The Archetypal Meaning of Events

In previous columns, we've discussed the synchronistic relationship between process and content. Process constitutes the psychodynamics of the birthchart and has to do with the underlying motives, beliefs, and intentions that characterize a persons inner life. Content, on the other hand, is the outcome of psychological functioning, and shows up in a persons lived experience -- relations with people, places, things, and events. In this installment, we will be discussing the astrological significance of events. An event can be defined as a segment of time in which something occurs of a particular quality.
A core principle of astrology is that character produces events consistent with itself. In other words, an event is a significant occurrence, happening, or outcome precisely because it reflects something in the psyche of the experiencer. Very often an event will crystallize an unconscious intention, attitude, or belief, and help to bring it into awareness. This is supported by Jungs concept of synchronicity, which implies that any idea held long enough will attract whatever conditions it needs for its expres-sion.
For example, the physical manifestation of Saturnian energy often comes as obstacles, hindrances, limitations, delays, burdens and a chronic sense of lack. These events may be a direct consequence of an internal attitude of fear, which is- produced by a belief that one is not good enough (adequate) for the accomplishment of some task. The individual, anticipating things will go wrong, tends to experience the very thing he expects -- failure and deprivation. The quality of the event thus becomes a symbol of the attitude from whence it derives its form and energy. This is the key to understanding how astrology works.
To be even more specific in regard to chart outcomes, we have to consider the sign that a planet occupies. This would provide an important clue to the manner in which both the attitude and the event manifest. The sign position of Saturn symbolizes that domain of life through which the mental state of Saturn manifests. Saturn in Pisces might express a sense of inadequacy with regard to conditions of suffering. Anyone who is sick, disabled, addicted, mentally ill, victimized, or in need of charity may constitute a source of anxiety. The person may grow up wanting to rescue someone who is ill, but feel inadequate. A tragic condition may exist that requires selfless, compassionate service; yet, the child is overwhelmed by the enormity of the task. Eventually s/he may overcompensate and become an authority on Piscean matters. If Saturn is in the 12th, perhaps she becomes a head nurse in a hospital that cares for individuals with bone (Saturn) cancer (Pisces). Or she could master a spiritual discipline like meditation, or an artistic discipline like singing -- "she had perfect pitch."
There are countless ways a given combination of planet, sign, and house can manifest. Although it is impossible to know exactly what will happen, whatever does will fit the range of pos-sibilities indicated. Outcomes may be different in detail, but evidence the same or similar quality.
While planets correlate to general types of events, real events are invariably hybrid creatures that partake of more than one archetype. To fully appreciate the significance of an event, one must see it as the summary product of complex interlocking factors as reflected in planetary sign positions, house positions, and aspects.
I know a woman with Moon in Leo in the 5th forming a close, opening quincunx to Saturn in Pisces in the 12th. The Moon will often describe the history and psychological issues of the mother, which the daughter then inherits. In this case, the mother suffered from poor health and depression. She had been verbally abused by her own father, and developed an inferiority complex that seemed directly related to the fathers harsh treatment. The daughter grew up with her depressed mother and grandfather, as her own father had been imprisoned on drug charges. Although the mother continued to suffer from her fathers severe criticism, the daughter enjoyed a close, loving relationship with him.
Feeling guilty that she was preferred by her grandfather over her own mother, and deprived of a nurturing bond with her mother due to the tension of the situation, the native suppressed her dependency needs (Moon) and struggled to be perfectly in control (Saturn) at all times. She did not want to burden her depressed mother and thus she convinced herself that she did not need nurturing; instead, she would be the perfect little child-adult -- perfectly in control of her feelings and emotional needs. By the time she reached her early twenties, she was a full-blown anorexic, depriving herself of food (Moon/nurturing) and determined to sustain a perfect figure (5th house appearance) at all costs.
It took years of therapy before she was able resolve her guilt and begin to give herself permission to need love. In typical Saturn fashion, she later became a professional therapist who specialized in working with adolescent girls (Moon Leo) who suffered from eating disorders. As the sign of Leo correlates to the developmental stage of adolescence, it is fitting that she worked (opening quincunx) with adolescent (Leo) girls (Moon). Her Moon Leo in the 5th was also in evidence in a parallel career she enjoyed as an entertainer -- a singer.
A listing of the key events chronicles the Moon-Saturn quincunx. First, there was the depressed mother who suffered from an abusive father and whose capacity to nurture her daughter was impaired. Next, there was the heroin addicted, drug-dealing father whose imprisonment (Saturn in Pisces in the 12th) was a source of shame to the family (Moon) and deprived the daughter of a healthy male role model. These events were followed by the development of an eating disorder that reflected her need to be perfectly in control (Saturn) of her emotional needs/appetites (Moon). Finally, the native became a therapist who specialized in the treatment of girls who suffer from the very condition that she herself had to heal.
In this example, we can see the evolution of a Moon-Saturn quincunx from childhood through adulthood, from a state of woundedness to a state of relative integration and health. There was no one event that corresponded completely to either the Moon or Saturn; rather the events could only be understood by viewing the aspect as a whole. More importantly, the events unfolded along a Moon-Saturn continuum that ranged from very disturbed to very accomplished.
Table 1 below lists some typical events that correlate to each planet. Again, however, the reader should keep in mind that events are never the product of any one archetype; rather, an event emerges out of the interaction of several archetypes. Each planet adds its own unique quality, yet is but a contributing factor in a collaborative process.

Table 1: Planetary Events
I think of archetypes as strands of meaning out of which the fabric of our lives is woven. Each planetary archetype interweaves with other archetypes until something unique is createda life pattern.
To use another metaphor, events are like still images in a film; they are frames of meaning that are created out of the interactions of various characters. Each planetary archetype is a character that has a potential for certain kinds of action. When these internal characters come together, their various potentialities combine to create an event that reflects the interaction. Yet, the event itself is but a frame in a larger, ongoing story that constitutes a whole life. Like still images of a film, each event has its own integrity and quality but is merely a portion of an unfolding narrative that emerges at a higher level of organization.
