This month we are going to take a look at some of the feminine forces in the Tarot world - the literal flesh and blood ladies that have had such a huge impact on one of the greatest tools of empowerment that we will ever know. Some of the names will be very familiar - some you may not recognize. Each of these feminine spirits has gifted the world of Tarot with their energies, insights and their own personal joy of life.
One such lady is Marie-Anne Le Normand (1768-1843), known as the Sibilla of the Salotti. Thought by some to be connected with the Empress Josephine, Mlle Le Normand used many different types of divination, of which the Tarot was but one. Her influence on divination continues to this day through the Le Normand Oracle deck (a non-Tarot divination deck). It is interesting to note that to protect herself, the sign over her doorway read "Bookshop", as it was against the law to delve in divination.
Pamela Colman-Smith (Pixie Smith) (1878-1951) was born in England of American parents and raised in Jamaica. An artist, illustrator and writer, she met A. E. Waite while both were members of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. She went on to illustrate what is known as the Rider-Waite deck, which carries with it the distinction of being the first deck to illustrate the pips. Her artwork in the cards is admired to this day, although she herself died in poverty, unrecognized for her efforts in the written and art worlds.
Lady Frieda Harris (1877-1962) was the wife of liberal British member of the Parliament Sir Percy Alfred Harris. At the time Lady Frieda Harris met Aleister Crowley, she was already a member of a theosophical society called Co-Masonry. Lady Frieda Harris worked with Aleister Crowley as illustrator for the Thoth Tarot - a project that lasted five years. Although Crowley retained all of the royalties from the initial sale of the deck, Lady Frieda Harris retained complete ownership of the copyright to the paintings and the deck. After her death, the original paintings and the rights of her heirs went to the Warburg Institute in England. As with Pixie Smith, Lady Frieda Harris died in poverty.
Jessie Burns Park (1889-1964) worked with Paul Foster Case as illustrator for the BOTA (Builders Of The Adytum) Tarot. The BOTA deck was based closely on the Rider-Waite deck, except that it was printed in black and white, with the intention that the student learn by coloring in the deck themselves. The Minor Arcana do differ from the Rider-Waite in that they revert back to the pips only presentation (they are not illustrated).
Janet Berres founded the International Tarot Society (which is no longer in existence), and authored the book Textbook of the Tarot (1990, 1997 - published by the International Tarot Society). Through the auspices of the ITS Janet gifted the Tarot world with a place to get together and know each other. The ITS presented several World Tarot Conferences, which drew the Tarot world together to hear such Tarot luminaries as Carol Jean Rose, Eden Gray, Robert V. O'Neill, Arnell Ando, Thallasia, Julie Cuccia-Watts, Norma Cowie, Rachel Pollack, Mary Greer, Geraldine Amaral, Gail Fairchild, Brian Williams ... the list seems endless!
Gail Fairchild is the author of Choice Centered Tarot (2000), which addresses relationships of all forms - romantic, familial, friendships, work relationships, as well as our relationship to ourselves. This is a powerful book, taking the Tarot to a new level - very grounded in heart centered consciousness.
Eden Gray (birth/death information not found) is probably best known for her books Tarot Revealed (1960), Complete Guide To The Tarot (1970) and Mastering The Tarot (1973). Hers was some of the earliest work available on the Tarot, and was presented in a very simplified, easy to understand format. It is interesting to note that Gray came to the Tarot essentially through the back door - she was a bookstore owner who couldn't answer her customers Tarot related questions, so she decided to study the Tarot, and ended up writing her own books!
Mary K. Greer is a name that is certainly familiar to most of us. She is the author of Tarot For Yourself (1970, 2002), Tarot Constellations (1987), Tarot Mirrors (1988), Women Of The Golden Dawn (1994), The Complete Book Of Tarot Reversals (2002), Understanding The Tarot Court (2004), The Essence of Magic: Tarot, Ritual and Aromatherapy. She taught Tarot at the Omega Institute for sixteen years, and has been featured at many Tarot seminars and symposiums. Her style of Tarot is interactive, and she is currently working on the subject of emotions as related to
the individual Tarot cards. Mary is the founder of the Iseum of Isis Aurea.
Gertrude Moakley's work as a library cataloger lead her to doing research on Tarot iconography. Among her works are an incisive introduction to a reprint of A. E. Waits Pictorial Key To The Tarot, and the book The Tarot Cards Painted by Bonifacio Bembo for the Visconti-Sforza Family, subtitled An Iconographic and Historical Study. Before this time, there were no books discussing the iconography of specific decks.
Ffiona Morgan is author and illustrator for the Daughters of the Moon Tarot (1976, 2000) - a non-traditional, 75 card round deck based on Goddess centered spirituality from around the world.
Vickie Noble is co-author/illustrator for the Motherpeace Tarot, a round 78 card Goddess based deck. She is an author, scholar and shamanic healer, and teaches in the Women's Spirituality programs at California Institute of Integral Studies and New College in San Francisco. Vickie is also author of Motherpeace: A Way to the Goddess Through Myth, Art and Tarot.
Rachel Pollack is a renowned author, teacher and artist. Her work includes 78 Degrees of Wisdom (1978,1980), The Forest of Souls (2002), The Complete Illustrated Guide To The Tarot, the text for the Salvador Dali and Haindl Tarot decks and the text for The Kabbalah - A Journey In Balance And Growth , which was done in conjunction with the Tree of Life painting done by Hermann Haindl - which accompanies the book in poster form. Rachel has also taught at the Omega Institute, holds continuing classes in New York City, and does extensive seminar/symposium work.
Barbara Rapp is well known as the organizing force behind LATS (Los Angeles Tarot Symposium), and as the owner of the Crystal Cave metaphysical bookstore. Over the years, Barbara has provided a gathering place for Tarot aficionados to hear such Tarot luminaries as Mary K. Greer, Rachel Pollack, Lon Milo DuQuette and more. Added bonus - the availability of numerous Tarot decks, books and Tarot related items.
Thallasia is well known as the organizing force behind BATS (San Francisco Bay Area Tarot Symposium). Thallasia provides a gathering place for Tarot aficionados to hear such Tarot luminaries as Mary K. Greer, Lon Milo DuQuette and James Rickleff, along with up and coming people in the Tarot field. Along with Tarot workshops, lectures and presentations, there is the availability of Tarot readings and a Tarot Bazaar.
Karen Vogel is co-author/illustrator of the Motherpeace Tarot, a round 78 card Goddess based deck. She also wrote Motherpeace Tarot Guidebook. Karen's background is in women's studies, art and shamanism.
Barbara Walker is author and illustrator for the Barbara Walker Tarot, a deck based on mythology and the power of the feminine.
Each of these ladies has contributed a great deal to the world of Tarot - as authors, artists and teachers, they help fine tune what the Tarot can do for us, as well as giving Tarot the feminine/Goddess base that will carry us into the future.
I have enjoyed my time here with you. May each of you follow your paths to the depths that you are taken, with joy and a sense of peace and personal accomplishment.
