Understanding Midpoints
Part 3
|
|
|
by Basil Fearrington |

|
One of the most intimidating factors about using midpoints is the number of available midpoint pictures in any given Sort. When one begins to examine each and every picture, analysis can become confusing and chaotic. All midpoints were not created equal. By placing a focus on those that carry a more emphatic meaning, you gain more analytical focus easily.
Sun/Moon
At the top of the list of important midpoint pictures is the Sun/Moon midpoint. Any planet or Angle making hard aspect contact to this midpoint in a natal horoscope is as important as any other position! It is as important as the Sun, Moon, and Ascendant. It is vitally important. The reason why is because the Sun and Moon symbolize two of the three most important focal points of your Being.
By Sign, the Sun represents the fundamental nature of your life-energy. This focal energy is given a personality dimension by shining its energy upon the Moon. Together, the Sun and Moon represent the inner and outer centers of who you are. A planet or point making contact to this midpoint represents an archetype that is needed to merge one’s inner and outer natures into one. If one orients the Self around the archetype of the planet or point making hard aspect to this midpoint, a sense of completeness and fulfillment can be attained that gives a tremendous focus to the life that can be helpful vocationally and in many other ways..
The Sun/Moon midpoint is so important that its position should be noted on any horoscope that you print for analysis. Notate it in any way that you would like to but be aware of its degree and position because it is just that important, not only natally but regarding transits and arcs, especially those of the outer planets.
So powerful is this midpoint that you can often also include the House position of the aspecting planet within the overall analysis as well as the Sign placement. For example, a man has Saturn Rx =Sun/Moon. In his horoscope, Saturn is the co-ruler of his 4th House. This immediately tells you that the father dimension in the man’s life is probably highlighted in challenging ways. He was either not around physically or emotionally, was tyrannical, passive, etc. Even without the midpoint picture, this is going to be a powerful dimension in the man’s life. But inasmuch as it makes contact with Sun/Moon, is becomes extremely emphasized.
Saturn is in Gemini in the man’s 9th House. True to form, he suffered many beatings at the hands of his father. The father was distant emotionally, hyper-critical and quite tyrannical. This behavior drove my client away from home to get away from his father. He initially moved completely across the country and finally made residence in a foreign country, all motivated by the man’s need to be away from his father. Internationalism dominates the man’s life today and he is always working in multiple directions, vocationally speaking.
The Sun/Moon midpoint is also very important as a relationship index reflector. When a planet is at this midpoint, it is as though it is placed in the 7th House. In a previous essay, I mentioned that Bill and Hillary Clinton both have Neptune=Sun/Moon and have been on opposite sides of relationship deception. I cannot think of a more perfect example.
When Pluto is at this midpoint, the potential for maximum potential expression of the Sun/Moon blend is at its peak. Uranus=Sun/Moon brings individuation front and center (Bruce Lee, Michael Jordan). MC=Sun/Moon emphasizes the career and one’s status in the world (Madonna has Pluto=MC=Sun/Moon!!!!). ASC=Sun/Moon emphasizes ego dimensions (Arnold Schwarzennegger has ASC=Ura/Plu=Sun/Moon, emphasizing the ego and individuation). Node=Sun/Moon is the sign of the team player or the public persona. The idea is that the archetype of the aspecting planet or point becomes and front-and-center dimension of how the person projects (or needs to orient the Self) him or herself.
Author J.K. Rowling (Harry Potter) has Mercury=Sun/Moon and it is certainly easy to see that she has found the write modicum of expression for herself. Her success and fulfillment as an author has been astounding. Cher has Venus=Sun/Moon. The late Jacqueline Kennedy-Onassis has Mars (in Virgo in the 10th House) = Sun/Moon. The wild late singer, Janis Joplin has Jupiter=Sun/Moon. Adolf Hitler had Ura=Plu=Sun/Moon!!!!
Oprah Winfrey has a T-square of Pluto opposing Mercury, squared by Mars at Sun/Moon and does she ever orient herself around an energetic application of powerful communications and thought.
Hard aspect arcs and transits of the outer planets to the Sun/Moon midpoint usually reflects decisive relationship concerns, especially when Saturn or Uranus are involved. If the ruler of the 7th House or Venus are involved, the chances of a jarring relationship emphasis in life are quite high. All things considered, transits and arcs of Saturn or Uranus to the Sun/Moon midpoint can act as the period on the end of the sentence of a relationship that has been going bad.
