Prayer for the False Face
I am a wise one. I come from the faraway and I can lead you there.
I walk with the winds.
I am an important one.
I cling to the life of the spirit.
I am a false face healer.
I walk with the power of the sun and the mysteries of life.
I heal the mind and the heart.
I am an important one.
I am a being of sacred words.
I unravel the mysteries of your pain so that you may find courage.
May you learn to follow the sacred ways.
I am of the light and the holy ones.
I walk in the land of the spirit, and I walk on the earth.
I honor all that is sacred.
Dear Friends,
Agnes Whistling Elk said to me many years ago that we are all called and we are all chosen, but so very few of us have the courage to follow our dreams and become whole. Discovering your "false face" and creating your shaman face of power is one important way to journey down the trail to personal power.
Masks of Power
In making your Face of Power, there are several steps that you need to be reminded of as you go along the path. First, pray to the Great Spirit for guidance and understanding, and give thanks for your ability to learn.
Second, you must identify the personas that have been a part of your life for so long, the personas that are most likely false faces in society that you have worn to protect yourself, to do what you think enhances your power but really bleeds your power away. When you have identified those masks that no longer serve you, then move into the realm of the dream world, the subconscious within the process of visualization, and meet the dark side of yourself that you have so carefully crafted throughout your life. Then when you meet those aspects that are so often negative, you can find the source of their power, where they live in your body, and define what names they have in your life.
You need to move about changing those false faces, tearing them away from your original nature, and hopefully, discarding them. This prepares you for your newly created "true face," that face that you wear in your daily life that will become a face of integrity for you. You will no longer need to hide behind various false personas. You will be able to begin living your medicine and living your truth in the world. Then and only then are you ready to discover your face of power.
The World Condition and the Masks we all Wear
I was sitting in council with the Sisterhood of the Shields not long ago and my oncerns were heavy for the condition of the world. "Acceptance." Ruby said, "is the way power is testing you at this time."
A great being of light accepts everything totally. Even death or life is absolutely accepted because the great being of light trusts in infinite existence. The infinite knows no boundaries -- it is unconditional. To accept all that is -- is the mark of a warrior of spirit. Accept the bitterness and the sweetness of your life with equanimity, ignoring the pull to judge with your likes and your dislikes.
Once you find your serenity, you become the exquisite silence in the midst of a world spinning with fire and negativity. Your method is your ability to be the sacred witness. This seems to be a time of deep polarity and it is a test of power to see if you can maintain your clarity, your purity and your courage to trust. The reaction from our hearts is that we want to do something for peace and I say to you that the world's dilemma is within your own soul. We are all responsible for the false decisions and the negativity that wants to grab our attention and take us out of our
exquisite original nature, our presence in the now.
This is not to say that remembering our existence in history does not teach us for it does. But living in the past or the future is very dangerous to your wellbeing. The only place of equanimity is in the now. It is very difficult to live without judgement when you see great wrongs being enacted all around you. But perhaps Great Spirit has a different frame of reference and is teaching humanity about evolvement. To evolve we must grow. Oftentimes human beings need pain to move us out of our ennui and into the highest realms of consciousness.
Our society wears certain masks of power in the world condition. Each of us has many masks hidden away in our closet. We become the activist with one mask and we become the breadwinner with another. We are loving and kind with another mask. We wear masks to fit into worlds that do not belong to us. It seems as
if the most important thing in life is to wear a mask that people will accept and not be challenged by. This could be called the celebration of the mediocre.
For me, to speak to you about compassion or love or higher learning, I first must examine your masks. When I work with an apprentice, I find that often you don't know when you are wearing a mask. If you were abused as a child, and there was no one to hear your pain, or give you love, you wear masks to cover who you really are. Before true decisions in your life can be made, you must design your own mask of power that holds the essence and expresses the integrity of your own truth.
Masks and mask making have been sacred throughout history. If you put on the mask of someone else or of a god or goddess figure, suddenly you become someone else. It is a great adventure. It is great fun to play on the stage of life. But it is essential to know what mask you are wearing and to know when you take them off.
To design a mask of power with your partner or your children or your friends helps them to understand you as well as giving insight into relationships. Because of the lack of ceremony in our lives, mask making has become to many people like child's play. But to discover the hidden selves within you is to grow profoundly.

