In Practice: How to Create a Successful Holistic Practice from Start to Success!

Esteem
Self-Esteem, Creative Artists
and Family Traditions

by Shaun Brown
Self-Esteem is talked about a lot lately but just what does that mean? We will discuss the foundation of your psyche and how to make it healthier so that you step into life having worth. Remember we talk without speaking because, like in the physics String Theory everything is a vibration.

ESTEEM-High estimation or value; great regard; favorable opinion, founded on supposed worth. Dictionary.com

I hope by hearing about my experiences you can take them in and learn from them and what they have to offer. I refuse to be a starving artist; it starts with removing old survival tapes and hanging out with winners. You grow as fast as the people you surround yourself with.

Most creative people have a gift but have low self-esteem because in this world, if you are a creative person, you aren’t valued as much. So even though you have a “gift,” often right brain people lack the coaching and direction to take that “gift” to a successful level.

Staying stuck in low self-esteem is a familiar defense but doesn’t represent the roll model/leader that we can become setting a healthy example for the artists in the future. It is your responsibility to raise the bar and dash the myth that to be a creative type you must be poor-I say balderdash!

Sloth: Aversion to work or exertion; laziness; indolence. Dictionary.com

When it comes to creating self-care, and discipline SLOTH is the biggest wall we push up against. It seems to me that no matter what road you go down, what keeps you stuck in familiar agony is Slothfulness. Slothful behaviors are: slacking off just when you are almost finished with something, being hesitant, fear of moving forward, sabotage, or insisting that the Universe do it your way. That last one will always cement a non-moving forward motion.

If you are finding yourself stuck in the muck may I suggest taking your saboteur out to dinner and challenge why you have the belief system that will not let you resonate with success. No need to say anymore.

Artists’ And Low Self Esteem

I am an artist, much to the chagrin of my parents and other biological members of my family. It took a long time to own my Life purpose, that of being an artist. The general unspoken term I was given and tried to function under for most of my life was black sheep, “the fuck-up,” or in softer terms the “odd” one. As I matured, I started seeing that those terms related to a lot of people that expressed themselves in the same way I did. They were individuals that just had to do things differently than the general population. In Medieval days it was suggested that you stay with the dominant population norm for “survival” or you might be singled out and made an example of. Not a lot has changed on this planet.

Most of these types are creative people, and given a fair climate to create, they become valuable assets to our society. They are the ones that give a new refreshing, or different slant on the view in our fish bowl. Once I took the responsibility of becoming a Spiritual Adult I was able to remove the old shame-based family title with a legitimate one: Artist/Creative Type. Does this ring a bell?

My job is to explore, risk, and generally go beyond the “box” of known experience while being of Service. I am always trying new colors, clothing, foods, feelings, and thoughts. I create without asking permission, or seeking approval. That behavior is sometimes scary to non-artists, those are the ones that feel safer in the crowd and function best in the “survival” mentality.

The artist can be viewed as being an upstart, the one that is always too sensitive-I call this being in touch. When I meditate daily, and have a connection with the Universe, that knowing gives me permission to take risks, to try new things, explore and express something that no one else has done. This is not out of showiness but out of a yearning to create, to bring change to give a different perspective about this thing we call Life.

Being an artist is bringing the “texture” out in life and being the one who says the king doesn’t have any clothes on. The voice of Truth exposes the shallow side and enriches our lives with that texture. The artist gives permission for the rest of the crowd to find perimeters inside the circumference of the artist’s infinite circle. They help the rest of the world define their world by sharing so many different views. The artist breaks ground and the rest of society finds a comfortable place to build a median foundation. So be proud that you are a creative type-print it on your checks next to your name.

This condition of needing to create is an urging, not necessarily a conscious choice. Yes we choose to do or not do a certain project or creation, but the artist must create something, and usually cannot not express that inner need unless it is an outward gesture, like a flower that must bloom. They also can’t seem to stay in the flowerpot. They don’t color inside the lines and are looked upon as strange by the general population. These risky and non-conforming renegades, what’s gotten into them? “The artist is the shaman of the time,” as Joseph Campbell would say. The one who records the history of the time, like the cave paintings in France.

We come in all forms: painters, writers, creative minds that invent and express new ideas such as Gloria Steinhem and Albert Einstein. An artist doesn’t determine if they are going to be recognized as great to society; that is measured by the tribe in terms of money and fame, they just do what they do, whether that creation is acknowledged or not. They don’t care what others think, and sometimes, well most times, they are not recognized in their lifetime as anything but just off “normal.”

Living off normal is an illusion folks because when the shit hits the fan I mean REALLY hits the fan, who do the masses turn too? Yes, the ones that live outside the box and changes to them are the norm. Their psyche is comfortable with constant change so they become the creative grounded ones ahead of their time. And because creative types know they are connected to Universal Forces they have compassion and understanding and an instant response to be of Service under duress.

Society does not value a person with the traits of an artist they are not a good investment for the good of the whole, the survival of the tribe. Yet in times of crisis they are usually the leaders, the REAL leaders who are sought out for their advice or direction. Once an artist has gone through the depths of despair about who they are and who they are not they have developed their own self worth from within. They are not frayed by True insight as the general masses, who have tried hard to stay on the median. In troubled waters, the artist usually navigates the waters quite nicely.

The artist is not always self realized and can have a hard time accepting their talent. Sometimes they go down in flames, not seeing what impact the expression of their life has made on the population. But the mark they have left for us all is the permission to move forward in a better, freer, more illustrated Universe, and we all benefit from them. Artists are people, who live on the fringe of the outside of the box. We are the Heart and Soul of the Human Race. God Bless us.

