LEO NEW MOON
August 4 2005: 12.48 Leo
8:05 P.M. PDT; 11:05 EDT

Bravehearts
By Dana Gerhardt

Each year, the Leo New Moon brings an opportunity to express your star quality—the courage, the generosity, the creativity and unabashed playfulness—the bold and brave heart within you. Leo is about visibility—allowing your inner radiance to be seen by others. Seeing yourself reflected in their eyes, you affirm what’s special about you, why your presence matters in the world. There is a difference between “divinity” and “celebrity.” The latter is an exclusive club. Yet divinity is widespread—every one of us carries this mega-glittery star stuff inside. To shine you don’t need to be onstage at Madison Square Gardens. Simply respond to that little voice inside urging you to step out and have fun. Is there something you’ve wanted to do but haven’t yet dared to try?

A couple years ago at the Leo New Moon, I asked my hairdresser to put fuschia and purple streaks in my hair. “A desperate attempt to look young,” quipped my partner. I understand why he’d say this to a woman almost fifty years old. But the truth is, I liked these colors and didn’t care much what people thought of them. I felt a need. I was surprised at what came next. People got friendlier. Their eyes were a little brighter when they looked at me, their smiles more genuine. Handing me change, the cashier at the health food store enthused “I love your hair!” Outside the movie theater an eight-year-old skated by and shouted “Excellent hair!” Women my age confided “Your hair looks great… wish I could do that.”

We love to see people expressing themselves, playing at life, having fun with being human. Though it’s not socially appropriate to think too much of ourselves, our hearts do get stronger when we do. What’s more, our friends, our family, the whole energetic field around us, is energized by our vitality and joy. When we love ourselves, and love what we’re doing, we make the whole world happier. If you know you’re good at something, if you’re willing to express your dreams and passions without fear, when you put crazy colored streaks in your hair just because you feel like it, you’re doing the work of the Leo cycle. And you better get used it—for Leo’s work will become increasingly important over the next two years.

Last month Saturn entered Leo, where it will remain until September 2007. Saturn brings tests and new responsibilities. In the area of life described by the sign it’s transiting, we’re asked to get ourselves together, to clean up our acts. Leo is the sign of leadership—and Saturn will certainly be testing leadership on the global scene. More personally, Leo rules creativity and self-expression—again, that divine gift inside which must be developed and released. If you’ve been holding back from expressing who you really are, over the next two years, Saturn will insist you start taking yourself more seriously. If you’re willing to do the work required, these could be strong confidence-building years. Leo is also the sign of play, romance, and love—blockages in the heart must now be addressed. Whatever you’re doing that’s not in line with your highest self, or that isn’t coming from your heart, may fall apart at this time—so that you can put it back together again on a more authentic foundation. If you’ve already been working diligently in Leo’s direction, you could see great rewards.

If you’re old enough, you can get a clue about how this time might go for you, by reflecting on what happened the last time Saturn was in Leo—from June 1976 to July 1978. Of course you’ve grown much since then. Ask yourself, knowing what you know now, is there anything you would have done differently during those years? Those born with Saturn in Leo may see especially important changes over the next two years. So will all the Baby Boomers, born with Pluto in Leo. When Saturn reaches the degree of their natal Plutos, their lives could take a dramatic turn. But not to worry. Remember that Leo journeys with dignity and joy—with the self-possession of a lion, the enthusiasm of a child, the confidence of a king. This is the time to go for it!
