Inside Chinese Metaphysics

Chinese Face Reading

by Barbara Finch
The face is the mirror of the mind, and eyes without speaking confess the secrets of the heart. – Saint Jerome

There are five basic areas of study in Chinese metaphysics - the Wu Shu or Five Arts. These include Ming (Destiny), Bu (Divination, Fortune Telling), Yi (Medicine), Shan (Mountain) and Xiang (Figure Analysis).

Face reading is part of Xiang, Figure Analysis. There is so much to be read in a person’s face and ears. They are a map of the person’s health, personality, ability to attract a mate, and gives an indication of his/her longevity.

The Five Elements

There are Five Elements that make up the physical world: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. As you might expect, people have faces that resemble one or more of the Five Elements.

The Wood face is long like the trunk of a tree, with a long nose. Prince Charles has a Wood face. These people are likely to have literary or scholarly pursuits.

The Fire face is triangular with a pointed chin, such as with actress Joan Collins’s face. These people are often impulsive and make quick decisions.

The Earth face is square, such as Winston Churchill’s. They are grounded, no-nonsense types. They but tend to be more methodical in their approach to life.

The Metal face is oval. Actress Kate Winslet is one example. These people are often in show business as they are independent and good with media.

The Water face is round and full, such as the face of Deng Xiao Ping, the late Chinese Premier. These people are sensitive and often have large, soft, watery eyes. Frequently they are caring and good listeners.

The Face’s Three Regions

In face reading the face is first divided into three sections. The forehead area (from the hairline to the top of the eyebrows) is for the rough ages of 14-30, the middle area (from the eyebrows to the bottom of the nose indicates the ages of 31-49, and the region from the bottom of the nose to the end of the chin indicates ages 50+.

In Chinese metaphysics the phrase “Heaven – Man (People) – Earth” is often used. In face reading the forehead region is “Heaven”, as it covers childhood when the person had little control of his/her own fate, but was under the control of the parents. A pimple or bruise here in the child’s life can indicate a problem with one’s parents. A round, smooth forehead usually indicates a good childhood while a rough forehead indicates a rough early life. The higher the hairline, the more intelligent the individual is considered to be; however, it has generally been considered a negative trait in women. It is harder for a man to control an intelligent woman, so women with high foreheads can have trouble with their mates.

The middle region is “Man” or People, ages 31-49, when we create our own luck, money and name. This area includes the ears; long earlobes indicate a long life. The nose indicates money and name. For a woman it especially indicates her husband.

The lower region is “Earth” or old age when we are supported by our employees, our children and our own resources. This area should be round and full. Facial problems here can signify problems with money, employees, children and more. A person with a very sharp chin needs to do more good things to receive good karma.

In face reading there are extensive maps of the face showing every age from birth to 100. The condition of your face can have an impact on your life. For example, the area between the eyes covers age 40; having a scar here can cause problems for the individual, such as illness, accidents or other bumps in life. The deeper the scarring, the more significant the problems can be. Thus it is important to keep one’s face as clear of blemishes and other problems. Moles are generally considered unfavorable unless they are hidden in the eyebrows. Plastic surgery can change your luck somewhat but it will not change your character; it is up to the individual to make good choices in their lives to avoid hardship.

Eyes

The eyes are the most important part of the face. It is important to keep good qi in your eyes with meditation, qi kung, exercise and adequate rest.

Some people have eyes that slope up on the outer edges. This is called “Phoenix Eye” or “Upper Eye”. They tend to be happy and cheerful, and easily attract romance. However, they can be very jealous. They are confident and more successful because they grab opportunities that come their way.

Others have eyes that drop down at the outer edges – called “Lower Eye”. This usually indicates someone of good character. They are often very patient and sensitive. Many are doctors because of their “mercy heart.”

Eyebrows

There should be 1+ finger-width between the eyes and the eyebrows. This indicates someone who is smart, generous, and lucky with property. The wider and more fleshy the area above the eyes, the more property the person may have. Brows that are too high can mean the person is too easily cheated in love. If the space above the eyes is narrow, this is not necessarily bad. The person is more likely to be decisive, but must take care to not be too temperamental. Very fleshy areas below the eyes often indicate lots of children.

The eyebrows should not be too close together (i.e., the inner edges of the brows should be parallel with the inner edge of the eyes). Eyebrows too close together (especially a uni-brow) can indicate someone who is too narrow-minded, picky and temperamental. This can be helped by careful plucking. Brows that are too wide can mean the person is too lax – they can be lazy, too forgiving and unable to resist temptation.

Very long brows help a person to be more stable and closer to one’s family. This person is more easy going. Very short brows may mean the person is more temperamental. He/She is more logical and practical, and makes decisions quickly.

The shape and condition of the brows tells you much about the person. Brows should be smooth and full; rough brows signify an unstable life. Thin and sparse brows indicate a person who is very detail oriented but less generous. Brows shaped like triangles indicate a very strong will. This person can overcome difficulties because he/she is very stubborn; however, he/she needs to be sure they are stubborn to do good and not bad. Flat, straight brows indicate the person cares about family, particularly if the brows are very long. He/She is interested in many things, kind yet strong, and often not skillful with his/her hands. Smooth, oval brows are considered the best for women – they indicate someone who is very gentle, spiritual, passionate, literary and friendly.

Nose

The nose reveals one’s money. For a woman it can indicate her husband’s ability to make money. A nose that is too big in proportion to the face can indicate someone with an ego that also disproportionately large. A bump on the nose can mean the person has a stronger personality and more likely to argue.

Nostril size and visibility affects one’s money. Rich people often have beautiful noses whether naturally or with surgery.

The bigger the nostrils, the more one will tend to spend. Also, if you can see a person’s nostrils from the front, the person is more likely to overspend. If you cannot see the person’s nostrils, they tend to spend money more wisely. Now, successful businesspeople often have big nostrils but you cannot see them from the front. They spend money to make money. There is a saying “If your nose is exposed, 10 rooms are nice and empty.” However, if the person’s nostrils are very small, he/she tends to be a miser.

Noses that curve toward the left can indicate the person’s father dies first. If the nose curves to the right, it can mean his/her mother will die first.

Lips

The thicker the lips, the more passionate the person is. If a person has a thin upper lip and a thick lower lip, the Chinese say that he/she says one thing and means another. Thin lips can mean the person is convincing but may not fulfill his/her promises.

Skilled face readers undergo several years of training to become proficient at this art. As you can see from the above, Chinese face reading can be a quite complex and detailed process. There is much more to consider when studying a person’s face, such as the color of the skin or the position of a mole in a particular area. (For example, dark circles under the eyes of a rested person can indicate problems with the kidneys.)

Still, the introductory information should give you enough information to begin basic face reading. Start studying your own face and the faces of those around you. What can you see?
