Crazy Wisdom in an Insane World
by Lonny Brown, Ph.D. |
|
|
Freedom is understanding we are not in control and never will be...
the secret to life is "letting go
with all your might."
- Wes "Scoop" Nisker, Crazy Wisdom
Crazy Wisdom - AKA "Divine Madness " - is Enlightenment as manifested by certain highly original characters who fit in no categories and break all the rules. Crazy Wisdom is ironic, humorous, wild, contradictory. It is the spontaneous free-spirited, teachings of those masters of life who we usually recognize too late as truly inspired. Frequently ignored or barely tolerated in their own times, they're the visionary rebels, the nonconforming creative artists of the soul, the cultural conscientious objectors who challenge and chide us when we take ourselves too seriously.
Notable examples of the crazy wise include the Indian saint, Neem Karoli Baba, who wore only a blanket and would often disappear when too many devotees congregated; the renegade Tibetan monk Trogyam Trungpa, who imbibed generous amounts of saki while nearly single-handedly transplanting Tibetan Buddhism to the West; and the great thirteenth-century Islamic poet, Rumi, who's exhortions to his readers include one to "behead yourself."
Crazy wisdom is the antidote for self-righteousness, religiosity, and homo-chauvinism - the presumption that humans are more important than the rest of creation. It is the pro-nonsense path of psychic survival in an insane world. Crazy wisdom is the ultimate coping skill that masters life's uncertainties and contradictions by embracing them. It takes into account the awesome vastness of the universe, and the all-too predictable stupidity of men.
At once secular and super-natural, beyond logic and language, crazy wisdom can come through prayer, meditation, dreams, nature, art, wine, halucinogens, ecstatic dance, poetry and song, but rarely in organized churches and schools. It can be playful, contrary, innocent, romantic, idealistic, iconoclastic or downright anti-establishmentarian. It is ever-changing, but always authentic. Watch for Crazy Wisdom at a spontaneous event near you.
