Astrologer's Notes:

Don’t Put the
Cart Before the Horse

by Basil Fearrington
Early on in our astrological studies, we learn the basics: Signs, planets, Houses, and aspects dominate the learning process. When we begin to synthesize all that we learn, our eyes learn to make quick assumptions and deductions in the first moments of seeing a horoscope, just as they do when seeing a person, place, or thing for the first time. For example, a horoscope with Saturn conjunct Venus in the 7th House clearly keys your mind into an assumption of something cloudy regarding relationships. Or, if you see a horoscope with the Sun and Jupiter on the Midheaven trined by the Moon, you will tend to think in terms that are fortunate within career concerns. These kinds of deductions and assumptions are automatic with all astrologers and because of it we tend to begin to see horoscopes as kinds of living, breathing entities instead of symbols on a piece of paper that reflect the potential of a person, place, event, etc. We expect the person to be what we see in the horoscope, which is the wrong way to think!

Mars is in Sagittarius in the 11th House of my horoscope. There was a time in my life many years ago when I did not know what that meant. My references were whatever books I could find or any contact with someone more experienced in astrology that was I. In those early days of learning, I cannot begin to tell you how many astrologers told me that I would never (!) have a friend or that if I end up with any friends at all, they will be mostly of an athletic nature, would be very competitive, etc. While it is easy to see why statements like these are made (they are typical in most of the poorly written beginning or cookbooks), the reality is that astrology becomes irresponsible and unhelpful when used this way because of the assumption that everything in the horoscope is or will become everything in the life through some act of fate delivered by one’s horoscope. Make no mistake about it – there is the life being lived and there is the horoscope. As much as the two often bear a strong resemblance to each other, they are often strangers. Life and horoscope do not have to resemble each other. This is one of the most important perspectives for an astrologer at any level to have.

Example

Take a look at the horoscope shown here. The very first thing to catch your eyes is the strong presence of planets in the 12th House. Stop! What are you thinking? What impressions come to your mind? Reflect on your first impressions for a few moments before you continue reading here.

This is the horoscope of a female. Quite typically and understandably, your mind immediately has categorized this person in terms of what you’ve learned in one book or another about the 12th House because it is so strongly emphasized here.

Back when I first began to study astrology, this horoscope would have been seen as a “bad” or unlucky horoscope due to the accentuation of planets in the 12th House, the lack of “good” aspects, etc. These impressions are projected onto the person and so your expectation is not the same as it would be if this same group of planets was in the 10th House. The expectation is not necessarily a day at the beach if you use the older, fatalistic astrology as a barometer in analysis. You are not thinking that this is the horoscope of someone as fortunate as Bill Gates or Oprah Winfrey and indeed it is not the horoscope of Bill Gates or Oprah Winfrey. It is the horoscope of Mariah Carey!

As someone who has been active in the music business for 30+ years and is a kind of PhD graduate of the business, I cannot begin to tell you how successful Mariah Carey is. She is as successful in music as Oprah is as a talk show host or as Bill Gates in the development of a software business..

In the history of music, when you speak of the largest, most successful names of all time, you’re speaking of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Elvis, Michael Jackson, and perhaps Garth Brooks. Certainly, as far as female singers are concerned, they come no bigger than Barbara Streisand, Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin, and Celine Dion. With the exception of Elvis, Mariah Carey’s record success has eclipsed every artist that has ever recorded a song or album because she has seventeen #1 hits, which ties with Elvis for the most that any artist has ever had. This is colossally successful and you clearly wouldn’t begin to get the sense of this from your first impression of her horoscope (The data, directly from her: March 27, 1970 at 7:27 AM in Long Island, New York).

Knowing that this is Mariah Carey’s horoscope, you now have to adjust your initial impression and analyze the horoscope so that the symbols fit what you know about the reality of her life. This is what should happen with every horoscope that you analyze! You must see the horoscope in terms of the person it represents and not assume that the person is going to be what an astrology book tells you about astrology.

A more advanced look at Carey’s horoscope might proceed as follows:

The first impression suggests an orientation to the world that is defensive and self-protective (eastern hemisphere emphasis). When a person adopts this posture in life, there is a reason for it and this is where you’d get your consultation started. You have to wonder what the source of the defensive posture is and that is where your consultation with her would begin. (In almost every case of an orientation to defensiveness, the source comes from something that did or did not take place with a parent or the environment during the formative years of development).

The core energy (Sun in Aries) is a “me-first,” ego oriented energy, sharply accentuated by Uranus’ opposition to the Sun to suggest a great awareness of individuation at the core of her being.

