Time for Prayer
Agnes and I camped out for the night on a low cliff over the ocean. We were on the coast north of Santa Barbara. There had been a warm Santa Ana condition. The tall oat grass had turned golden in the fall heat, and the unusually temperate wind had been blowing in from the desert in hot, sweet-smelling gusts. The wind had caressed us for hours like a hungry lover, relentless and soft.
Agnes woke me before dawn. We gathered stones for a medicine wheel and sat together within it as the sun blazed over the horizon. We sang to the rising sun, to the new dawn of woman; we praised the Great Spirit, mother earth, the powers of the four directions, and our ancestors; then we dedicated our ceremony to the dolphins. We held a vigil all that day, praying for our sister spirits on this mother earth. We prayed for the balance of the male and female within us all and we prayed for the animals and winged ones.

Dear Friends,
Every day is a good day for prayer and the sacred giveaway of ceremony. A giveaway is a sacred process of give and take. As a being of truth, you are aware of the life force that you take from the universe, and you give back that energy in like kind. (The Power Deck)
When you are out of doors working and playing in the summertime, take a moment each and every day to honor the divine presence in everything, to honor the miracles of life that are so abundant here on Mother Earth. When you do ceremony, you wake up the spirits of place and join your spirits as one. Even if your ceremony is as brief as plucking a strand of your own hair and giving it away to the Mother in thanks as a magnificent elk enters your field of view, or a prayer for the spirit of a dead animal in its process of transition, honor the miracle of life with prayer every time you are somewhere in nature, in other words, all of the time! I would very much like for you to join me now in prayer.
Great Spirit, whose voice we hear
In the winds and the trees,
Mother Earth, whose breath gives us life:
Help us to walk in beauty and strength,
And to learn the lessons that are hidden
In the stones and the trees
And the waters of the sea.
Give us the strength to fight
Our greatest enemy – ignorance.
Great Spirit, hear the sounds
Of our grateful hearts,
And help us to find
The wisdom and joy and power
That is locked within each of our souls.
We are the reflections of you, Great Spirit,
Join us on our path as we join you,
For all the days of our lives. Ho!

“Pray,” Ruby Plenty Chiefs said. “Prayer can change the world. Your light will affect all of those around you and give them the strength and the inspiration to go on and celebrate the magnificence of what they are.”
I dried my tears and held Agnes’s hand. I watched her beautiful face etched so deeply by time and experience. “For me,” I finally said, “prayer is the expression of innocence. It is our radiant bridge to Great Spirit. Through the grateful heart in innocence, all things are possible.”
The City of New Orleans and the entire Gulf Coast of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, like so many places in our world today, are in great need of life – of that which heals life, that which sustains life, that which reaffirms, renews and emboldens life. The Sisterhood of the Shields and I send prayers and healing light.
As you reach out to give help in whatever ways you are able, please remember the power of prayer and the power that you place in all that you when you are balanced on the Sacred Wheel. Remember the importance of moving from manifestation in the South, where we find ways to give whatever physical relief we are able, to spirit in the North, where we infuse ourselves and our efforts with inspiration and prayer, before returning again to the world of manifestation in the South. It is through this North/South transit that we truly walk in power.
Prayer for Strength
Great Mother Goddess, Sower of dreams, Of this fecund Mother Earth, Help me to experience your light In every moment of my life. Help me to experience your dream In my earth walk. As a beautiful rose growing in my being, Let me breathe in The perfume of your essence And your perfection, Permeating every cell in my body.
You have given me blood, Great Mother, Blood, the carrier of my future incarnations. Help me to serve you well, So that I may know my lifetimes As they have imprinted my spirit shield With the image of your face.
You are the power That motivates me, That brings me closer To my shaman center, And to my psychic equilibrium. You are the one Who fills me with inspiration, Who helps me to feel the rose within – The perfection of physicality And spirit manifested In my earth walk. You are a wrathful And a benevolent ruler. Help me not to fear The shadow side of myself, The dark side of my femininity. I am Crazy Woman, and I am the Rainbow Mother. I am Death Mother, and I am the Great Nurturing Mother. The sacred cross of feminine power Lives within me.
As I see your sacred face Reflected in the eyes Of my sisters and brothers, Great Mother Goddess, Give me the strength To follow your path, To feel your rose within me, To plant my seeds on this earth, And reap the wisdom as they grow. Help me to change and to be strong Throughout the coming year. Great Mother, I honor you All the days of my life. Ho!
Give with a heart and an intent that is one with Great Spirit, and wrap everything you do in the great gift of prayer.
A Prayer for the Children
As I look across the great expanse Of wilderness, I think of what is important and sacred in this life, And I think of the children. We are in a life where we must protect the children. The children are sacred. The children, beyond all others, Must be recognized and honored For their presence. The hope of the world is with them.
It is our responsibility To tear away the veils of ignorance For our children, so that they may learn What is real and what is true. A wilderness untouched by human hands is Like the map of spirit within a child. It is open to experience, to the newness of life. Let spirit imprint the souls of the children. It is we adults who change the face of growth In our children. We are the ones who Destroy the vision of the young. We take our will and ask our children to live In our shadow. We want our will to be theirs.
Great Spirit, help adults to understand the children. Let there be no harm. Great Spirit, carve a trail for the young ones, So that they may grow strong and free And full of light. Thank you Great Spirit, for hearing my words. I ask you for the children Who do not yet know how to pray. Help them to see your face and hear your words Forevermore. Ho!
As you move forward on your own path towards enlightenment, your light shines out around you as a beacon of hope and inspiration for others. Send your healing light along with whatever aid and assistance you may choose to give.
Please join together in sending your prayers to those who are in such great need and to our precious Mother Earth.

