Bastrika Pranayama-
bellows breath
Bastrika pranayama is very good for keeping the body healthy all year round but has a special benefit in the fall as it helps to boost the immune system and keep the body free from flus and colds that are common during this season. Performing this pranayama during the fall will also help to ward away the winter blahs and keep one feeling light and in good spirits all year round.
This breathing exercise helps to cleanse the body of toxins and is good for those with asthma.
· Exhale so that the lungs are clear
· Sit straight
· Inhale and exhale through the nose rapidly and simultaneously expand and contract the stomach in a pumping action
· Start with twelve breaths two sets work up to twenty four breaths, two sets.
Herbs for the Fall
It is very important that we take care of our health in the fall.
This is the season when the air element can get out of balance due to dryness, wind and fluctuating climate.
Using warm and soothing herbs during the fall can keep us in balance all year round.
Cumin is one warming herb that can be added to soups or stews, chili and stir fries. It helps to keep the urinary system clear, improves digestion and detoxifies the body. Drinking a nice glass of cumin tea on a dreary day gives one energy and stamina, simply boil a teaspoon of cumin to a glass of water and enjoy!
Cinnamon, cardamom and clove are great herbs for the fall. These can be added to baking, oatmeal or tea.
Boil a glass of milk with a pinch of each of these herbs and stir in some unpasturized honey for a soothing treat that improves digestion and keeps the air element in balance!
The essential oils can be rubbed into aching muscles or rubbed onto the soles and palms to increase warmth and keep away colds and fall ailments. The essential oils can also be diffused in the air to increase energy and fill the home with warmth and comfort.