ASC/MC
A planet at this midpoint is going to tell you a great deal about the characteristic way that a person goes about doing what they do. This is where the conscious ego and identity are merged around the archetype of the aspecting planet. It is quite the same as if the person has the planet on both Angles. Musician, Quincy Jones, has Venus at this midpoint. Quincy is generally known by all as “a sweetheart.”
Bill Clinton has Moon=Mars=Neptune=ASC/MC. This is quite a statement. The conjunction of Neptune and Mars are at his Ascendant natally. This reflects his enormous charisma. This conjunction is also semi-square ASC/MC which, with the Moon, really puts it all front and center. Using the flair and attractiveness of Libra, this charismatic dimension, the dimension of not always being what he appears to be is an absolute dominant factor in who he is.
Miles Davis had Pluto=ASC/MC and he is arguably the most prominent jazz musician of all times.
Oprah Winfrey has Mars=Pluto=ASC/MC, an energetic thrust for publicity and prominence that also tells us a lot about the way she goes about getting things done. She is certainly a “take-charge” individual.
In rare cases, the Sun/Moon and ASC/DES midpoints will be the same. When you find this in a horoscope, it is an indication of a monumental focus in a given direction.
Jupiter/Pluto
Many words have been written about Pluto in astrology that has to do with the word, “transformation.” In my opinion, this concept of Pluto easily throws one off track when it comes to midpoint theory. As the planet in our awareness today that is clearly defined as the slowest moving, Pluto’s effect is the most emphatic. Whatever it touches becomes as large or as small as its potential is. For example, in hard aspect contact with Mercury, Pluto’s effect on the mind can bring out genius or insanity. In hard aspect contact with Venus, we see the potential of the proverbial Nun or whore because romantic or sexual dimensions can be emphasized to such an extreme degree.
Jupiter is the planet of expansion, the “good-guy” of astrological lore. Even when Jupiter is challenging, it is because there is too much ice cream, too much sex, too much of anything pleasurable that gets you into trouble.
When Pluto makes hard aspect contact to Jupiter, all of this good-guy, lucky, expansion business is taken to an extreme dimension. The combination of these two planets represents the absolute maximum that there is in astrology when it comes to reflecting success potential.
Any planet (or point) at this midpoint reflects a success potential that is unparalleled. The footnote here is that grandiose success is not guaranteed just because this midpoint picture is active in a horoscope! There are people in the world who are uninterested in grand success. They make no effort, They avoid any possibility of success. There are others whose environmental circumstances make it impossible to be successful in a grand way. When those who are interested in success and who are out in the world trying to make things happen have natal activation of this midpoint natally, it reflects an ability to achieve success on a level that can be way over the top! And even when it is in the horoscope of a person who perhaps collects trash or delivers mail, that person will have a tendency to go farther in that position than others who do not have this position activated. Indeed, I have a client who worked as a sanitation employee. He worked his way all the way up to a position as a city Official within the sanitation division of the city. He has MC=Jup/Plu.
In this study of midpoint theory, the emphasis has been on the hard aspects the 90 degree Sort. When it comes to the Jup/Plu midpoint (please check the archives of this web site for my essay on The Signatures of Success and Prominence in the Horoscope), activation in any Sort has to be considered, whether it is a multiple of 30 degrees or 45 degrees. I should add that a variation of the Jup/Plu success can be seen when the Sun, Jupiter, and Pluto are seen in any combination: Plu=Sun/Jup; Jup=Sun/Plu, etc. In addition, when Pluto and Jupiter are conjunct, square, or in opposition natally (Bill Gates), this same potential exists.
Scanning my data base of prominent people, I note the following people who have natal Jup/Plu activation:
Barbara Walters AP=Sun=Jup/Plu;
Paula Abdul Mercury=Jup/Plu; Muhammad Ali Saturn=Jup/Plu; Pamela Anderson Saturn=Jup/Plu; Jennifer Aniston AP=Jup/Plu; Tyra Banks Nep=Jup/Plu; Halle Berry MC=Jup/Plu; Bobby Brown AP=Jup/Plu; Sylvia Browne Mer=Jup/Plu; Sandra Bullock MC=Jup/Plu; Johnny Carson Mars=Jup/Plu; Cher Ura=Jup/Plu; Deepak Chopra Moon=Jup/Plu; Dick Clark AP=Jup/Plu; Bill Clinton Node=Jup/Plu.
