Body Mind & Spirit

Internationally Renowned Psychic Medium

by John Holland
Bereavement and The Medium

Since I started writing this monthly column, I’ve had hundreds of emails asking a varitety of questions. As you can imagine, it’s almost impossible to answer all the questions personally, and while I have posted some of the more commonly asked questions on my website, I thought it would be a good idea to answer some of them this month once again. A large majority of emails and letters I get are from people asking: “When they should go to a medium?” I have been asked the following questions and wanted to share them with you.

Losing a loved one is one of the hardest things we have to go through in our lives. Many people have consulted mediums to help them with their bereavement process. I do believe highly that one should not run to a medium for a message as soon as someone they know passes. You must go through the bereavement process and hopefully, if needed seek counseling. You do not have to go through this alone. Everyone goes through the process in his or her own way, and their own time. I recommend if you know someone who has lost someone, just be there for them and tell them: “ I am sorry for your loss and share in your sadness, I just want to let you know I am here for you if you need me.” Those words alone just may be the help and comfort they need during a difficult time. In my first book “Born Knowing” I have included peoples stories of their readings, how those on the Other Side make contact with us, and how a medium works. A big portion of the book where clients have given their stories of their loss, I have included bereavement advice, which I received from a counselor. I hope this article helps you at this time or when you may need it. My main message has always been ‘Love is everlasting and neither death nor time can ever separate us.”

What role do you feel mediumship plays in coping with the loss of a loved one?

Everyone deals with loss in his or her own highly unique and personal way. In all the years that I have been practicing as a medium, I’ve never been able to come up with a standard response to this question since everyone and every situation is different Some people bury their feelings so deep, it can take years before they surface, while others have prepared for their loss and not only come to terms with it, but move on. I feel that mediumship can play an important part in coping with loss, particularly when there’s unfinished business. By that, I refer to the many cases I’ve experienced when the sitter didn’t get to say everything before their loved one passed on – then it’s about closure, being able to say those “goodbyes” through the medium. Equally, many readings are from a father who (for whatever reason) was unable to utter those all important words of love during their time here in the physical world. I’ve had many sitters in tears, as their father communicates through me, to tell them how proud he is, or how much he wished he’d been able to say that he loved them. That’s always a beautiful part of my business for me, when I see the joy and love. That’s just one small example of when mediumship does have a role to play. Of course, there are many others.

Is there a set 'waiting' period, before we should try and contact someone in spirit?

You should not run to a medium if you just lost someone. I truly believe that people should go through their bereavement process first, so that when you to go to a medium you are better equipped emotionally to hear from those on the Other Side. There’s a natural settling in period for the person who is newly passed, just like when we buy a new home, you don’t rush out and invite all your friends until you’ve set up house, got the tables and chairs set up and the pictures on the walls! I believe that when you pass over, it takes a little time to settle down, to become comfortable in your new surroundings and work out the who’s, the why’s and when’s - before attempting to communicate with the living. Remember also very importantly, they have to now learn to work with a medium. I generally suggest waiting for around six months before seeing a medium, and as always, make sure it’s a reputable medium, someone who’s been recommended, and someone with absolute integrity.

How often can we talk to our passed loved ones?

As much as you want really, but you’ll often hear me say: “Your loved ones are just a thought away.” Just by thinking of them - you are talking to them. Also trust me when I say: “They want to talk to you as much as you want to talk to them!” I have some clients who have felt the need to seek out one medium after another to speak to their son who tragically was killed in a car crash. In a way, it was their own way of coming to terms with his death, and strangely as it seems, also keeping his memory so firmly alive in their minds. When they visited me, it was an amazing session. He came through loud and clear with so much information to validate his identity that his parents both laughed and cried. I did tell them how they needed to now acknowledge that he is alive and well and try to move on with their lives. They can still talk to him whenever they want - but not to become dependent on a medium. He will continue to send them signs on his own.

When we communicate with the other side, is it hard work for the spirit?

From doing this work for many years and studying mediumship, I believe that it does take a lot of work for those on the Other Side to come in to this dense, slow moving molecular world. It’s really all about energy. I will raise my energy, my vibrations to such a level, as they lower theirs, and then a blending process can takes place. It’s only then, that communication will begin and I will feel, hear and sense what they want me to convey. When this happens, it’s like I am infused with energy, and I will convey in any way I can what the communicator is trying to get across. It’s a 3-way process that requires a great deal of energy. Often the link fades after a short while, and I can only imagine that some spirits can only maintain the link for a short period, before their energy diminishes … until the next time. Of course some are better at it than others.

