Trust Your Vibes

Recognize Your Spirit First

by Sonia Choquette, Ph.D.
Before you can begin to recognize the presence of your spirit guides, you must first recognize your own beautiful spirit. Learning to see yourself as a spirit may be a brand-new concept, but it is the truth of who you are, who we all are. I grew up viewing myself and others as spirit and readily accepted the concept, but the power of that truth was never made as evident as when my eldest daughter, Sonia, was born.

I remember when she first came into the world how totally calm and serene, even Buddha-like she was, immobile and slightly blue. Then, with a powerful surge she took her first breath, and with a tremendous force she suddenly came alive. Her color changed from blue to bright pink, and she let out a wail to let the world know she had arrived. Right there, before my eyes, I witnessed her spirit enter her body and bring her to life with that breath. Ever since, I cannot look at another human being, myself included, without thinking that we, too, had a similar moment. Recognizing that it is your spirit that gives you life helps you appreciate the formidable force that is you.

Though we all share the same eternal breath of life, it manifests differently in each of us and in all things. The best way to connect with your own spirit is to start by recognizing what makes you come alive. Your spirit has its own presence, its own unique vibration that is totally distinct from your personality, which to a large degree is formed as a defensive shield around your spirit. Begin to wonder what your unique spirit is really like.

Getting in touch with your own spirit is the first step in getting in touch with spirit guidance. Start first by connecting with your own spirit. How would you describe your spirit? Not your mind, not your body, but the eternal, fiery life force called you. Can you describe your spirit? Is it gentle? Passionate? Commanding? Tentative? Creative? Shy? Playful?

Where in your life do you feel competent? What activities engage you so fully that you lose yourself? What lifts your spirit?

When growing up, my mother referred to us as spirits and we the same to her. She’d often ask, “What does your spirit want?” or “What does your spirit say?” in casual conversation. Knowing I was spirit made it much easier to connect with other spirits on this and other planes who could help me.

Next, begin noticing what feeds your spirit. By this I mean, what experiences, activities, and energies give you strength, fortify and nourish you at your core, leave you feeling satisfied, content with life, and comfortable in your own skin? What activities, experiences, and energies delight and surprise you, draw you into life, help you embrace life head-on, leaving you at peace within yourself?

My spirit, for example, is fed by classical music, beautiful fabrics, and sensuous perfumes. My spirit loves nature, especially the mountains and the scent of pine trees. My spirit loves exotic travel, speaking French, Egyptian bazaars, and rickshaw rides through New Delhi. It also loves storytelling, teaching others about their spirits, and above all, dancing. Any one of these activities expands my sense of who I am and leaves me content, fulfilled, and grounded.

My husband’s spirit is very different from mine. His spirit loves action and movement and being on the go. His spirit comes alive on a long bike ride, a summer nature hike, or skiing down a mountain at full speed. His spirit, also sensuous, is more organic than mine. The scents and sights of a roadside farm stand, spice markets in the Indian section of Chicago, or buckets of fresh fish in the Chicago market district send his spirit soaring with glee.

Think about what nurtures and feeds your spirit, and even more important, how sensitive and aware you are of your spirit and to feeding it the experiences it needs to thrive.

That is your first assignment—to feed and nurture your spirit. If you’re disconnected from and insensitive to your spirit, chances are very high you will also be disconnected from any input from your guides as well.

Start by paying close attention to your day-to-day life. Recognize the moments when you feel fully engaged and peacefully involved. What are you doing? Focus on activities that leave you with a sense of contentment and satisfaction. Better yet, note when you laugh, feel light-hearted, and weightless in your skin. These are the moments that your spirit is responding to. These are the experiences that open you up to the larger world of spirit guides.

Many of my clients admit, when asked, that they have very few moments that feed their spirit, and they just push through life with a sense of duty and responsibility. They feel more like they’re enduring life rather living it, let along enjoying it.

If this is you, then you’ve become hardened and insensitive to your spirit and consequently cut off from the spirit world and all its gifts. In our puritanical culture, where people are encouraged from childhood to put others ahead of themselves and to call any self-interest or self-care selfish, it’s easy to understand how such deadening occurs. Until you reverse this debilitating thinking your spirit will suffer, and you will shut out the gifts and guidance of the spirit world.

Start raising your sensitivity to your spirit by being very aware of and honest about how you feel. Responding to your spirit and giving it what it needs leaves you feeling satisfied and peaceful.

For some of you, knowing what your spirit needs may be perfectly clear, so go at it and begin to respond. Don’t worry that feeding your spirit will wreak havoc in your life; a little goes a long way when it comes to being sensitive and responsive to your spirit.

If you love nature, for example, a guilt-free walk or a run through the park or nature preserve, or a few hours in the garden once a week is all that’s necessary to feed and restore your spirit. The key word here is guilt-free.

If you love shopping and exploring exotic places, a few hours in new neighborhoods, new stores will do the trick. You don’t have to buy or buy much to satisfy your love of adventure. Just enjoy the variety of the outing without excuse or apology for taking time for yourself.

