Alternative Health & Healing: Homeopathy

Relief for your fatigue
part 1
by C. Senbita Carter
You're feeling burnt out or exhausted. The doctor ran tests and came back with no discernable problem. All you do know is that you feel weak, tired and you want your energy levels to return to normal. The problem could be due to weakness of the nervous system. This multi-patterned fatigue in the 19th century was labeled neurasthenia. The term neurasthenia is rarely used today. An American physician by the name of G. M. Beard named this ailment "Beard's Disease". Considered a rare psychological disorder, a look at the symptom picture (below) suggests the ailment may be far from rare.

Why am I so tired?

Does your diet contain fast foods or processed foods? Processed foods account for a major part of the American diet. Many contain chemicals, which are best avoided. In addition all of the ingredients are not listed, so you do not really know what you are eating. White flour and white sugar are not nutritious and provide empty calories. Air pollution contains many sulfuric and acidic compounds adding additional strains on that great detoxifying organ, the liver. Let's not forget second hand cigarette smoke. Our urban landscapes do not contain many trees and their numerous health benefits. I could go on. But the point is to realize the choices we make our critical to our well being.
Last but not least, mismanaged emotions are silent causes of many chemical and energy changes in the bodymind system. Anger, jealousy, sadness, embarrassment, and grief to name a few can cause a profound drain on ones energy. Negative emotional expressions are a form of pollution; even an excess of "positive" emotions can cause imbalance. Drugs are not the answer. Masking a problem only makes it change its form, just like a many-headed hydra. As soon as you surmise you have solved one problem you have in effect, created ten more. Instead begin to seek healing instead of masking over problems. You have every right to heal yourself.

Help for Students

In this culture we live strange lives. It starts so early in life. All over America from age 6 weeks to age 66, the clock says it is time to get up and get out of the house. For the very young it is day care, babysitters and pre-school and it lasts for at least another twelve years of school and throughout most careers. Many Americans are sleep deprived. Overtime this pace exerts a toll. If you are finding it difficult to pick up a book to study or the information is not sinking in as it should, part of the problem could be you are mentally exhausted. Review the following remedies.

Common Symptoms of Neurasthenia

Exhaustion is common in neurasthenia. A wide range of symptoms can present with the fatigue. The most common symptoms are:
§ insomnia
§ exhaustion after slight mental or physical activity
§ fatigue
§ sensitivity to noise
§ memory loss
§ irritability
§ back pain
§ muscular weakness
§ psuedo angina
§ loss of sexual power
§ mental exhaustion
§ sighing

Homeopathic Remedies

The following descriptions offer a select and brief materia medica. A materia medica is a reference to medicines and their uses. For example there are herbal materia medicas, used in Chinese, Western or Indian medicine. If one studied the healing power of crystals and it was codified, then that would be a crystal "book of medicines" or materia medica. Homeopathic materia medicas list many substances from the plant, animal and mineral kingdoms and other materials also.

Selection of remedies in homeopathy is individualized. Always, for the best results. When you read the list of remedies you will note that even though they have all been used for tiredness, there are slight differences in the picture of each substance.
Note: this is a very small listing of remedies that may be suitable.

Aletris (Alet.)

Primary areas of the body affected are the female organs and blood, often caused by loss of fluids (i.e. blood). Feels better when passing gas, and bending backward.

Debility, person always tired. Parts feel heavy. May have anemia and constipation. Early and profuse menses, there may be a tendency to abortion.

Alumina phosphorica (Alum-p.)

Mental prostration associated with extreme weariness and irritability due to mental breakdown at the end of college life. Is valuable for the chronic effects of grief.
There is a strong desire for open air, which brings relief. Sensitive to cold which aggravates. Vertigo in morning, on closing eyes. Pains; bruised; burning; pressing; worse morning and night. Electric shocks worse after sleep. Standing is extremely tiresome.

Anacardium (Anac.)

Maliciousness, with a tendency to curse and swear. Person is very sensitive to being offended. Memory loss, head feels foggy. Stomach pains, which feel better after eating. Pain in different parts, as if a plug had entered. Trembling debility and paralytic weakness. Itching of the skin, worse from scratching.

Arsenicum Album (Ars.)

The disposition is depressing, melancholy, despairing and indifferent.
Mood is anxious, fearful, restless and full of anguish. There is irritability and a sensitive personality. Mentally restless, but physically too weak to move; cannot rest in any place; changing places continually; wants to be moved from one bed to another, and lies now here, now there.

Thinks it is useless to take medicine, because they are incurable. Worse being alone.
Attacks of anxiety at night driving out of bed. Burning pains; which are better by heat, hot drinks, hot application. Burning thirst without special desire to drink or thirst for cold water; drinks often, but little at a time, eats seldom, but much.
Diarrhea, after eating or drinking, followed by great weakness.
Excessive exhaustion from least exertion, exhaustion is not felt while lying still, but when on movement is surprised to find himself so weak. Feels worse after midnight (1 to 2 A.M. or P.M.); from cold, a cold drinks or food, when lying on painful side and with the head low.

Avena sativa (Aven.)

Avena sativa is oats. Acts directly upon the brain and through it, affects the functions of nutrition, primarily increasing nerve force and stimulating the nutrition of the whole system. It is ordinarily used in material doses (two to thirty drops of the tincture) for the purpose of obtaining its primary effects when the nerve forces are exhausted. Nervous exhaustion when caused by too much brainwork, worry or anxiety.

Kali phosphoricum (Kali-p.)

Worse after eating; before menses; cold; noise or when tired.
Better after sleep, light massage or open air.

Kali phos. is the great American remedy for the brain and nerves. In the same manner no people abuse their brains and nerves, as do Americans. Everything, our education, our business, our pleasure, we rush at a killing pace under the highest excitement. Used as a food to nourish the brain and nerves under such conditions or as a remedy to restore them after the collapse, Kali phos. has no equal.
Some of the conditions for which Kali phos. is indicated:
brain-fag
nervous insomnia
hysteria
neurasthenia
fainting
nervous stomach
insomnia with an active mind

Useful for those who take their sorrows, their pleasures or their business to bed with them (Scutellaria, Coffea). When they do sleep, they dream lascivious dreams or talk in their dreams. May be hard to awaken, and cross, peevish, or angry if they are awakened. Hysteria when the patient laughs and cries, shuts herself up in a room and moans and sobs, covers herself with bed clothes and screams, trembles and shakes so she wants to be held. May void urine in small amounts every few minutes. Has globus hystericus (sensation of a lump in the throat); feeling as if tongue cleaved to the roof of the mouth. The patient is readily startled by a noise or touch.
Yellow discoloration of urine (deep yellow), tongue and mucous discharges.

Phosphoric acid (Ph-ac.)

Effects the mind and nerves. Weakness caused from loss of fluids, such as bleeding, heavy menses or sexual excesses. Fatigue. Feels better wrapping up and after a short nap. Feels weak or debilitated. Quiet. Is indifferent and apathetic, with tendency to diarrhea or sweatiness. Slow grasp. Can't collect his ideas, hunts for words, poor memory and dull despair. Doesn't want to talk. Craves juices. Is sleepy in the daytime and wakeful at nighttime.

Part two will include additional homeopathic remedies.

For notes on how to use the remedies see my September 2004 article.
If you have any topics you would care to see discussed from a homeopathic viewpoint, send me an email. Let me hear from you. In whatever way you can, work for true health freedom. Write letters or call your legislators, educate yourself, meditate and pray for peaceful and wise change. God Bless.
