America's Current Station
in the
Evolution of Humanity
Are We Stuck,
or Are We Moving Forward?

by Jacquelyn Small

I know that sometimes, like me, you must ask yourself, "Am I on the right planet?" So often I am reminded of how much of a misfit I am, not even being interested in what so many "normal Americans" find worthy of their time. There is so much conflict, narrow-mindedness, and human suffering here. And we all know that respect for each other and acceptance of each other's differences -- cultural, personal, spiritual - is how be bring love and peace to this world. We also realize that this is such a beautiful planet upon which to live. So why do we have to make it so hard?

Many years ago, I had a spiritual teacher who told me in Tarot language where we are stuck on our journey to love, at least, here in the United States. Lately, I am struck by how accurate he was. I'd like to share these insights with you now to hopefully offer at least a semblance of understanding to our personal and archetypal plight. Remember, we can never separate from our archetypal roots any more than we can separate from the organs of our bodies, as said by Carl Jung. So all this information pertains to each of us personally.

THE HANGED MAN.
The Major Arcana of the Tarot deck are the 22 trumps that out-picture our archetypal human ways. The Hanged Man is the 12th trump, followed by the Death card, then by the trump called Temperance. These three stations on the path represent the stage of initiation where we are to reverse a polarity, required to die to our old ways and turn ourselves in a whole new direction. Where we've been looking to the outer life to give us our fulfillment, we now must plant our feet in heaven and turn toward the inner life of our Higher Self for our guidance. In many renditions of the Hanged Man, his head is actually planted under the ground, as a tree rooted in the earth. Earth's wisdom is pouring directly into his head, with his feet in the heavens. He is to once again regain the dimension of "depth." The Hanged Man is an archetype ruled by Neptune and the element Water. This can be seen as representing humanity's emotional nature, and the addictions and imbalances we contain in our emotional bodies that create so much pain and harm to ourselves and others.

He looks as though he's dancing a jig, now free of the old ways and having gained a new equilibrium. But he's had to face his own death in order to find this new center. If he survives he emerges as one reborn. There is a rupture of continuity between these two worlds we must somehow learn to transcend by dying to the materialistic world to gain access into the new spiritual dimension. And since, in this mundane world we no longer have initiatory rites to assist us, there will be an arduous process of self-imposed, almost superhuman tasks that must be performed by we mortals to make it through. Like the Hanged Man, we have been disconnected from our roots and therefore must descend, to reconnect with our origins and to our earthly human nature, in order to ascend. Like a tree, our roots must go deeper into the earth to support the growth at the top. This is a crucifixion that Fate can bring about at any time in our lives.

The Hanged Man is the 12th Major Arcana card, the number that symbolizes the kind of time that is beyond ordinary mental manipulations -- the zodiac and other superhuman dimensions operate through this number of completion. Four times three connects the Holy Trinity with the four elements of earth life. When this archetype is present in your life, it will mean some sort of sacrifice is required -- physically, emotionally, mentally, or all three! But remember: It is simply our consent, or surrender, to allow this sacrifice to happen that is required. We "give up the ghost" as Jesus modeled for us on the cross and "commend our spirit" to take us to a life upon a wider plane.

Since all transformation in our global world must begin with each of us, you might ask youself: Is there some behavior, mode of living, attitude, or emotionalism in my life that I am now required to relinquish or heal? If so, you will know that the Hanged Man is speaking directly to you.

DEATH. Then, it should be no surprise that the Hanged Man is followed by Card Number 13, called Death. This archetype is ruled by Scorpio. Now that we've turned away from the ego-centered life, to which we can never return with ease, we live "from the inside out," and so must come to terms with the Grim Reaper who is always removing dead forms to make room for the new. Death is the symbol for dismemberment, sleep and forgetting. It is usually unconscious reactions, rigid projections, and glamorous illusions to which we must die. We are facing the "bare bones" of reality.

You will see sprouts of new life symbolized in some way on every Death card. Death is birth. Birth is death. But when Death is "up" in our psyches, we indeed do feel scattered all to pieces. Between the dying of the old and the taking on of the new lies a period of deep mourning. But fortunately, there are eternal basic truths, having come down from our ancestry, that live "in our bones." The scythe that Death usually carries represents Saturn, the god of time. And it's shaped like the moon, the lunar mysteries, representing all that we've passed through that must be relinquished, once understood and integrated.

The number 13 accompanies this archetype, not by chance; it's a number that intrudes into the orderliness of our timing devices such as clocks and the precision of zodiacal roundness. We experience this number as a betrayal. But look at the two numbers that make a thirteen: a one and a two. This gives us a hint of the power of this number. It is associated with The Christ, who stood in the center of his twelve disciples to close out His life with them at the time of the Holy Eucharist.

So how do we ever prepare for this unwanted guest? There's an ancient maxim: "Death is certain. Let us forget it." This gives us the clue. By wasting time during life in trying to avoid death, we betray ourselves by not entering fully into life. To accept the fact that we perish in the world of Time is to achieve victory over Time. Though Death is impersonal and strikes us all as a universal fact, this moment of truth will always be an individual experience; we each must face our deaths alone. We must learn that Death is not a one-time irrevocable moment in life; it is a continuous process. Whether conscious of it or not, we are always in the process of dying to the old to make room for the new. Plato said "True philosophers make dying their profession." Once we die to a way of being, there is no turning back. We are now a stranger in that land, an exile no longer at ease in the old world. Like the Fool, we take up our knapsack and move on.

If something's over in your life and you are still holding on to it, the Grim Reaper may be alive and well in your psyche right now, urging you to move on. It is the end of a relationship or part of your life as you've known it. Something has crystalized and now needs to be dissolved. The Death archetype is the surgeon in the cosmic hospital; something needs to be removed. Death is always about transformation.

TEMPERANCE. If we are willing to die to whatever "old" may be holding us back, the archetype of Temperance comes forth as the 14th Card, and falls under the sign of Sagittarius. This archetype is an Alchemist of the highest order, an Angel guarding our cosmic memory, the connection between the great yesterday and tomorrow of the human soul. The angelic task here is to perfectly blend the tinctures of the past with the waters of the new dispensation coming straight from our Source. Through Temperance we let loose of the old bonds and re-create a new vessel through which Spirit can come forth. We learn to intermingle spirit and flesh, the conscious with the unconscious, the yang and the yin, the old with the new. We, the human, must step out of the way now and let the Angel perform the alchemical task of blending Spirit with our human ways. Angels are "God's ideas."

When Temperance is alive in our psyches, we reconcile our numinous dreams with our practical human existence. We learn to hone our talents and our skills, to temper our character as we would the blade of a sword to better befit the Great Work of transformation. We temper steel to make it strong and more resilient. We learn to guide our passions and release judgment. When Temperance appears some moderation is being asked of you, some ways to better bridge the two worlds. When in planetary work, it will imply that one is learning to bring some part of the Ancient Wisdom into modern-day form, helping to unfold the divine Plan.

And God knows, our world is crying out now for more willingness to bring the ways of Spirit into our human ways. It is easy to see this is where the United States of America is stuck in its archetypal process of maturation. Am I ready to undergo this potent Initiation of "let go and let God" in my own little life? Are you? Can America relinquish its materialistic drives for power and greed and learn to come from the heart? Hopefully, we can all support each other in this essential "trial by fire" starting us in the face today as vital to our continuance on this bountiful planet Earth.
