Astrologer's Notes:
LEVEL and Vocational Profiling
by Noel Tyl
Each vocational profile we create ideally establishes the area, the arena in which an individual can best be fulfilled vocationally. But what one does for a living in any work channel is open to a broad spectrum of potentials. For "food management," for example, we have a range from supermarket server to farmer to dietician , butcher to maitre d', to diet guru and many jobs in between. For "helping others," we have therapists of all kinds, alternative healing specialists, psychics and astrologers, day-care companions, workers with the elderly, teachers and many jobs in between and beyond.

We need to recognize that not every vocational profile can be fulfilled just because we see it in the horoscope, at some glamorous, highly professional level. The desire for the fulfillment will be present but much must come into play during development to make intent, potential, and hope a reality … at one level or another.

This concept of level begins with parental leadership; parents supporting children's individual interests potentials. Then vision, hoping, and projecting come into play. Then education takes over to clarify projections and support planning efforts. Then opportunities to show our stuff, to test us and our resolve must be present, and then reward must confirm that we have indeed fit the bill! These are the stepping stones in social development that define Level.

For constructing the chart: August 2, 1989 at 2:02 PM EET in Johannesburg SAFR. Ascendant is 22 Sagittarius 27.]

A legal counselor in South Africa, working in the prison system, sent me this young man's birth data and a plea for help: "This boy has no way of ever getting anywhere in his life, no positive parenting, no role modeling." This statement in the counselor's communication to me clearly established the boy's Level. His potential would be dramatically curtailed by no parental leadership, no supportive behavioral modeling in the early home, aborted or distorted vision, meager/interrupted education (Note Sun, ruler of the 9th, squared by Pluto). And to date, he has been challenged and rewarded by society to the extent that he is in prison as a juvenile offender.

This boy will be released soon; what job-area chance does he have … doing what?

Now, in this case, the astrologer must focus analysis with respect to a poor level. -Here is the astrological profiling -as we have been learning and practicing it here for the past months-- that guided by communication back to the legal counselor:

1. Mercury rules 10.

2. Mercury is in conjunction with Mars in Leo. This suggests theatrical communication; dramatic statements of "stuff". It will be directed to the public (Mercury rules the 7th; and the considerable Nodal-axis emphasis suggests quite a public thrust).

3. Mercury-Mars are disposited by the Sun, the final dispositor of the horoscope. This stops everything in that 9th House cluster. The horoscope is stamped with a 9th House significance.

4. Back-up: Jupiter, ruler of the Ascendant, carries with it 9th House echoes, and here Jupiter is opposed by Uranus on the AP axis. This is very important signification of the 3rd House, part of the 3-9 polarity, since Uranus rules the 3rd.

STOP.

One can't do more than this without knowing more about the boy's individual proclivities, expressed interests (if any).

This vocational profile so far -under free and open conditions-- would suggest being allied with words, communications, and public orientation; there is the suggestion of publishing, publications (newspaper reporting; eventual commentary; 9th House … and Virgo accentuation through Mercury). There is even a touch of working this way in a spiritually orientated concern (note the Neptune configuration and its trine to the MC).

But we must think "beginning level" for all these things, and I advised the counselor of this emphatically. Everything rested on the concept of dramatic public communications. --It's not as if we were going to see a blazingly talented actor here ready for an Oscar. We are seeing someone who probably begins on the fringes of these things and hopes for eventual further development.

I hoped that that profile would be helpful.

The Answer Very quickly, I received a most enthusiastic note back:

"You are absolutely right, he [the boy] is the lead in a play organized by him, and
he also does all the newsletters for all the prisons." --Pretty emphatic corroboration!

Awareness of Level helped make the analysis practicable, and astrology was able to reinforce this young man's future.

For constructing the chart: November 20, 1984 at 3:58 AM CET in Berchtesgaden GERmany; Ascendant is 19 Libra 47.]

This second case is quite similar: an intermediary for the family of this young European woman asked me what I could see for her vocationally. No other information was offered.

At the outset, it was quite a simple matter to make the following observations, practically a rapid-fire listing, to establish Level for the 20 year old.

1. Dissociation Complex … not tuned in with the flow of life? [Peregrine Sun, possibly conjoined with Saturn, or Saturn is also peregrine] --Yes. This was strongly corroborated; her image was of a disorientated loner.

2. Father taken out of the picture early on? -Yes. He lived in another city away from his family. Worked very hard. Was absent, etc.

3. Education interrupted [Uranus conjoins the 9th House ruler]? --Yes, she never finished high school …(and the sense of point 1 above is expressed throughout the vagabond time that followed leaving school).

4. Maternal influence very strong, trying to make up for father's disengagement? [ Sun on Nodal Axis; Uranus quindecile] --Yes. But the daughter rebelled against it [Uranus involvement].

5. Were drugs involved in the vagabond time? [Neptune=AP] -Don't know; but she was with a bad crowd; struggling musicians.

So the Level lacked parental leadership, modeled vision, education, job opportunity or reward!

The Vocational Profile (using Midheaven Extension Method):

1. Moon rules the MC

2. Moon squares Jupiter in the 3rd House, Jupiter ruling the 3rd House.

3. Moon is sextile Mercury in Sagittarius in the 3rd House. -The focus of communications is forming strongly. Mercury is conjoined by Uranus, introducing the sense of technology, computers. -I am then told that the girl's father is strongly placed within the computer industry.

STOP

The emphasis comes down to the 3rd House, which covers selling, marketing, communications, creative texting, etc.

But to get any job, this lady first needs a certificate of minimal education. While getting that, she would be able to work perhaps in a department store selling perfumes (Neptune with Mercury and Venus; Neptune quintile Ascendant and Moon). She might enjoy very much learning about computers, to be used in sales marketing to the public, perhaps of cosmetics or fashion support items. -I was then told that the mother had often done children's "face paintings" at local fairs and play groups.

Note all the Level considerations affecting the projections here.

That was the best I could do -certainly under most difficult reality circumstances.

***Level is a vitally important, strategic consideration, always. It is essential to bring vocational work realistically to life.
