Spiritual Mastery for the 21st Century

To Walk in The Shoes of The Masters

by Dr. Gwen MacGregor
"The prototype for aspirants to divine Wisdom, Abraham, first had to descend into 'Egypt' (the material world of ego, desire, ambition), probing the depths of worldly experience before scaling the Tree of Life. There he preserved himself from being seduced by those bright essences and after testing himself, he returned to his place: He went up from Egypt, literally, strengthened and confirmed in faith and reached the highest grade of faith."

Perle Epstein

At this time, we repeat a past lesson of humanity, one that corresponds to the "lean time" of the year when we ask ourselves how best to articulate the wisdoms we have gathered in hibernation this very long winter? In ancient days, prophets and students of mysticism were sent out into the wilderness to become lean, mean wisdom machines! Abraham, Moses, David, John the Baptist and Jesus, to name a few, were all cast into the desert and some, like Moses and John, actually spent most of their lives exiled there. Moses only went up into the mountains after he had mastered the lesser yearnings and lessons of the ego.

Ishmael, son of Abraham, brother of Isaac and ancestor to Mohammed was cast into the desert with his Mother, Hagar, in his innocence. Some believe it was cruel punishment to send the mother and child out into the wasteland to wander but, God instructed Abraham to do so, for from it would blossom seeds of a new way of worshipping the Creator. Many see the seeds of discontent between the families as still apparent in the violence and tension of the Middle East. Where else should such friction exist if not in the desert? Obviously, not all students of the wisdom path see that every road leads to the Divine. Once again, the original lesson of Cain and Abel, the Illuminated and the Shadow selves are re-created again and again as lesson plans for us. How interesting then when we consider that so many Americans and their allies are even now, fighting in the desert in Iraq?

Of course, there are two special students of the divine, desert obstacle course who come to us from the ancient Hebraic tradition and are celebrated at this season every year by millions around the world. Probably the world's best known Hermit (and we speak not of Howard Hughes here!), was John the Baptist. Like the Hermit Card of the tarot, John walked the wasteland of humanity searching for higher truth and a way to clean the souls of men. We hear of many such mythically heroic journeys taking place in 40 days or 40 years, never forgetting that 4 is the number of the Earth-Man or earth vibration. John's water-bound counterpart, Noah, sailed on the Passion of God's seas for 40 days in search of the new and everlasting innocence or Path to Eden or the New Jerusalem, as well.

In this Lenten period before Mother Earth re-awakens Her generous fertility, we will be casting away our larvae stage for butterfly wings and hopefully feeling at the end of our 40 days of cleansing as if we have turned ourselves inside out. It was John's task to encourage his people to want to walk the pathways of light in his time. He helped them with their struggles through the ceremonies of baptism and eternal cleansing. He knew that his brother-in-light to come, Jesus, would show them why this period of ego-fasting was so important to their immortal souls. Let us discuss the best way to individually take advantage of this Lenten or fasting period, so that we may be ready to sow our seeds of light in the Spring.

It has occurred to me on many occasions that Jehovah, knowing humanity inside and out, reckoned it would take a 40-day cycle to break the back of a bad addiction or habit. He knew that the "winter of the soul," was a perfect time to address our shadow's inclinations by refining our spiritual oneness with our higher self. Hence, the necessity for time spent alone, only looking at our own true reflection. Jesus battled the serpent of desire that rages throughout all of humanity. It took 40 days we are told, for him to find his center of balance and to remember he was spirit moving through form and to quell the earthly insecurities that robbed him of inner peace. It is our time and privilege now to take up the seasonal challenge of cleaning house and facing the serpent with joy in our hearts and wisdom in our minds.

Take these next few weeks of your life to try and focus on the demons that are hounding you as you willingly walk through this desert of your own creation. Many of us in serving others and doing rewarding group work have an edge at this time in negotiating greater self-strength and in having more trust in ourselves and in humanity. As you meditate and purify at this time, seek out the company of others so that more energy and purpose can be brought to bear in your favor. Unbeknownst to you, we all stand in the desert at this time. Like the Masters before us, let's utilize the season properly by letting go of the psychological and physical baggage we no longer need to fortify our false gods within. Feed your bodies and minds with only God's sweetness and rest in the understanding that the New Jerusalem has always been within each of us to discover.

When the soldiers come to point fingers at you in these days of shadowy insecurity and say to you, "Didn’t I see you walking with the Master?" Be prepared with courage to say, "Why yes and may I share with you what I have learned from Him?" Jesus like Moses and Abraham before him does not have to reappear in the body and form of the beloved Master of Nazareth ever again…something many of the Christian faith do not begin to understand. He only has to shine through all of our Higher Selves as we reach out our hands to one another and ascend to His Divine meeting place. Enjoy your own resurrection this year and forevermore. Find peace with the season…

Shalom,
Dr. Gwen MacGregor