35 – Time – East
What is time that it has the power to change all that exists back into dust? What is this unseen force like the wind that can shape the land and our lives? Learn to play with time. Time is surreal, like fish swimming in treetops. A person of power knows how to arrange time. Put on your watch and be aware of the time at which you do everything. Watch the sun, the moon, the transit of the stars. Find out the time that Venus is lowest in the sky before dawn. Be aware of your cycles—when you get hungry, when you sleep. Our society is obsessed with time, so now “become” time. If you’re obsessed with something, it is better to explore it than to deny it. Then it is possible to give up your obsession and let a concept like time take its proper place in your life. Your power depends on your use of time.
Definition of the card
The painting is entitled Journey’s End. The symbolism of the fish in the treetops indicates the importance of the Tree of Life and the knowledge therein that we are, indeed, all one.
This is a teaching of the east. The Piscean era is symbolized by the fish, and it means that we are coming to the end of a period and are giving birth to a new aeon. Within this new birth, all possibility is at hand. Take your power now and try to understand what time really means to you on your path of heart. Do not waste your time; you only have a moment in this lifetime. On the other hand, you must have patience in order to create perfect timing.

PRAYER FOR WISDOM OF THE ELDERS
Great Elder Women, Great Wise Men,
Elders who encircle us in the physical dimension,
This earthly walk,
Thank you for your courage and your holy blessings.
As I look out at the desert,
Magnificent in its purple and gold shadows
Of the early morning,
The golden light recalls in my memory
The power and the blessings that the elders
Bestow on us all.
I thank you for your courage to live,
And to remain on this earthly plane.
With all that you see, with all that you hear,
You give us so much in your prayers,
In your understanding,
Sharing your power every step of the way.
As I look across the sand, I see the footsteps of
Those who have walked before us,
And I know the courage and the commitment
That it takes to stay on the path of heart.
Great Elder beings who have given so much,
This is a prayer of thanksgiving for who you are,
For so many of you are maligned for your
Beauty and your silence.
I honor your presence.
Just your existence and radiance illuminate our path
And bring us closer to Great Spirit
And to the magnificence that you are.
Without you, our trail would be arduous
Beyond imagination.
So few realize how you mark our trail,
Because what you do is done in silence.

Conception
When the sacred wheels come down it is called conception. At conception the light becomes brilliant and then chooses a color. I always know when a woman has conceived—because of the large and small lights. Power has entered her body. At death the wheel returns to outer space and the earthbound body returns to Mother Earth.
