[Initial important note: readers should see the MetaArts Archives for the last four columns especially, introducing medical astrology, the symbolisms of the four Elements and the planetary rulers involved.]
Tension is essential within the human condition. The anticipation between heartbeats will the muscles contract yet again?; the incredible interplay of strength, resistance, and balance to keep the body erect and in movement; the warning systems for body functions; the procreative drive for species reproduction … and so much more.
Tensions abound in the processes of personality development as well: the interaction with parental models to learn who we are and how we “should” behave; how we feel about ourselves, which conditions how we function to fulfill our individualized needs; how we think for maximum efficiency; how we incorporate what our world teaches us; how we learn to give and receive love; how we cooperate with others to form reciprocally sustaining relationships … and so much more.
The horoscope shows all of these considerations. Life challenges our natal circuitry continuously, for us to build through challenge, to take on strengths through confrontation, to build reinforcement and grace through environmental rewards; to learn efficiency through the avalanche of information constantly coming to our body from within and to our mind from without … and so much more.
Throughout our process of development, we face and we absorb myriad tensions. Some of them are most productive, forming the building blocks of life; some are debilitating, when they go “against” our instinctive needs, when we are “punished” by the environment. Praise from parents, teachers, bosses, religious leaders will reinforce behaviors and improve our developmental wholeness. We will get things together well and lastingly. But criticisms, confinement, coercion will frustrate the system and become internalized painfully. So-call negative constructs form in our behavior and identity formation, and they eventually ravage the system.
My thesis (thoroughly developed and presented in The Astrological Timing of Critical Illness) focuses on the concept of accumulated developmental deficit: as we grow, we internalize frustrations and hurts and rigors; systems start to work under heavy burdens; in league with the aging process, the body and its systems break down under the accumulating difficulties.
How Astrology Reveals Vulnerability
We know very well that aspects reveal connections between and among planets, that these planets are symbols of psychological needs and the behaviors to fulfill them (Mercury is our need to think a certain way for maximum efficiency; Venus, our need to relate; Mars, our need to apply energy individualistically, etc.). The aspect connections cover a full spectrum of developmental tensions among behaviors.
At the same time, the planets symbolize the parts of our body and the systems that keep it functioning and we have seen this cursorily in the last four columns in this series (see Archives).
Without doubt, tensions focused within the planetary constructs that incur frustrations over a lifetime will suggest strongly and reliably parts of the body and bodily systems that will break down within the aging process. This will occur as Solar Arcs and major transits exacerbate the natal predisposition.
Initial considerations: the Ascendant symbolizes our health center. The Sun is the symbol of our life energy. The 12th House is unequivocally the zone of critical illness, and its ruler is extremely telling in the symbology of illness development. The planets Pluto, Neptune, Saturn, and then Mars in that order are proved to be key symbolic catalysts of the occurrence of critical illness
Any strong planetary placement tightly conjoining or tightly squaring (quindecile or opposition as well) the Ascendant will suggest a particular natal vulnerability to a weakness in that part of the body symbolized by the Ascendant Sign or the planet (and the sign it rules). Similarly, any very strong aspect to the Sun will register a potential for the heart to be born with or to develop weakness; and/or the part of the body symbolized by the sign in which the Sun is placed. Initial considerations should focus similarly on the ruler of the 12th House.

General Schwarzkopf’s natal disposition for potential critical illness is extremely clear. The Ascendant receives a quindecile aspect from both Saturn-retrograde and from the Moon, the ruler of the twelfth House. Further, we see the high-tension focus in the twelfth through the conjunction of Mars-Pluto, rulers of the parental axis, and that the Moon, ruler of the 12th, opposes that conjunction tension! --We are immediately alerted that, during life development, the likelihood of prostate problems (Pluto, exacerbated by Mars), heart disease (Leo Ascendant) and the knees (Saturn, and the Moon in Capricorn) is very, very high. We anticipate the picture being harshly illuminated sometime even several timesin life through Solar Arcs and Transits.
The picture shown here is for the time in mid-March 1994, when the General went to the hospital to have his knees checked. At the same time, a routine PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) blood test and other tests for prostate health were conducted. The results came in; the General was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer.
Note that SA Neptune was squaring the Ascendant, and SA Saturn was applying to square with Mars-Pluto. Not shown in this double-ringed chart is that the vulnerability was further focused most powerfully through transiting Pluto at 28 Scorpio exactly square the Sun and transiting Uranus-Neptune in 23-25 Capricorn tightly conjunct the natal Moon, ruler of the 12th and opposed the natal signals of Mars-Pluto in the 12th.
The astrology could have been seen some years beforehand, of course, and helpful warning could have been served.
Note that, at the same time, the SA Sun was nearing the fourth cusp; this would also be a time in which the General could anticipate illumination and success in life. The prostate cancer changed the General’s life: after recovery from surgery, he accepted the invitation of Stephen Spielberg to head up a foundation to fight childhood leukemia. With Sun=Midheaven exactly, the General appeared on the cover of TIME magazine announcing his new direction in life!
