Astrologer's Notes:

Medical Astrology Curriculum:
The Primer

by Noel Tyl

This article begins a series orientating us to so-called “Medical Astrology.”

At the outset, it is important to state that I am not a medical doctor; few of us are in astrology. BUT, astrology has a fascinating ability to portray weaknesses in our body. What we know has been corroborated a zillion times!

In my book, the Astrological timing of Critical Illness, I have submitted a well-researched thesis: places of developmental tension in the horoscope delineated by astrological symbols, rulerships, and aspect networks delineate as well the weak points of our being. In league with the aging process, these weak points show our vulnerabilities for systemic (of the bodily systems) and somatic (of the bodily structure) breakdown.

Within this knowledge that is empirically refined to sharper acuity with every case we see, astrology is able to save lives.

Orientation It is important to have a solid grounding for astrological symbols in physical terms. –This may appear simplistic in presentation to the experienced astrologer, but please note the subtle attachment of psychodynamic dimensions to the medically orientated symbol references. This reciprocal tie becomes the art of medical profiling as we develop our understanding and practice.

From astrology’s earliest times, the Signs and the planets ruling each Sign have been given strong reference to parts of our being. These “meanings” gather refinements continually. [This list is extremely simplified, but it is dynamically useful immediately.]

The Sun/Leo
Life Energy, the Ego –the Heart, the Eyes (with the Moon)

The Moon/Cancer
The reigning Need of the personality; the stomach, the breasts, the Eyes (with the Sun); gastro-intestinal tract.

Mercury/Gemini, Virgo
The mind, communication, idealized discrimination; nerves, lungs, arms and hands; nutrition.

Venus/Libra, Taurus
Sociability, aesthetics, values; throat, thyroid, lower back, kidneys, bladder, pancreas; the hair.

Mars/Aries
Aggression; head, brow region, surgery, adrenaline.

Jupiter/Sagittarius
Education, enthusiasm, largesse; the liver, hips and thighs.

Saturn/Capricorn
Ambition, difficulty; knees, skin, bones, teeth, nails, tumors.

Uranus/Aquarius
Individuation, intensity; the ankles, shock, stroke.

Neptune/Pisces
The mystical, the unknown, aesthetics, the spirit; the blood, the feet, decay; false diagnosis.

Pluto/ Scorpio
Power management, extremism, sex, death; the reproductive system and genitalia.

These correspondences are very easy to learn, and immediately we can see the holistic dynamism they support. For example, if one’s ambition is thwarted (Saturn), possibly involving oppressive authority figures, one will become “weak in the knees;” body structure will develop problems; bones will lose strength, etc.

With social frustration (Venus), we feel “spineless;” we experience anything but sweetness … sugar problems develop systemically; our hair falls out.

With suppression of who we are (Neptune), depression develops, weaknesses mysteriously appear, our system is altered from what it should be.

With nervous anxiety (Mercury), our breathing may become asthmatic; we are a-jangle, scattered, not able to concentrate, indecisive; we can not metabolize nutrition effectively.

These connections between mind and body are intriguing and they can be developed with great nuance beyond this simple initial presentation. These tie-ins develop smoothly as we learn more and more about the body and its systems seen within the guidelines of the individual horoscope.

Additionally, astrology supports dramatically that the Ascendant is the Health Center of the horoscope and the twelfth House is the area of critical illness. –Contrary to too long-lived opinion, research shows over and over again that the 6th House plays almost no role in the emergence and profiling of critical illness.

Examples

General Schwarzkopf has Mars and Pluto in tight conjunction in his 12th House, opposed by the Moon in Capricorn. This configuration clearly promises enormous get-things-done aggression; it also suggests much deep-seated anger, echoed by Saturn-retrograde (father figure anxiety) opposed the Sun (ego). Ruler of his Ascendant (the health center).

Under pressure, frustration, and aging, where will Schwarzkopf’s body develop problems? Inflammation and worse (Mars) of the prostate gland (Pluto), when frustrated, when the ego is denied somehow (the Moon and Sun pressures). Additionally, an arthritic knee condition is suggested (Saturn, Moon debilitated in Capricorn).

Read that through again and understand thoroughly how the horoscope is predicting weakness in those places by virtue of the planetary interplay and positioning.

General Schwarzkopf was denied advancement in rank after the first Iraq war. In enormous frustration (reminiscent, I am sure, of early life furies), he resigned from the military and shortly thereafter developed cancer of the prostate. –The cancer was discovered during an examination about his knee problems.

Search out the tension points in this lady’s horoscope:

Pluto conjoins the Sun: there are heart problems

Neptune conjoins Saturn in Libra, the two square Venus, ruler of Libra, which is in conjunction with Uranus: there are severe lower back problems

Neptune conjoins Saturn, Uranus is quindecile the Moon in Capricorn: there are knee problems.

The Venus-Uranus conjunction in Cancer and the Uranus quindecile to the Moon suggest serious gastro-intestinal problems (Cancer).

This is the beginning way of medical profiling based upon our thesis of the development of distress within the aging process, under the stress of life.

We will develop this further in successive columns, culminating in the management of Solar Arcs and Transits into these natal pressure points to activate them later in life! Anticipating that guideline activity in an individual’s astrology can establish an alert for medical investigation and treatment. Prevention becomes cure. Astrology helps to save lives.
