Alternative Health & Healing: Homeopathy

Homeopathy
for the Outdoors
by C. Senbita Carter
Planning any outdoor adventures? If so, plan to carry along some well-selected homeopathic remedies. Homeopathy is used worldwide. At the turn of the 20th century, in the United States about one out of every four doctors were homeopaths. Homeopathic remedies are inexpensive, do no harm (they are very gentle unless you go out of your way to use them irresponsibly) and it is sustainable medicine. When it comes to health care, learn wise self-care. If you are not familiar, the remedies come in small amber glass vials or in small plastic tubes. Ask for them at your local health food store. To use they simply dissolve under your tongue. Homeopathy has a wide application in many health complaints. But here we want to focus on some outdoor scenarios.

In homeopathy a phrase often used is that "homeopaths treat people, not disease". One of the ways to understand this statement is that when symptoms of dis-ease manifest, your life force will express it in its own unique way. Homeopaths understand the remedies this way as well. Each medicine has its own power…it's own "picture." Some symptoms carry more weight than others, they have more meaning when looked at the whole of what one is experiencing. It is easy to prescribe a remedy when the symptoms someone has are keynotes of a well-known remedy.

A keynote is a fundamental fact or idea of a remedy. The plant Aconite is a poisonous plant. Prepared homeopathically, it becomes a safe medicinal, used above the 3rd potency. For example some of the keynotes of Aconite are suddenness, symptoms manifest with great intensity, after exposure to cold, dry wind. One may need this remedy if they were exposed to a cold, dry wind and all of sudden that night you're not feeling well and the other symptoms match. There are remedies that are useful if you become sick because you were out in the sun, or sitting on the cold ground, or in the cold air conditioner and come outside into hot air.

Exploring the outdoors can also bring more chances to rub against poison ivy, a bee to poke a stinger in you, a heat rash, a sun headache or heat exhaustion. And of course if you are out in the woods you have to dress sensibly which means wearing cotton socks with your sneakers or sandals, wearing long sleeves and checking your body for ticks. Remember to carry tweezers with you in your first aid kit. Tweezers are not advised for removing the stingers of bees and wasps, best used for tick removal.

Many minor problems can be dealt with on your own when you have adequate knowledge of homeopathic remedies and their application in acute conditions. Prepare ahead of time by constructing a first aid kit. Conditions of a more serious and/or chronic nature are outside of the scope of self-care and are best handled by a health practitioner of your choice. Homeopathic remedies work best when the indications of the remedy are similar to what you are experiencing. There are a number of remedies that may cover the complaint you present with. How do you find the one you need? There are often other indications that go along with your complaint. Identifying those differences will aid you to find the best remedy. It's a long conversation to explain all of this. I will attempt to cover more in each column.

The full range of (known) remedies for a particular ailment or symptom would be located in a homeopathic repertory, for instance, one of the popular repertories lists 19 remedies for motion sickness. Here I list three, which are most commonly indicated.

Motion Sickness - is defined as sweating, dizziness, pallor and nausea, sometimes leading to vomiting, while traveling by car, bus, train, ship or airplane. Have available a few of these remedies.

Cocculus indicus

The senses are affected, very sensitive state often bought on when the nervous system becomes deranged from too little sleep. There may be a sensation of hollowness or empty headed feeling, there may be a sense of lightness in the body. There may be nausea present with vertigo. Irritability, sensitive to noise, sensitive to touch and worse from movement. Feels worse in the evening and at night.

Petroleum

Irritability, anger, dizziness on rising, worse from motion of cars, ships. Ailments are worse before or during a thunderstorm. Skin is often cracked or dry, worse in the wintertime. May have sweaty feet. Emotional state is one of sadness or melancholy.

Tabacum

Nerves. Cerebro-spinal. Prostration, the limbs are icy cold. The pains are worse heat. Faintness; tremors, indifference, confusion and mental fatigue. There is often excessive vertigo, often with copious sweat. Worse least motion. Spitting often accompanies complaints. Deathly nausea and violent vomiting. Sudden cold sweats with chills. The nausea, faintness and weakness have sometimes found relief in cold air and by eating sour apples. There may be a desire or aversion to tobacco.

