"The Body Knows" - ask a medical intuitive

by Caroline Sutherland
Dear Caroline,

I am 57 years old and am in the thick of menopause. Lately I have been really anxious, experiencing heart palpitations, memory loss and a feeling that I am out of control. What is going on?

Brigitte S. Omaha, Nebraska

Dear Brigitte,

You said it – you are in the thick of menopause. I can almost guarantee that these seemingly unrelated symptoms are all due to the change of life.

I am a medical doctor’s daughter and I am a firm believer in getting both the traditional and alternative perspectives at any time - especially menopause.

Personally, I was able to coast through the early stages of menopause with out difficulty. I took a few herbs, experimented with some progesterone cream and basically skated through it. Then a couple of years later, it was evident that I needed some hard-core help.

Bone density became an issue, like you, I noticed short-term memory issues and anxiety.

I started with a blood test, which found that I was low in estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. I called upon my medical doctor who specialized in hormone balancing and I consulted with an endocrinologist. I also enlisted the support of a FNP (Family Nurse Practitioner) to guide me with some non-traditional approaches.

As soon as I started taking bio-identical estrogen, progesterone and a small amount of testosterone each day, I immediately felt better. I knew I was on the right track. The body knows – it will tell us every moment what it wants and what it needs.

Seek help from a good local practitioner, read the current books on bio-identical hormone balancing and get going.

Hormone balancing is the way of the future as far as the preservation of memory, bone density, anti-aging, sex drive and well-being is concerned. There is a lot of misinformation out there as well as some useful strategies.

How do you sift through it?

*Get the blood work done and find out what your hormone profile is.

*Seek expert help – get a referral for an MD or FNP from your local compounding pharmacy.

*Monitor yourself and your symptoms – don’t give up until you feel balanced and don’t let anyone tell you your symptoms are “all in your head” or you are “just being emotional!”

*Be prepared to spend money – it won’t be unusual to spend about $150. per month on various hormone compounds – just like the phone bill, I consider this expense to be just part of my monthly outlay and far more valuable as far as well-being is concerned.

The symptoms you describe above can be helped with specific hormone balancing. It is not YOU, your past or your personality that is triggering your seeming “emotional” issues or feeling – I can almost bet it is hormones!

Hormone balancing will be a life long quest and practice. Men and women will continue to need hormone balancing well into their 80’s.

We are living longer. The current life expectancy of the average male or female is 80 years of age. It won’t be long before 100 is average. These are exciting years ahead.

Dear Caroline,

I just love your column. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us, it’s so insightful.

In the past I had suffered for about 10 years with major chronic constipation. As I became more aware of my body through my spiritual growth I eventually became mostly regular again. I went through a series of colon hydrotherapy sessions and changed my diet. A few years later I also had a polyp removed from my colon and with all these things my system became better. I don’t exercise much but I keep busy and do yoga a few times a week.

However, it seems that I keep going back to this problem whenever I travel, don’t eat as many salads, or take Advil for pain relief - and I’m not sure how much of a role stress plays in this. For the last few years when I get constipated I usually start taking some Metamucil and eat more salads, but right now that does not seem to be helping.

I know, through Louise Hay’s book “You can heal your life”, that constipation has to do with holding on to old ideas and not letting go of the past so I do work on these issues at times. I work hard at not having constipation be a focal point but I’m a little worried that this is becoming more and more of an issue for me again.

I’m hoping you might be able to give me some feedback on this.

Sincerely,

Abby C., Nampa ID

Dear Abby,

Chronic constipation seems to be a huge problem in our society. In fact the “B.M. equation” from constipation to irritable bowel syndrome as well as diarrhea affects millions.

Take a look at the foods that you are eating. Dairy products for some people can be very constipating; so can wheat products. Even bran or whole grain bread despite what we are told can make a person constipated. This is due to an inflammatory response – the body doesn’t like it – the body knows. Sugar consumption can have a deleterious effect as well as it enters the stomach, fermenting other contents and gas is formed. As the gas pushes through the intestinal tract, it passes out the rectum and can harden or dry the stool making it impossible to pass thus creating constipation, hemorrhoids or even rectal fissures.

It doesn’t stop there. If the thyroid is low, a person can be constipated. Did you know that soy consumption can suppress thyroid function. Take a look at your soy intake – is it excessive. The candida yeast syndrome or out of balance bowel flora can affect your quest for the perfect B.M.! Take some acidophilus and yeast eradication supplementation.

Here are some suggestions.

1. Avoid offending foods – namely wheat, dairy products and sugar.
2. Treat yeast.
3. Check thyroid function.
4. Drink lots of water.
5. Consume plenty of fiber – flax seeds, psyllium seeds and chia seeds can be added.
6. A tablespoon of olive oil can coat the lining of the intestine so the stool slides through easily.
7. Magnesium can help - 250 mg taken at bedtime.
8. Schedule a colonoscopy – keep your doctor apprised of your condition.

No let’s take a look at the metaphysics. You are right to quote my friend and publisher, the legendary Louise Hay author of the bestseller You Can Heal Your Life.

The correlation for constipation is “hanging on.”

Take a look at what you are holding on to. Do you have past issues, financial concerns or worry about your family? As these mental machinations grind away, there is no rest in the body and the subconscious desire to hold on or control can manifest in constipation.

Being on a spiritual path is fraught with uncertainty. Personal self-mastery leads us to navigate through uncharted waters with a lighthearted release knowing that the universe is taking care of things. I let go and let God is the appropriate affirmation here.
