What Was Lost,
Now Is Found:
Feng Shui At Work

The other day our neighbor JoAnne came by the house distraught and near tears. She had a stack of freshly printed leaflets in her hand and was going house-to-house leaving one at each door. Her cat was lost. My heart ached as I thought of my own three cats and how I would react if one of them was missing. Watching JoAnne struggle to keep her composure, I knew Id be hysterical by now.
I took one of her flyers printed with a photo of Mort, her kitty of ten years. He was an indoor cat, never did have an inclination to go outside. Mort always seemed happiest on a bed or soft chair somewhere. But two days ago, before the sun had even broken through, with no collar and no warning, Mort had a change in plans and bolted out the door.
Desperate, JoAnne was walking the neighborhood, talking to neighbors, giving them her flyers, even hoping Mort would hear her voice and come out from under a bush somewhere. But this was the second day and no Mort. JoAnne was exhausted.
"Got any Feng Shui for this one?" Her comment was harsh and angry, but I knew she was speaking from a hurt place in her heart. I could see she was at the end of her rope so I asked if shed like to come in for a few minutes. It was starting to sprinkle. We had a cup of tea and talked about Mort. She recounted to me again in great detail how he had slid out, how he had never done that before, how he just seemed to disappear into the dark morning hour.
"Are you serious about doing some Feng Shui?" I asked. She shrugged her shoulders. "What can it hurt?" Knowing I wouldnt get her undivided attention, I explained as simply as I could that an important part to Feng Shui is the intention. JoAnne needed to get clear about her focus and what she wanted out of all of this. That sometimes it seemed obvious what her intention might be, but maybe there was some other underlying focus. She was looking at me like I had just told her to set her hair on fire. "What do I want? Is that what youre asking? What do I want? I want Mort back, thats what I want."
"Is that what Mort wants?" I asked.
"Why wouldnt he want that?" She rolled her eyes. "Of course, thats what he wants" she stated loudly. "Hes king of the house. He sleeps in my bed. He gets special food. Why wouldnt he come back to that?"
JoAnne and I werent best friends. All I knew about her was that she was single and had a cat named Mort. Wed see each other at block parties over the years. Shed occasionally stop by during her evening walks to talk to one of our cats or admire my husbands gardens. Otherwise, we didnt socialize together. One time she confessed she had bought my book and actually found it interesting. We had spent some time talking about Feng Shui here and there. I could see she had been intrigued by the idea of energy, intention and flow. Yet now, during real life, during moments of panic and fear, the whole intention idea seemed absurd and pointless to her.
"What do you think Mort wants?" I pressed the issue.
"How would I know," she said. "Hes a cat; he doesnt verbalize very well." "Well, lets pretend were asking him what he wants and lets pretend he can tell you. Ask him." JoAnne sat there for a few minutes. We were both listening to a steady downpour of rain.
"Mort says he wants to be dry." I couldnt blame her for being sarcastic.
"Pretend youre Mort for a minute. Hows he doing?"
"Hes doing better than I am!" she quickly answered. "In fact, hes having a great time. Hes seeing new things, going places hes never been. Hes figuring things out for himself. Hes even dry! He found a little shrub to crawl under and hes as dry as if he were on my bed!" This was the first time JoAnne had smiled since shed sat down.
"Now, lets go back to the intention piece, JoAnne. What do you want?"
"I guess I want Mort to be happy."
"You realize that might mean hell never return to you, dont you?"
JoAnne nodded. "But if hes happy, I guess Ill have to let him go."
Before she left, I showed JoAnne where her Children area was located in her home and on her lot (looking at the house or lot, middle right-hand side). I knew Mort was like a child to her so it seemed appropriate to suggest she make changes in that area with her new intention. I suggested she clean out any clutter that might be accumulating in the Children area inside her home or outside in the yard. I also suggested she fix anything that needed repair. Then, to help Mort find his way home, if he chose to do so, I suggested she place one of his kitty toys in a window near the front door so hed recognize the house.
Two days passed before JoAnne stopped by again. She looked 100% better so I figured Mort had returned, but no, he hadnt. JoAnne had just spent the last couple days cleaning out her linen closet, however. It seems when she figured out where the Children area was located, and the closet landed in this spot. The linen closet had been a project she could never get to. But with this new Feng Shui information, she found tackling the closet a good way to release pent up energy and emotions. She went on and on about new shelf paper, a new light bulb and a door knob. JoAnne clearly found the project exhilarating. She was still remembering her connection with Mort, that he was okay and that he was having a good time. She was even willing to admit he might be having a good time yet not be alive. One of his toys had been placed in the front window just in case.
Another two days passed when JoAnne called that Mort had been returned to her. Someone had seen her flyer and called. She said he looked great and hadnt lost an ounce of weight. It was evident he had indeed had an adventure for a week. JoAnne didnt lose sight of the fact that she had to let him go before he could return. She got her lost cat back, her linen closet cleaned out and found a new perspective on Feng Shui.
