, we are faced -- if we choose to face it -- with another elephant-sized irony: The greatest crime of the new century (or maybe we should say the New American Century), a national commission and investigation (resisted to the last by the Administration) that shows massive intelligence and military failures ... and not one individual is cited, demoted or fired for any mistake. Huge questions are going unanswered, not to mention answers going unquestioned.

Until now. A Zogby Poll last week tells us that 49% of New Yorkers believe there was government complicity in the 9/11 attacks, and 66% called for an independent investigation, not to be confused with the one already conducted by the 9/11 Omission -- oops, I mean “Commission.”

You may not need to be a skeptical New Yorker to sense that Americans haven’t been told the whole truth, but now there is startling evidence that we haven’t been told the “hole” truth either. The “hole truth” I refer to involves the size of the hole that a huge 757 would have made in the Pentagon -- compared to the actual one whatever crashed into it made. While we have unfortunately gotten used to being deceived by our government about all manner of matters, to face a deception this huge can be disheartening, if not downright scary. Now if you’re one of those people who are put off by anything that even remotely smells like “conspiracy hookum” we totally understand. And if your first impulse is to put your hands over your eyes and over your ears (you will actually need an extra pair of hands for this one, folks ... no need for a hand to go over your mouth, that’s why we have “free speech zones”), we can understand that too. Just remember, though, that what you don’t know can indeed hurt you. Don’t be like that person we heard about who, when confronted by a particularly egregious perpetration by our misleaders said, “Well, it may be true, but I don’t believe it.” If you’re suffering from an overfull skeptic system and you need a little fortitude, click here.