If you are willing and able to change your life, influence the lives of those around you, and make the world a better place, then you must set the intent to be successful. As a high-self esteem creative type you are an attractive, incredibly beautiful creature, and so full of Power! Do you know this? The Angels are waiting for you to pick up the phone and start raising your own self-esteem (Meditate-Pray). When you become Powerful within it’s between you and the Universe and that contract states that all of your needs will be met. If you don’t have all of these beliefs down, start now and review meditation, also review the abundance section about giving.

I write my successful and not so successful experiences to share with you because I believe in my mission, which is to be of Service. I believe that the world will really be a better place if I can, in some way help new and on-going professionals become successful. This way they can reach more people, and they can in turn reach more people, engaging the ripple effect.

Why? Because it feels good! If you are letting the Universe direct where you need to be going and you will know this by your gut, and the Inner breath work is being done, all that is needed now is your mantra. It can look something like this …

My Mantra

“I have more money than I can spend
and all of my needs are met; I am healthy and willing to humbly Serve.”

Post this! Repeat this mantra in meditation, at the store, in traffic, say this mantra, and mean it! Just get out of the way and let the Universe direct how that is going to look. Our biggest fear is that it is not going to look the way we think it “should.” Say this mantra continuously for three months and your life will change for the better-promise.

Family Tradition

How was Self-Esteem perceived in your family system? Were you half-full or half-empty? If the belief was half empty, there is not enough and you’re not enough, you will probably carry on the same traditional family belief system, low self-esteem, unless you choose to change that belief.

For more in depth inner work “do” Suze Orman’s “Nine Steps To Financial Freedom-Workbook.” I will talk about this in depth at the end of this column. Sometimes as an artist we have to look at and remove those old tapes that no longer serve us and this workbook will get you there.

Separating from the tribe and being willing to receive guidance from the Universe can be real scary. This is where Life becomes really fun. I am pretty sure that in most families you won’t find people jumping up and down about the “new” you. We don’t like change, however, you are the one being called to change your perceptions. You are being asked to raise your consciousness and by doing that it raises the Consciousness of the whole system; all generations past. Big responsibility, and you are the Chosen One!

This request has probably been placed upon you because you have used the stepping-stones of Wisdom and Courage from each generation. As feeble as it sometimes has apeared, you are ready to come to this place of changing beliefs for the better of the whole. The Spiritual Warrior! You are probably the first recognized creative type of your kind in the family. Second generation at the most. Don’t worry if rose pedals aren’t laid at your feet from gaining this realization, no matter what name you call yourself most family members won’t get it anyway- that’s ok, move forward. Congratulations!

I accepted this challenge as a Spiritual Warrior and left my Family ALONE. I didn’t try to convince them that changing my belief system was a good move because they hadn’t chosen to get out of the survival mode themselves. When reaching this apex, I would say if it doesn’t feel uncomfortable when choosing the passionate artist path, then you aren’t emotionally invested enough in the shift from survival to Spiritual Adult. Risk taking is required. You will find the courage to do this as you do your Inner work with Meditation. Your Mentor or Hypnotherapist needs to be on retainer too. How can you expect the Universe to give to you when you are not risking enough to receive change?

The Money Mentor

There is a great intense Mentor who was paramount in my Abundance growth. I have had to do the footwork and have asked the hard questions that were asked in financial planner, Suze Ormans’ workbook, Nine Steps To Financial Freedom. Today I am debt free. I owe my changed perceptions and how to manifest Money/Abundance to her. Suze lectures on public TV and she has a web site (suzeorman.com), go visit. Her focus is how to change your belief system, if you’re in debt. How to become financially free. Money is a Spiritual journey believe it or not, just like everything else.

I happened to be watching her program at a time when I was so financially distraught that I was thinking about suicide. As a single parent, my son and I had “survived” the last five years living on credit cards. Without the knowledge that I have today, I would do that same thing again in a heartbeat. I learned later that living and thinking in the survival mode was how I had arrived at that state in the first place.

Her program started making sense and I started to listen. Who says there are no miracles! She said that just because you don’t handle money well doesn’t mean that it needs to be shame-based. All it means is that you were not taught how to handle money successfully. Well, talk about getting my attention. I bought her tapes and workbook, and by the way you must do the workbook, and I did the suggestions. Answering emotionally charged questions, like what was your first memory of money- it was difficult and uncomfortable.

You must go into your gut, and address the thing that keeps you poor, and dig it out. Just listening to her tapes is like watching someone eat a bowl of ice cream; unless you personally experience the suggested writing yourself it will not go deep enough to permanently change your life, like actually tasting the deepest, richest, gooeyest chocolate truffle kind.

Even though I came from the dynamic of lack, today, I am debt free. I do my Inner work, go to therapy when called for, check my motives, I honor my time and others, and get paid for it. I am now willing to receive, and continue to work on myself with lots of help. I have more Money, Power (because it is used for the good) and Abundance than ever before. It just keeps getting better folks, I promise.

I am a giver, and I know that I am employed by the Universe, as we all are. I am learning to let go of expectations. It is funny when you really get to the point of letting go of the old beliefs that are not working, how wonderful the Universe can orchestrate your life for you!

I hope you know how important you are to us all. Make sure that you give to yourself and love yourself like the most loving mother and father. It becomes quite a ride so unfasten your seat belt all of you creative types!