George Clooney Mer=Ura=Jup/Plu; Sean Connery Venus=Jup/Plu; Bill Cosby Mer=MC=Jup/Plu; Michael Douglass MC=Jup/Plu; Clint Eastwood Mer=Sun/Moon=Jup/Plu; Larry Flynt Mars=MC/ASC=Jup/Plu; Harrison Ford Sun=Moon=Sun/Moon=Jup/Plu!!!!!!!!!; Aretha Franklin Sat=Jup/Plu; Mel Gibson Sat=Jup/Plu; Arsenio Hall Moon=Sun/Moon=Jup/Plu; Whitney Houston AP=Jup/Plu; Ron Howard Ura=Node=Jup/Plu; Lee Iacocca AP=Jup/Plu; Michael Jackson AP=Jup/Plu; Gloria Estefan AP=Jup/Plu.
Mick Jagger Sat=MC=Jup/Plu; Peter Jennings AP=Jup/Plu; Elton John Sun=Jup/Plu; Magic Johnson Mars=Jup/Plu; Angelina Jolie Moon=Mars=Jup/Plu and since I know you immediately thought of Brad Pitt, he has MC=Jup/Plu; James Earl Jones Sat=Node=Jup/Plu; Michael Jordan MC=Jup/Plu; Bruce Lee MC=Jup/Plu; Jay Leno Mer=Jup/Plu; David Letterman Node=Jup/Plu; George Lucas Venus=Jup/Plu; Bob Mackie Mer=Nep=Jup/Plu; Paul McCartney Sat=Ura=Jup/Plu.
Rupert Murdoch Ura=Node=Jup/Plu; Eddie Murphy Ura=Jup/Plu; Ross Perot Sat=Jup/Plu; Dr. Phil Ura=Jup/Plu; the man who is once again known as Prince AP=Jup/Plu; Sidney Poitier Ura=Jup/Plu; Elvis Presley Mer=Jup/Plu; Condoleeza Rice Sat=Jup/Plu; Lionel Ritchie Moon=Jup/Plu; Shaquille O’Neal Mars=Jup/Plu.
Arnold Schwarzenegger AP=Jup/Plu; Jerry Seinfeld Sun=Jup/Plu; Paul Simon Mars=Sat=Ura=Jup/Plu; Steven Spielberg AP=Jup/Plu; Howard Stern Mer=Ura=Jup/Plu; Martha Stewart Sun=Ven=Jup/Plu; Barbara Streisand Sat=Jup/Plu; John Travolta - Venus=Mars=Ura=Jup/Plu.
Are you getting the picture? I could go through my client files and show even more. I have one client who has Sun=Moon=Mercury=Venus=Uranus=Jup/Plu. Although she started her life on the streets in substance abuse, etc., she now makes $40k per month as the owner of her own business. And the list goes on and on.
Oprah Winfrey is one of the wealthiest women in the world. She has Moon=Uranus=Jup/Plu.
But, please, keep things in perspective. Activation of this midpoint natally guarantees nothing (nothing in astrology does). It is simply an indication of great success potential when one tries hard and most importantly, when one is on the correct path! So many people in the world are not doing what they are supposed to be doing for one reason or the other. Many give in to ideas about security that are rewarded by society rather than go after the greater potentials for success that are shown in the horoscope. Always remember that planets guarantee nothing. They are simply reflections of what can be. That said, activation of the Jup/Plu midpoint at birth should always be taken as a strong symbol of success potential.
Saturn/Pluto
In the Jup/Plu midpoint, we saw its great potential for success as a reflection of Pluto taking the Jupiter archetype to its extreme. In the Saturn/Pluto midpoint, we see Pluto taking Saturn to its extreme quite a different story. Where Jupiter is very expansive and opportunistic, Saturn represents a control factor that often manifests in delays, frustrations, limitations, etc. Pluto’s contact to it takes these potentials to an extreme so we have a very powerfully debilitating midpoint picture in Saturn/Pluto, especially when it involves the inner planets or Angles.
In transit and arc work, the Pluto-Saturn relationship usually corresponds to times of very hard work for little gain. Loss of some kind is a frequent experience during these times. The overall nature of this combination is very difficult.
But there is a flip side. There is always a reward for hard work, tremendous focus and discipline. Michael Jordan has Sun=Sat/Plu in his horoscope. No professional athlete has worked harder at his or her craft than has Jordan and the results have been obvious. He is a super champion and winner, respected by all of his peers and sports enthusiasts. And this is due to a tremendous work ethic that was simply untiring.
Martha Stewart has AP=Sat/Plu, normally a position that brings difficulties and troubles to a front-and-center position in one’s life. While Stewart certainly had a difficult time with her indictment and conviction that resulted in prison time, her life, for the most part, has been well rewarded as a result of tremendously hard work, focus, and discipline.
