*Wake Up Laughing --
But For Goodness Sakes, Wake Up!
Ask the Swami

Dear Swami:
OK Swami. I’m about ready to give up on ever finding an answer to this question, and you’re my last hope: Why do bad things happen to good people?
Ira Bell,
Ft. Wayne, Indiana
Dear Ira:
I have often puzzled over this and in a recent meditation it came to me like a bolt of enlightening: The reason bad things happen to good people is, God is dyslexic. Consequently, negative things are going to happen, so I say that life is like photography. We use the negative to develop. And I have more good news: Two negatives can make a positive. For example, I know someone who has two serious problems. He is paranoid, and he is dyslexic. But it has worked out perfectly. He believes the world is plotting to make him happy, and there isn’t a thing he can do about it!
Dear Swami:
Condoleezza Rice -- I am fascinated by her, and I realize she never really talks about her personal or spiritual life. Any clues?
Ronnie Gamuck,
Boca Raton, Florida
Dear Ronnie:
If the rumors I’m hearing are true, Condi will soon be coming out with her spiritual autobiography, Women Who Run With the Wolfowitzes.”
Dear Swami:
I’ve been reading your material over the past couple of years, and I’m wondering if I detect a bit of partisanship. You seem to lean a little to the left, and I thought spiritual leaders like yourself need to stay above the fray. Surely you must have something good to say about the Republicans.
Foster B. Reckondwith,
Oceanside, California
Dear Foster:
While it is true that I have criticized our current Administration, I agree with you that we need to come front and center to heal the left / right divide. Hey, just because the right is wrong doesn’t mean the left is right. I appreciate that Republicans honor individual responsibility, and I completely agree with them that the prime cause of welfare mothers is “farewell fathers.” I think all of us -- especially Republicans -- need to listen to Republicans more: Republicans like Lincoln who spoke of “government of, by, and for the people”; like Teddy Roosevelt who urged us to “conserve our natural resources”; like Dwight D. Eisenhower who warned us to “beware of the military-industrial complex.” Maybe if the Banana Republicans in charge now (who seem determined to turn this country into a banana republic rife with militarism, loss of liberties and growing gap between rich and poor) listened more to those Republicans we could end the “ethic cleansing” and heal the truth decay we are suffering from now.

Swami Goes to the Midwest
in his 2005 Heartland Tour
Swami Beyondananda, Cosmic Comic and spiritual leader to millions of FUNdamentalists (accent on "fun") was considering going to the Mid-East this spring, and then thought better of it. He realized he could actually do more good touring the Midwest, particularly after electile dysfunction, truth decay and Deficit Inattention Disorder have caused such disheartenment in the heartland. Swami's tour of America's Heartland will take him from from the left ventricle to the right auricle, back through the inferior vena cava and finally right up the aorta. In other words, he will start in Cleveland, then go to Chicago, Madison and Milwaukee and finally end up in Ann Arbor.
His purpose? To raise the laugh force and create an uprising in laughter so that those of us who want a peaceful, just and sustainable world can overgrow the current system. To that end, Steve and Swami will be working with The Peace Alliance, the organization promoting using a small portion of what we spend on weapons of mass destruction to create a Department of Peace. "If war is a necessary evil," says the Swami, "why not promote peace as a necessary good?"
Yes, we know. It sounds logical. But since logic hasn't worked in the past, maybe comedy will work now. We have nothing to lose but our seriousness, and humorologists tell us that most of our serious problems are rooted in seriousness. So if you live in any of these cities -- or know people who do -- please pass the word. If you know people who love to laugh, or people who need to, we guarantee the Swami will keep 'em laughing till the sacred cows come home.

Swami
Beyondananda,
|
 |
Swami Beyondananda is the alter ego of author, comedian and teacher Steve Bhaerman.
In his previous life, Steve has been an educator, author and publisher. The co-founder of an alternative high school in Washington, D.C., Steve is the author of No Particular Place to Go: Making of a Free High School (Simon & Schuster, 1972) and Friends and Lovers: How to Meet the People You Want to Meet (Writer's Digest Books, 1986).
He was an adjunct professor at Wayne State University and University of Michigan, and published his own magazine in southeastern Michigan, Pathways.
For the past 16 years, he has been writing and performing comedy as Swami Beyondananda.
The Swami is author of Driving Your Own Karma, and Duck Soup for the Soul. He is also the founder of the Right-To-Laugh party, and rumor has it he will toss his turban into the ring and launch a run for President this April Fool's Day.