The ego-oriented, individuated core shows itself to others in a personality (Moon in Scorpio) that takes itself seriously, needs control, and is usually fairly private. Neptune’s conjunction to the Moon softens and idealizes the personality presentation which is then shown to others through a structured, firm, determined, affable manner. The Moon’s position in VII, conjoined by Neptune, suggests a vulnerability in relationships and a tendency to present the personality to others in a way that is other than it seems. The midpoint pictures, AP=Sun/Plu=Ven/Node=Ura/Plu adds power, aesthetics, and independence to the presentation of Self. Aesthetics and individuation are further corroborated by Moon/Ura=Ven/Mars=Sun/Moon.

If you read last month’s essay, you’ve learned to spot a pattern in horoscopes based on human psychology. You look for the parental tension within the parental axis. That leads you to expect tension with identity development (1st House), self-esteem (2nd House), relationships (7th House), lovability (11th House) and the giving of love, romantically and sexually. The 8th House quite often takes the place of the 2nd or 5th within this pattern. This pattern or parts of it will tend to be present in almost every horoscope that you analyze.

In Carey’s horoscope, the “Neptunized Moon” is the ruler of IV. Saturn, ruler of X, is opposed by Jupiter. Parental tension is clearly shown and we have to suspect that this is the reason for the defensive orientation to others. Although this horoscope doesn’t completely follow the suggested pattern, we can see the concerns with self-esteem, relationships, lovability, giving love, etc. These concerns are normal and natural when parental tension has been strongly absorbed. Carey’s formative years of development were nothing short of a horror story. As the child of an inter-racial marriage, her family experienced much hatred against them. Her older sister was a prostitute. It was far, far from a happy, fulfilling upbringing. In fact, it was about as dysfunctional as it can get. To have come from such negativity to profound success in a very difficult business is remarkable.

There are aspect measurements in Carey’s horoscope that are most telling. For starters, there are 8 quindecile measurements (Moon-Asc; Moon-Mars; Mercury-Pluto; Venus-Jupiter; Venus-Uranus; Mars-Neptune; Neptune-Asc; Pluto-Node)!!! If you are unfamiliar with the quindecile, it measures 165 degrees and symbolizes a tremendously intense, obsessive, compulsive energy in relationship to the planets involved. When these aspects are well-managed, they reflect great towers of inner strength, fortitude and power. This astrologer has never seen a horoscope with as many quindeciles in it. When seen through the reality of Carey’s tremendous achievements in her career, we would have to see these measurements as the symbol of tremendous drive and direction

Saturn opposes Jupiter, always an aspect that suggests a necessity to go out of the way to right wrongs, prove points, etc. It is an indication that she will fight for what she thinks is right, especially when there is a perceived or actual injustice. Jupiter, as ruler of VIII, ties all of this into how she feels when confronted with the self-worth structures and values of others. Coming from her background, there HAD to be insecurities in relationship to others.

Venus is in Mutual Reception with Mars upon the Ascendant. This gives the flavor of an aspect relationship between the two planets even though none exists, and has much to do with the symbol of the sexual charisma that Carey enjoys showing off. In fact, Venus in Aries is unaspected here, which means that the idea of attracting attention, flirting, doing things to prove her attractiveness for purposes of ego endorsement is just running away with her. (You rarely, if ever, see Carey in public looking less than very sexy, often to a point of dressing too revealingly). And since it is square the Midheaven and disposes of the Midheaven’s ruler) it is a strong vocational symbol (especially with Sun and Mercury quintile Midheaven). Venus dominates here like an aching tooth in the mouth.

There is much more to analyze, for sure. But the point here is that a lot has happened cerebrally from your point of a first impression to this point in this essay. Making assumptions and getting first impressions is a normal function of knowing astrology. But the idea is to take what you have learned about the person and about life and THEN apply the astrology to the life as it is in reality.

There is a person somewhere in the world with nearly the same or the same horoscope as Mariah Carey’s. That person will not have the highly developed musical skill. He or she will not have been born in a music metropolis with a mother who was a singer. The person might have been born in a remote area of the planet on a farm or is a monk in Thailand. Perhaps the person was born into a family where the tradition is to be a lawyer, doctor, or dentist. For these people, the symbols of the horoscope take on a different meaning than is the case with Carey because the life’s reality is different.

There is an old saying that you should never put the cart before the horse. In astrological terms, you should never put the horoscope before the person!
