Sanskrit name Bramhi
Latin Bacopa monnieri
Common Indian Pennywort
Bramhi meaning one who is alert of full of knowledge. The Hindu God of creation is Brahma.
Habitat: This herb grows in the damp marshy areas of India.
Medicinal Uses: According to Ayurveda, it is bitter, pungent, heating, emetic, laxative and useful in bad ulcers, tumours, enlargement of spleen, indigestion, inflammations, leprosy, anaemia, biliousness etc. According to Unani system of medicine, it is bitter, aphrodisiac, good in scabies, leucoderma, syphilis etc. It is promising blood purifier and useful in diarrhoea and fevers. It can also be used to heal injuries to tissues, enhance memory, and treat skin rashes and acne.
This herb is not only powerful and wide reaching in its application, but it also tastes wonderful and is almost instantly soothing.
I have used this herb with many of my clients for a wide range of health concerns and in a wide range of preparations and have had wonderful results.
Case studies
Case One
Forty year old woman ailment: history of depression, thyroid imbalance after hysterectomy, nervousness and nerve pain in the neck. Hepatitis C, extremely high white blood cell count and liver function low.
Suggested treatment: Bramhi gritham ghee or clarified butter mixed with ghee and ginger. Results after one week nerve pain and nervousness had diminished dramatically, the client said that she could instantly feel the grounding effect of the herb and felt calmer than she had in a decade.
Results after one month the herb had begun to regulate thyroid function and the womans white blood cell count began to reduce and her liver was on the mend. Her healing continued and she could slowly reduce the intake of the ghee from i tsp daily to enjoying eat a couple times a week.
Case Two
Thirty seven year old woman ailment: nervousness and lack of mental focus.
Suggested Treatment: 1 tsp Bramhi with a tsp of organic honey mixed in a glass of milk before bed.
Results: The woman said that she could feel the effects of the herb immediately, she felt instantly grounded and calm and found that she had a lot more ability to focus. She had come to me with no major health concerns, but wanted to find out her career path. She said that the Bramhi had helped her relax and that she was able to focus more on her goals rather than getting upset and irritated with the little stresses in life. She continues to take the Bramhi with milk whenever she feels tired, stressed or confused.
Case Three
Thirty Two year old woman Ailment: mild rash on face.
Suggested Treatment: Mix one teaspoon of Bramhi with just enough water to make a paste and apply to the face each morning.
Results after one week, the woman said that her skin had not only cleared, but it had become softer than it had been originally and she had also begun using the Bramhi paste on the rest of her body. She was very happy with the results and the rash has not returned.
