Food for Life©

by Lonny Brown, Ph.D.
"Where there is wildlife, there is likely to be clean air, clean water, diverse vegetation, and healthy soil. Where there is no wildlife, people also may be in jeopardy."

- Project Wild

THE GREAT EXTINCTION

Life on earth is facing an unprecedented disaster: the sudden decimation of its billion-year old genetic heritage. The marvelous diversity of the natural world is about to be lost forever. If we don't act soon, there will be no more bears, peregrine falcon, sea otters, tigers, panthers, apes, elephants, rhinos, wolves, whooping cranes, eagles, owls, tortoises, frogs, spiders, whales, dolphin, hummingbirds, giraffe..

The causes of animal and plant extinction are all manmade and should be curtailed: natural habitat destruction for commercial exploitation of trees, land, water and mineral resources; industrial pollution, introduced species, and hunting for sport and animal by-products.

There are over 1000 declared endangered animal species in the world. Defenders of Wildlife says 3700 more are legitimate candidates. Worldwide, up to 6000 life forms are driven to extinction every year.

WE NEED THE ANIMALS

Biological diversity on earth is vital to the complex web of life that feeds us and keeps the environment healthy. From bacteria to insects, to the birds and beasts, the animals are the environment's house cleaners and soil conditioners. Species diversity also keeps pest infestations in check. And who knows how many endangered species could help mankind in biomedicine, agriculture, design science, and even communication and psychology?

Protecting nature from man is a complex challenge. We must find a healthy balance between human needs and natural environments. What is required? Establishment of wildlife preserves; enforced bans on sport killing and wild animal products; aid to indigenous cultures; population control; environmental education; equitable global food distribution.

ENDANGERED SPECIES PERSONAL ACTION CHOICES

> Help fight the illegal, immoral traffic in live animals and ivory, fur, and skin. Never purchase clothing, jewelry, or souvenirs made from wild animal products. Don't get exotic pets.

> Support wilderness protection and sustainable development programs.

> Take wild-animal viewing eco-tours that create incentives to preserve the species.

> Be hospitable to local birds and animals. Supply bird and bat houses, and feeders. Create natural brush thickets as micro-ecosystems for small wild animals and insects.

> Promote national and international species protection policies. Tell your government representatives to enforce conservation laws and environmental treaties.