Poison Ivy - The rash is an allergic contact dermatitis caused by contact with the oil inside the plant known as urushiol. Urushiol is found in the sap of poisonous plants like poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac. Common reaction is severe itching, redness, and swelling, followed by blisters.

Anacardium

All of your scratching just makes it worse, but you do it anyway. This is also known as 'voluptuous' itching. The more you scratch, the more you itch. The itching is better from hot water. Fatigue and weariness when walking. You feel better from eating and taking a hot bath.

Croton Tiglium

Intense itching of skin, but the skin is so tender it is unbearable to scratch. Better with gentle rubbing.

Grindelia Robusta

Rash appears over the face, neck and often the whole body with severe burning and itching. Inability to lie down. May be difficulty breathing, especially on falling asleep.
Used as a tincture (diluted) or infusion for insect bites.

Insect Stings

Arnica montana - A premier trauma and wound remedy. Arnica preparations should not be applied to broken skin. General indications are when the person feels worse at rest and better walking around. Will often say they are ok, and refuse assistance, although any onlooker could see they were injured and in need of some help. Fear of being touched. Indifferent to his condition.

Hypericum perforatum (St. John's Wort) - injuries to parts rich in nerves, such as fingers or toes. Piercing wounds. The pain experienced may be out of proportion to the injury received.

Ledum palustre (Marsh Tea) - puncture wounds, stings of insects especially mosquitoes. Long remaining discoloration after wounds. May feel chilled yet does not desire warmth. These people tend to be cold all the time, and feel relief from cold applications (ice packs, cold bathing).

Urtica Urens (Common Stinging Nettle) - violent itching, a rash is often present.

Sunburn

Protect yourself from too much sun by limiting your exposure. Don't gaze directly at the sun. Wear a light hat. Use an umbrella. Use sunscreen. Drink plenty of water. Knowing you had too much sun often comes after the fact. Red skin, skin hot to the touch, with soreness and tenderness are common symptoms. Sunburn is considered to be a first-degree burn when accompanied by fever, chills, nausea or dehydration.

Aconite - Sunstroke, especially from sleeping in the sun. Pain in the head, over sensitiveness of the eyes. Suddenness. Aversion to light. Fear, anxiety, restlessness, fear of approaching death, even predicting the time. Fever, one cheek may be red and hot, while the other is pale.

Belladonna - affects the nerve centers, capillaries, eyes, mouth, throat and right side of the body. Main indications are redness and throbbing. Generally worse in the afternoon at 3pm. Oversensitive and overexcitable. The affected parts feel hot to the touch. Symptoms appear and disappear suddenly.

Gelsemium - for general depression from the heat of the sun or summer weather. Lack of muscular coordination. Muscles sore and achy. The eyelids feel heavy, it is hard to keep them open. A general feeling of drowsiness, dullness and dizziness is often present.

Taking the Remedy

For more information on potency and dosage I suggest you refer to a qualified practitioner and purchase a few good books on the topic. Homeopathy can be very helpful for self-care, but please refer to a qualified health practitioner or other appropriate source especially if you require further knowledge of your condition and the suitability of self-treatment.

General Guidelines in using the remedies

•Generally remedies are available over the counter in potencies of 30c or less. As there are over 2000+ homeopathic remedies in a variety of potencies it is often not practical for most shops to have a wide selection on hand. Check with a homeopathic pharmacy if you are unable to find the remedy you need locally.

• Use one remedy at a time. Repeat for several doses as needed. If there is no change review the case at hand and select the best indicated remedy.

• Do not eat or drink 15-30 minutes before or after taking a remedy.

•The remedy can be taken "dry", which means, 2-4 pellets under the tongue.

• Or the remedy can be placed in 4 ounces of spring water, stirred and taken as teaspoonful doses.

•Homeopathic remedies are available in low, medium or high potencies. For self care use low to medium potencies, 30c or lower.

•If you have severe symptoms pain etc., seek help.

•Homeopathic remedies are safe and gentle especially when used with proper knowledge.