Are there any circumstances when we shouldn't try and communicate?

The only time I would say not to communicate as I just answered previously is when you just lost someone. It is said that when a person dies, they are very close to you, but we are so emotional at that time and cannot feel or notice them. Once again they need to deal with the loss before they can even think about hearing from them. People are still in shock. Also, many people ask me to communicate and have their loved ones help them with situation that people need to deal with themselves. They can help to guide, you and send you encouragement and love, but they cannot interfere with the lessons that you are meant to learn here.

What does it mean if a medium cannot bring through the spirit we want to talk to?

There are times when someone comes to see me and nothing happens. It does not mean that they do not want to talk to you, or that they do not love you. It could mean that now is not the time for communication. Often times though when they are not available - someone else will come through. I have a wonderful story about a woman who asked to see me. It was a rare occasion when she couldn’t visit my office, so I agreed to go to her house. The reading took place in her mothers room, with all her pictures around her, her jewelry laid out still on her dressing table. So the stage was set. It almost goes without saying, that it was NOT her mother who came through, but a close friend of hers who came through with an oxygen tank (as she had suffered from emphysema. I told her what I was seeing and sensing and she then surprised me by yelling out: "What the hell does she want !?" Well, it was one of her best friends. Since her Mum had passed away, she’d become a recluse and hardly went out or saw her friends anymore. So her friend came through with a strong message - encouraging her to get out again and re-integrate herself back into life.

Sometimes, you may think that you want to contact someone specifically, but sometimes the message is from some one different who you weren’t expecting, or you may become the medium or middleman for some one else and end up delivering a message to them. Also many times, people don’t always get what they want - but what they need.

PSYCHIC TIP

Gratitude

Gratitude encourages intuition and abundance. Be thankful for who and what is in your life — instead of complaining about what you don’t have. Appreciate all the abundance and goodness that’s around you, whether big or small. Be thankful for your health, children, sunny days, your garden, family, best friends, or even the person who let you jump ahead in line at the bank. The more joy you begin to notice and appreciate, the easier it is for your intuition to lead you to even more happiness and prosperity.

Affirmation for the month:

I focus my attitude on gratitude.

See you next month for our continuing journey of discovery. Do something wonderful today for yourself – you deserve it!

Internationally Renowned Psychic Medium,
Teacher & Author

John Holland is an internationally renowned psychic medium, who has been lecturing, demonstrating and reading for private clients for over 14 years. He is dedicated to an ongoing development of his unique gift and takes his work very seriously. John says, "If I can help people connect with someone on the other side, and bring peace, comfort and perhaps some closure, then I've done my job."

"Mediumship is more than just delivering messages", he says, "it's about the confirmation that once our physical body dies, our 'spirit' lives on, and how the spirits of our relatives, friends and loved ones are still connected to us."

John, author of best selling BORN KNOWING & PSYCHIC NAVIGATOR is keen to promote the difference between being a psychic and a medium. In Psychic Navigator, John teaches the reader the mechanics of their inner awareness in a new way. PN includes many fascinating exercises from John’s popular workshop series, as well as an accompanying meditation CD. John believes that it is essential to understand how to integrate ones psychic abilities, so that they help to guide the reader in all areas of their personal and professional lives, so they truly understand that they ARE spiritual beings with limitless potential.

As for the difference between being a psychic and a medium, a psychic can draw information from your aura, which can provide knowledge about both current and future events, whereas a medium is the conduit between the spirit world and the physical world - the connection, and as John so often calls it - a 'soul to soul connection'.

Using this linking process, spectacular results have been achieved, with clients throughout North America, Canada, Europe, and Australia. He is a regular guest on radio shows across the USA. His story was originally profiled on CBS "Unsolved Mysteries” and the success of Born Knowing and Psychic Navigator has enabled him to captivate audiences throughout the world.

John’s public demonstrations provide his audience with a unique glimpse into this fascinating subject, which he delivers with a mix of his distinctive style of humor, together with a sense of pure intensity. As he loves to tell his audiences, “they want to talk to you as much as you want to talk to them – it’s crowded up here!”

Many words have been used to describe John, from compassionate to insightful, humorous to tender, captivating to mesmerizing. His charismatic personality has become the trademark for his delivery technique, and his ability to link with spirit is a fascinating and breathtaking experience to witness.

2005 sees the publication of John’s third book, entitled:

“101 WAYS TO JUMP START YOUR INTUITION”

In 101 ways to Jump Start Your Intuition, John guides you through 101 quick and easy lessons to help you understand, develop, and work with that inner sense of intuition.
