TNP &
The Natural Intelligence Of Three
[Take A Five Minute Test Below]

A whole is that which has a beginning, middle, and end.
---Aristotle

Good Things In Three

The matrix of symbols that comprises the Tarot Of The Nine Paths (TNP) exemplifies the old saying-- “All good things come in threes.” All archetypal symbols of transformation, in other words, unfold naturally and organically in three stages.

“Three-ness” often is obvious to the point of transparency—we are all accustomed, for example, to the unfolding “pattern of three” when describing the human lifespan (birth ? life ? death), the arrow of time (past ? present ? future), the structure of myth and story (beginning ? middle ? end), the classic “Hegelian dialectic” (thesis? antithesis ? synthesis), or simply the consumption of a French vanilla ice cream cone: initial pleasure contact ? continuation with diminishing exotica ? completion with (or without) satiety. Three-folded-ness comes in the familiar cadence of 1-2-3 X-Y-Z … “Triads,” triplicities, triangles, etc are inherent to processes involving psychological and spiritual transformation much as they operate in most material occurrences involving change.

The Degradation of Three

We have seen this natural intelligence co-opted for public consumption. Popular cinema and commercial television, in particular, have established the new “dumbed-down,” mechanical “predictability” to the process dimension. Rather than propelling one somewhere over the rainbow, or from here to eternity, no one really goes anywhere on television anymore, certainly not in terms of transforming their consciousness; to the contrary, success seems more a return to the good old-fashioned normal neurosis scored dramatically with another notch on the belt.

Spend a week deconstructing the barrage of primetime showings and one is astounded by the dull singularity of the story-telling “production line.” No longer do true mysteries exist, nor mythic structures that actually lead one to real change or transformation. The creation of original and all-possible outcomes (an important cause of TNP) on television is reduce to one exasperating outcome with rare exceptions—the star prevails and Hollywood justice is served. “Homicidal realism,” for instance, currently the vogue of network drama is repeated nightly in a competition for the “sexier,” edgier, “tell-it-like-it-is-ier” pseudo-authenticity. It’s as if cops and robbers and street whores really mattered to us beyond escapism and hormone stimulation. They do not, but this illusion is what gets shelled-out when the desperate human ego (embodied in desperate advertisers, programmers, and producers) target the lowest common denominators of human fascination—lust, greed, fear, and violence—to preach their gospel.

Nothing is left to imagination, literally, not in the commercial formula. A new sort of mental surrogate—market-researched myth production--passes as genuine discovery. Secondary “twists of character” (the Bronx accents, odd day jobs, teenage sex raves, cab drivers with hoop earrings, etc) provide the only texture that separates one “narrative triad” from another. Could real life be so single-mindedly, psychologically not happening? As I see it, the problem is not so much the danger of “self-fulfilling prophesy”—the tendency for life to imitate what passes for “art,” but rather the problem of disinformation and degraded appreciation for the deeper mysteries where, in principle, people’s minds actually expand in potentially revolutionary ways. This is the expressed hope behind the creation of TNP.

Imaginal “Patterns of Three”

Jung noted that in natural imaginative experiences such as dreams, myth, primitive art, magical practices, etc. things that appear in threes typically signal the psyche’s changing growth process. “Patterns of three” invariably progress purposively toward a higher goal of consciousness (‘finality’).

Below is a short “test of recognition” that measures your intuitive understanding of three-stage, triadic relationships constructed entirely from the Tarot’s Major Arcana. The correct answers are listed afterwards, but how they were determined, what they suggest in the bigger picture, how the secret code of TNP is revealed, you must wait for my next column. If you email me your results, I will be glad to send you the rationale behind the test.

Test Your Natural Intelligence
A Five Minute Survey

Instructions: “Triads” are three-staged growth patterns that unfold naturally in transformational processes. In the following triad sets, which pattern makes better “intuitive sense” with respect to each designated principle (in bold)? Note: the “?” indicates “leads to” or “leading to” as in: Expression leads to Discussion leads to Consensus.
