A General Review; Some Subtleties
|
 |
by Noel Tyl

We’ve learned that a most productive, even life-saving orientation to medical astrology reflects the premise that planets registering aspect tension in the natal horoscope correlate with parts of the body and its systems that will be highly vulnerable to break-down during the aging process in life development and/or upon bacterial onslaught. This profile supports what I call one’s “accumulated developmental deficit.” [For full development of this these with many, many examples, please see my The Astrological Timing of Critical Illness.]
Another part of the hypothesis is that upon the incidence of critical illness, much more often than not, these critical areas, including the ruler of the 12th, the Ascendant itself or its ruler, the Sun or the Moon, are exacerbated by Arcs and Transits. The prime catalysts are Pluto, Saturn Neptune, Mars, in that order.
As this series of articles now comes to a close, we should review the development of this idea and add some subtleties to the practice of the theory

Billionaire Howard Hughes was an extremely “celebrated” germophobic hypochondriac, an eccentric recluse living for years and years in a stately hotel, administering his empire in absentia. Hughes had Neptune opposed his Sun, the ruler of his 12th; a decidedly strong statement for hypochondrias, as we shall see. Additionally, Pluto in Gemini was opposed his strongly angular Mercury, ruler of his Ascendant (and introducing sensibilities about the mind-set).
Similarly, musical genius and pundit Oscar Levant was a colossal hypochondriac and morphine addict [December 27, 1906 at 11:45 PM in Pittsburgh PA]. Levant was born with Neptune opposed his Sun, with Pluto opposed his Mercury, ruler of the 12th and the Ascendant.
Saddam Hussein is a well-known germophobic (people formerly coming to him for an audience had to wash themselves according to a strict regimen). Hussein [Tyl rectification: April 28, 1937 at 8:10 AM in Tikrit IRAQ; Asc 24 Gemini45] has a peregrine Neptune quindecile Saturn at the Aries Point! And Pluto squares Venus, ruler of the 12th.
Marcel Proust, the great French existentialism writer, ostensibly left life at age 32 and lived his remaining years in a closed-off apartment, in a cork-lined bedroom, withdrawn from society. Proust [July 10, 1871 at 11:30 PM LMT in Paris, FR; Asc 23Aries05] Had Neptune on the Ascendant, co-ruling the 12th, square to the Sun and to Uranus, ruler of the 12th.
What we see here in each case is a conspicuous statement by Neptune, and involvement with the 12th and the Ascendant, the Sun, and very often with Pluto. This indeed suggests the hypothesis that hypochondria enters the thought process through the symbolism of Neptune and Mercury when configured within the illness profile topographically. This indeed puts forth yet again, the thesis that disease enters the human condition to a great extent through the mind, through emotional evaluation.

Jackie was the first black athlete to play Major League baseball in the United States; and he became the first modern day spokesperson and media focus for Civil Rights. He is known throughout the world for his exemplary play and his noble fight for Negro rights.
The planet Neptune in the 12th opposes the New Moon birth, the Sun and Moon in conjunction, with the Moon ruling the 12th and the Sun ruling the Ascendant. This is a very serious statement for an awesomely conditioned athlete-- pertinent to eventual health breakdown. Toward the end of his life, after his sensational ten-year baseball career, Jackie developed diabetes and became blind [The Sun and Moon rule the eyes.]

John F. Kennedy was an extremely ill man, beyond his war injury to his back. He was a victim of the rare Addison’s disease, a chronic adrenal cortical insufficiency (Mars) related to osteoporosis (Saturn), with brownish skin pigmentation (Saturn) as one of the externalized symptoms. Note that Kennedy had Neptune conjunct Saturn, bringing bones (including the spine) and skin into consideration strongly. See Mars (adrenal cortex) conjunct Mercury, ruler of the 12th.

This double-ringed horoscope shows the Solar Arc positions for Mrs. Onassis at the time of her death from lymphatic cancer. This cancer syndrome is Neptune ruled, and we see Neptune extremely prominent at the Midheaven.
The key focus here for our work in this series has been also to see how Arcs announce extreme pressure on the system within consideration of critical illness: at the time of her death, SA Mars had come exactly to conjunction with her Ascendant; SA Saturn was opposed her Midheaven (and probably with her actual birth time, not rounded off, this latter position would be tighter).
We can note that the great Evangelist, Billy Graham [November 07, 1918 at 3:30PM EST in charlotte NC] is ailing at this time in the closing of 2005. In interviews, he speaks impassionedly about his readiness and happiness to die, to go his Heaven. We can see SA Pluto opposing his Ascendant, with transiting Neptune approaching a series of conjunctions with Uranus, ruler of his 12th.
***In closing this series of articles on Medical Astrology, we must appreciate that we have been learning about a critically important frontier of modern astrology. While we yearn to know more, to be more helpful to others fighting off illnesses, anticipating crises in health, and indeed helping to save lives, we must remember that not knowing all keeps all of us human. That humility opens the door even more to knowledge yet to come.