It is now that the West has a possibility of opening up a new gateway. We can enter through that door of peace and heightened awareness if we avail ourselves of the education we need to surround us with truth and to move us out of polarity in our thinking and into the true Face of Power that is at your essence. Being able to enter that gateway is about having a broader view by dropping the need for polarity in our thought processes. Masks of Power that you can make and wear and enjoy and share are here for you.
The Jaguar Mask
"Jaguar Woman held up the mask for all to see. It was like an egg floating above us or like the moon. She went around the circle, beginning with Agnes, and each woman touched it for a moment. I felt honored to have been able to carry it even for a few hours. I was the last to place my hands on the jaguar mask. I saw it now
as a radiant, shining globe bestowing protection. A strange blue light crept up my arm, and my entire being felt whole. I took my hands away hesitantly and felt a twinge of sadness."

I remember when I touched the Jaguar Mask it felt like it was moving in my hands. Even though I really was not supposed to stare at it or put it on, I couldn't resist. The mask seemed to be crying to me, seducing me, enticing me to put her over my face and I did give in to her temptations. Just for a moment, I placed the mask over my face and the jaguar spirit took me over! The mask of power came alive and we were one. Gateways opened and new worlds inundated my consciousness as I lifted up into a new frequency and fields of radiant pure light.
The Jaguar is a very powerful symbol in the jungles of South America. Like the jaguar temples of the ancient Maya, this sacred animal spirit symbolizes power throughout history. Jaguar is the power of remembering all the trails even those it may not have traveled. Unlike the wolf who journeys down all the trails, jaguar knows the trails without having the experience of the journey.
The Sisterhood's Jaguar mask is a trickster mask of the Heyoka Woman of Power. It is the mask of the False Face Healer. People often ask me what I mean by the false face. They wonder if it is indicative of an untruth or a counterfeit persona. Being a heyoka mask, the false face means just the opposite of what it implies. In truth, the false face is your face of power, the face that stands behind the everyday mask you present to the outer world.
The false face is the inner face of power and it can be a trickster face that leads you off into another direction and will then come up behind you in surprise. People often need to be tricked in order to be healed. We need to be tricked out of standing rigid in our beliefs so we can learn how to tear down the fences we place around our consciousness. The False Face Healer is like the Jaguar who leads you down trails that are unknown to you and into new ways of seeing and experiencing your life. In counting coup upon you, the False Face Healer reveals you and holds up a mirror of teaching and healing for you to reflect upon.
Who are you as you walk your path of heart in the new millennium? Are you ready to face the challenges of this new eon of time, fraught with much upheaval and transformation? Will you stand strong and true to your spiritual essence during this

30 - Courage - North
Action takes courage. We often feel like fish out of water, separate and different from the world around us. Fish out of water can learn to swim in a new air of consciousness with a new purpose in life. Perhaps it is identification with objects and clinging to addictions that keeps you feeling separate and keeps you from finding the source of your power: not only dependence on drugs, sex, or alcohol but also addictions like fear of failure, the need for approval, or fear of desertion. Discover your own power and meaning by having the courage to give up your addictions. Then live your power with courage.
The painting by Rob Schouten is entitled Where Heart and Spirit Travel. It portrays an idea beyond what we usually experience. The two fish swimming out of water through a forest are symbols of the transcendent spirit. They could be your transcendent spirit moving down the path toward the high Himalayas in the distance, toward higher consciousness. It takes courage to walk this path, to go beyond the boundaries of your ideas and imagination. Do not be limited by your belief systems.
Courage is a teaching of the north and a teaching of spirit on the path to power.