While it is often the case that there is gain from hard work relating to this midpoint, it is much more typical that the dark side of Saturn manifests itself in extreme forms. When the Moon or Venus are here natally, it is a sign of deep emotional and relational concerns that are challenging. The Sun at this midpoint illuminates difficulties in a front and center manner in one’s life. Mercury at this midpoint relates to deep depression or, on the flip side, to genius. Mars at this midpoint is typically quite frustrating because the need to apply energy a certain way is thwarted at every turn. This may be most telling in the area of life experiences denoted by Aries cusp position in the horoscope.
Nelson Mandela’s horoscope has Sun=Sat/Plu!
Uranus/Pluto
The sixties in America were a time of new beginnings. Those beginnings came about because old structures were torn down. The civil rights movement came alive to fight for equality where there had been racism. Styles of clothing changed. Hair styles were grown long. Almost anything that could be done to upset the status quo happened. This is the essence of the Uranus/Pluto midpoint. It is revolutionary, exciting and individuated. The most extreme dimensions of Uranus are highlighted here. Any planet or point making contact to this midpoint will take on this overall flavor in terms of what the aspecting planet or point might be. The energy here is one that goes against the grain and popularity be damned.
Muhammad Ali will forever be an icon of the sixties movement. He stood up against the establishment for what he believed in at a time when what he did was absolutely unheard of for a Black person in America. He went out of his way to make a statement against all that he deemed unfair and he was willing to do whatever it took to support the ideals of fairness, justice, and equality. Ali has AP=Ura/Plu=Neptune!
Madonna has always been controversially outspoken about things she sees as being wrong and unjust. A few of her videos have been banned from appearing on television because they were too risqué. As well, she has been fiercely independent. She has Sun=Ura/Plu, the illumination of independence, individuation and freedom.
Arnold Schwarzenegger has ASC=Ura/Plu and you’ve never seen Arnold associated with a team. He has always stood alone as an individual, taking on all comers on his own.
Mars/Saturn
This midpoint suggests frustration and difficulty. Saturn’s control factor wins out over the need of Mars to apply energy. This is like trying to fire a gun that has a stuffed barrel. There is an implosion rather than an explosion. When applied to human terms, it refers to frustration and illness as a result of it when the Sun aspects the midpoint. Reinhold Ebertin referred to this midpoint as the “death axis.” The reference includes serious illness as well as affairs of death. In the best case scenario, energy becomes more efficient and you have one who is able to command armies. Adolf Hitler has AP=¥/§and his association with death was certainly brought forward to the public. When you see that this midpoint is activated natally, just feel the sense of a stalemate, frustration, etc. The Moon here is emotionally frustrating. Mercury is mentally frustrating. Venus is relationally frustrating. Uranus would intensify it, etc.
Sun/Jupiter
The Sun/Jupiter midpoint is like a blessing. It refers to success, good luck, and has a bit of the flavor of the Jupiter/Pluto midpoint in terms of the success potential. The Moon here suggests emotional happiness; an easy fulfillment of one’s primary needs. Mercury here suggest success or happiness through speaking or writing; optimism. Venus here points to grace in relationships; happy love relationships. Pluto here is a variation of ¢=?/À. This is an empowerment of success, happiness and enriching things. The Midheaven here suggests a successful career in the same way that a Sun-Jupiter conjunction to the Midheaven does.
Jupiter/Uranus
Along with Jup/Plu and Sun/Jup, the Jupiter/Uranus midpoint is a “good guy.” Jupiter received intensification from Jupiter like a lightning rod, accentuating Jupiter’s propensity for good fortune, luck, etc. This is especially so when the Sun, Moon, MC, ASC, or AP are making the aspect contact.
Pairs That Include an Angle
Any midpoint picture that includes a planet, Angle or point with the Ascendant or Midheaven represents an archetype that is projected out into the world easily, just as if the planet is on the Angle.
For example, Michael Jackson has Moon=Sat/ASC. This tells you that there is a control factor placed on his style of self projection (Sat/Asc) in emotional terms. Stated simply, we are talking about emotional inhibition.
Bill Clinton has Jup=Plu/MC. You can simply feel the sense of prominence and success in this picture. It is as though that Pluto has multiplied itself dozens of times upon the Ascendant.
George W. Bush has Sat=Sun/ASC, suggesting a very controlled, conservative projection of Self.
In next month’s essay, I will show examples that will help to understand how best to use midpoint theory.
