Coffee, Trains
and Letting Go

by David Ault
Marge grabs the stainless steel coffeepot and begins her systematic round of refills and fresh cup offerings to the various morning patrons who occupy the booths and tables of the urban diner.

"More coffee," she routinely asks?"
Some along her route look up with bifocaled eyes from their morning papers, smile warmly and say, "sure."
Marge aptly obliges.
Others kindly say, "no thanks."
Others with stealth reflexes place their hand over their cup and never even bother looking her way. With the latter two declining her offer, what does Marge do? Does she return behind the counter, clutch the condiment cart with exasperated disdain and embarrassment and internally cry out, " Why? Why don't they want my coffee? I worked so hard to brew it! Don't they know what I went through to even get here today so that I could make the damn stuff!?!" Knowing Marge, I seriously doubt it.

Those who decline Marge's coffee are swiftly forgotten as soon as their decision is made known. Marge doesn't have the time or desire to dwell on their reasons for not wanting her coffee. She doesn't take it personally. She's got too many customers who DO want her coffee and that's where her attention goes. Plus, she knows that once the receptive patrons are satisfied and content, even more will enter her diner domain who, without resistance, want her coffee. Focusing only on the receptive ones, Marge trusts - in fact, knows, that daily, countless others will always want what she has to offer.

Marge is brilliant at manifesting a positive, productive experience. Are you?

How many of us consume so much of our precious energy trying to force, plead, beg and convince others to please validate us by partaking of our metaphoric coffee (i.e. ideas, love, desires, companionship) that we miss out on those who actually do desire it? We're unable to see or hear them because of the deafening roar from the shouts of self-doubt and ego-driven pity that tell us our coffee (our love, our ideas, our worth) must not be good enough.

As much as I aspire to be like Marge, I occasionally find myself wanting to force feed my creations and ideas, love or friendship on those who are not interested, whose desire for my "coffee" is non-existent.

Case in point? my own mother.

I have, to the best of my current abilities, made peace with the fact that at 85, her life-long devotion to evangelical Christianity may never be able to recognize or acknowledge my metaphysical ministry. To expect it or force the issue is to expect her to step away from a core belief that is the very foundation that sustains her. What I lecture on, write about and sing of is something rather heretical from what she has been taught since childhood.

After recently completing another CD of my visionary vocal music, I was left empty handed when it came to any acknowledgment of it from her. Even though I told myself that past experience should lead me to not expect any, I would be lying if I said I didn't hope for it. None came and once again, the little boy inside felt unacknowledged. I felt she didn't want my "coffee".

The brilliant measure of growth comes when I can personally voice this, authentically let it go and return my focus towards the thousands out there who faithfully ask for my "coffee" year after year. What a shame it would be to miss out on a sea of acknowledgment just because one tiny tributary changed course.

Truthfully, I've struggled with but grown to love her for the role she plays, for every time I return to her for any source of acknowledgment, I am reminded that lasting validation comes from within.

Years ago I heard the analogy of the train in the station.

I'm standing on the platform, my voice hoarse from yelling at the conductor to please open the doors. He keeps looking right at me, calling "all aboard" through cupped hands. Others seem to be boarding without any impairment. What's my problem?
Desperately, I run to the connecting windows and try to force them open with my bare hands but they simply will not budge.

I am exhausted. I give up. I wave my hand in the air in white flag surrender and the conductor and his train take their leave. Once the station is empty, I hear the faint rumblings of another train. Soon it glides into the station with little effort and the doors open. I suddenly realize, Oh my God, THIS is my train- my real train. Without effort, I saunter on board, take a seat in the pristine environment, relax and breathe.

Hmmmm, makes you wonder, huh?

How long will we continue with the insistent efforting that certain relationships, certain jobs, certain homes, certain organizations, certain habits must be our train? What if we began to deeply consider and subsequently entertain the idea that life doesn't have to be that hard? What if we signal to the conductor of these hardships to go on without us and allow them to move away - creating an open and receptive station for a healthier, more joyous train to enter into the our life's station?

Charismatic minister T. D. Jakes once gave this rousing sermon to his Dallas congregation.

"There are people who can walk away from you. And hear me when I tell you this! When people can walk away from you, let them walk. I don't want you to try to talk another person into staying with you, loving you, calling you, caring about you, coming to see you, staying attached to you. I mean hang up the phone. When people can walk away from you let them walk. Your destiny is never tied to anybody that left.

1 John 2:19 reads, "They came out from us that it might be made manifest that they were not for us. For had they been of us, no doubt they would have continued with us."

People leave you because they are not joined to you. And if they are not joined to you, you can't make them stay. Let them go. And it doesn't mean that they are a bad person it just means that their part in the story is over. And you've got to know when people's part in your story is over so that you don't keep trying to raise the dead. You've got to know when it's dead. You've got to know when it's over.

Let me tell you something. I've got the gift of good-bye. It's the tenth spiritual gift, I believe in good-bye. It's not that I'm hateful, it's that I'm faithful...and if it takes too much sweat I don't need it. Stop begging people to stay. Let them go! If you are holding on to something that doesn't belong to you and was never intended for your life, then you need to ..LET IT GO!
If you are holding on to past hurts and pains ...LET IT GO!

If someone can't treat you right, love you back, and see your worth...LET IT GO!

If someone has angered you ... LET IT GO!

If you are holding on to some thoughts of evil and revenge .. LET IT GO!

If you are involved in a wrong relationship or addiction ... LET IT GO!

If you are holding on to a job that no longer meets your needs or talents ...LET IT GO!

If you have a bad attitude...LET IT GO!

If you keep judging others to make yourself feel better... LET IT GO!

If you're stuck in the past and God is trying to take you to a new level...LET IT GO!

If you are struggling with the healing of a broken relationship....LET IT GO!

If you keep trying to help someone who won't even try to help themselves...LET IT GO!

If you're feeling depressed and stressed .... LET IT GO!

If there is a particular situation that you are so used to handling yourself and God is saying "take your hands off of it," then you need to... LET IT GO!"

Why all this talk about coffee, trains and letting go?

Because, I feel we stand at a crucial time in history when every conscious soul is inwardly being challenged to shed the skin of mediocrity and rise to the level of purpose that they agreed to before entering into this existence. Rise, now and be self honoring. Rise now and claim your worth. Rise now and own your divinity. Rise now and stand, individuated in your power.

And, if any continue to waste their efforts in worrying about who doesn't want their coffee, why the trains aren't cooperating or holding on to limitations with bloody knuckled loyalty, then those hardened hearts and deaf ears will have no other choice but to experience inevitable evolution through pain. So, why do it? Why live less than your potential. Who or what does that serve?

The great news... we don't have to. The choice is ours...the choice whispers to simply turn the other cheek. In other words, turn our vision back to what is true, back to what is supportive, back to what is fun and enlightening, back to what feeds our soul and together we walk triumphantly across the waters of this amazing and limitless life.