It’s in the initial moment when you respond to your spirit that you will first encounter your beautiful guides and companions. My mother, for example, loved to sew, and she spent many quiet, contemplative hours in her sewing room, where she often felt a connection to and even had long, telepathic conversations with her guides The more she fed her spirit and felt peaceful, the easier it was to connect with the subtle energies of her guides.

If you have been so disconnected from your spirit that you don’t know where to begin, don’t worry. If you are genuinely open to the idea of reconnecting, with a little exploration you’ll remember.

Try this:

Start by leaving free periods of say fifteen to twenty minutes open every week where you answer to no one but yourself. During this time allow yourself to pursue a beloved interest, such as playing the piano or spending time in the garden or simply daydreaming over a cup of tea guilt-free. Gradually add another day to your free time, moving up from once a week to twice a week, then more. You may have to remind yourself to see this as valuable time spent, especially if you are not used to doing things for yourself or taking time to be sensitive to your spirit. You may also have to teach others, like family members for example, especially small children who may not be used to you being unavailable to them when you are around that this is important time that needs to be respected. I know this may sound like a tall order, but if you approach this in short fifteen minute intervals everyone adjusts quite easily, even you.

Try this too:

Next, every morning while in the shower or preparing for your day, take five minutes and fill in the following: “If I weren’t afraid, I would . . .”

For example

If I weren’t afraid I would take Sundays off from work….

If I weren’t afraid I would wear better shoes

If I weren’t afraid I would have lunch with my best friend once a month

Do this out loud for three to five minutes. This allows your heart, the seat of your spirit, to speak freely and uncensored. After a few sessions your heart will direct you to exactly what nurtures and feeds you.

This exercise is a powerful way to reconnect with your spirit and become sensitive once again to what feeds it. Listen to your answers and follow those clues. Strive toward giving yourself a free period each day even if only a few minutes just to feed your spirit. During this time you can do whatever speaks to you guilt-free. Some people meditate. Some browse travel magazines. Some go for a run. Some read adventure novels. Some call old friends. Some see foreign films. The key is to know there is no correct way to feed your spirit other than to become interested, curious, sensitive, and above all, responsive to what nurtures you at your core. Feeding your spirit on a regular basis helps you become more sensitive to the spirit in all things, which opens the gateway to connecting to and being supported by your spirit guides.

Sonia Choquette, Ph.D.
Psychic, Healer, & Author

Sonia Choquette is a world-renowned and highly spirited six-sensory author, story teller energetic healer, and intuitive teacher who specializes in helping others recognize that we are all endowed with a sixth sense that we can count on.

A masterful and humorous teacher committed to strengthening intuition in our daily lives, she is the bestselling author of seven books:

Diary of a Psychic,
The Psychic Pathway,
Your Heart's Desire,
The Wise Child, True Balance, Your Psychic Pathway to New Beginnings,
Your Psychic Pathway to Joy,
and numerous audio editions.

A highly trained six-sensory intuitive and life guide, with an extensive background in Eastern and Western mysticism, Sonia was educated at the University of Denver and at the Sorbonne in Paris, and holds a Ph.D. in metaphysics.

She says, "I am comfortably and competently intuitive because I was encouraged at all times to be awake, aware, and guided by my sixth sense. I grew up in an environment that treated the sixth sense as the first and most important of our senses. I view it not only as natural, but actually essential to successful navigation in life. Intuition is a gift that we all have, that we can all experience, that we can all trust and that we all need!"

In working with people for more than 32 years of almost daily one-on-one private consultations, Sonia insists that the sixth sense is natural to us all, but dormant in most. Whether we call them "hunches" or "feelings" or as she does, "vibes," everyone has them, but unfortunately most people dismiss or ignore them to their detriment.

As we try to adapt to the world we now live in, Sonia emphasizes that trusting our vibes, our sixth sense in action is "no longer optional. Awakening and strengthening our sixth sense is becoming more and more fundamental to our ability to live harmoniously with ourselves and others in the new world order."

Paying attention to the sixth sense-learning to listen to it, to trust it, to train oneself to call on its guidance-are the challenges facing six-sensory people trapped in a five-sensory culture.

Approaching human potential "from the inside, out," Sonia offers a unique brand of grounded and practical techniques for people to use in order to activate their most sense and let it lead their everyday life. Her mission, in other words, is to help people to "trust their vibes."

She guides them in how to build a psychic scaffolding to support their sixth sense so they can be more brilliant and effective than they've ever thought possible.

She teaches that our sixth sense's primary function is to guide our soul's growth and keep us connected to our path and purpose-without its direction, we lose our way.

In her first book, The Psychic Pathway, Sonia introduces us to our 'vibes." In her latest book, Trust Your Vibes, she shows you how to master them.

Sonia's own path has encompassed bestselling books published in more than 23 countries, speaking and conducting workshops around the globe, thousands of grateful clients, and a home in Chicago that she shares with husband Patrick Tully, daughters Sonia and Sabrina, and a poodle named Miss T.
