Drop And Give Me Twenty
|
|
 |
by Rev. David Ault |

I heard her say, " God give me strength."
How odd that sounded to me now. For it seemed that perhaps she believed that strength was a quality outside of herself. Of course that started me thinking about separation, duality and how many of us live much or a part of our life experience in that state of belief - those familiar limitations that seem to rise effortless like resilient weeds with our "somedays" and "I can't's" and fantasies of it will get better when...
With a typical garden variety weed there are choices of what to do. First we have to want to remove it. Then there is a deliberate intent to remove it - an action that follows the wanting. And we know that the weed is no match to us once the desire and action meet. There is a deep inner knowing within us - that place that has never been violated - where we get, without question, that we are more powerful than the weed.
The same holds true for our action and desire in weeding out our self-doubts and loyalties of separation - those that seem to sprout and multiply with little effort in the gardens of our minds.
We have to want to stop their growth. We have to recognize that we are more powerful than any negative thought.
How uncomfortable or unhappy do we have to be before we reach an irrepressible desire to faithfully "pluck" ourselves out of the beliefs of separation and see that the answers already exist within us - where we continually affirm and see our alignment with "I AM strength" rather than "God give me strength?"
When the desire for change becomes strong enough, then it is simply a matter of training - even more accurately re-training; re-training our minds to re-welcome what it is that our divine soul already knows is true.
This re-training does not to have to be held in the light of difficulty. We have trained all our lives. We trained to walk, talk, eat with a fork and spoon, tie our shoes, tell time.....
When we look back on these accomplishments do we declare, "Oh, that was so traumatic - so difficult!"
I doubt it. We learned these things because they brought us freedom to progress in our world. It was important enough to us to learn and master them. The training for their mastery seems absolutely logical.
Does our spiritual freedom not carry the same importance and logic?
I remember motivational author Marianne Williamson saying, "There is no difference in difficulty between healing a paper cut and healing cancer. It's just that we believe there is.
There is no difference in difficulty in learning how to tie a shoe than there is in removing the pattern of negative thinking.
In one of my recent classes, a woman broke down in frustration and spoke about her lifelong struggle with being overweight. Her memories of being "abnormal" started as early as three. She had calculated that throughout her years on the dieting journey, she had gained and lost nearly a 1000 pounds. When she experienced a thinner frame, better jobs had appeared and being "loved" had surfaced giving her a glimpse of its possibility. When she regained the weight, the jobs would evaporate much like the affections of the world. The return to her undesirable state as she called it had left her with an undercurrent of impenetrable futility. Yet, here she was, week after week. in another spiritual class - looking at spiritual principles - voicing spiritual affirmations.
Her attendance told me that there was still some semblance of belief that within her existed the possibility for peace and happiness.
So with her permission, we began to dialogue, as a class, about all of her "God' qualities. Her fellow classmates went around and simply spoke the truth about her - her beautiful inner light, her smile, her amazing work ethic, her sense of humor, the beauty of her shimmering silvered hair.
"Enough!" she laughed through tears. And I knew that her willingness and desire to weed her mental garden had strengthened.
Much of her association with getting and receiving love had been woven into how much she weighed. Her mother had constantly berated her about her looks as a child and she felt her withhold of affection, approval and love as an indication that her appearance was the reason. Her solution - fix the appearance - get the love.
Yet, authentic love knows no conditions. And each of us with our similar experiences, associations and projections keep ourselves in arms length from the experience of our worthiness simply due to the belief that we are essentially not enough.
That belief is a weed - plain and simple. That's all.
Every time we agree with that by our self-deprecations, harmful acting out, denial of our good, we nurture that weed.
How do we stop?
We have to want to.
We have to feel we deserve the freedom that comes with the change. We have to know that we can handle our greatness.
We wouldn't be here - on this planet - in this body - at this time - if we couldn't handle the greatness of our divine destinies. Otherwise why would we have chosen to come and have this earthly experience?
Again, we have to want the experience of freedom that nurturing our divinity brings.
The experience of freedom and spiritual mastery simply takes training.
We train our minds to absorb language, mobility, skills, parenting, talents - the same applies for our thoughts - we train ourselves to drop those that tell a different story than the one our soul knows as true. Soon, the training becomes instinctual just as dropping a hot potato becomes instinctual.
My assignment to the woman in class was a commitment to training. Not physical training in terms of how many reps at a gym or even training in terms of her caloric intake. This was mental training. She had to go back to that place that loved and adored her being long before weight was ever an issue.
We decided that it was time to develop a new practice - our solution; The Drop and Give Me Twenty exercise. When the old, stale, limited, worried-filled thought appears, DROP IT - just like a hot potato, and give voice to twenty things about you that are great, unique, special.
1. I am wonderfully detailed in my work and do an excellent job with my assignments.
2. I am an excellent cook and make wonderful dishes that bring "ooh's" and "ah's" to everyone who partakes of them.
3. I have a wonderful artistic eye for decorating and can create beautiful environments.
4. I am a wonderful listener and people feel seen and heard in my presence.
5. I have beautiful eyes.
6. I have a sharp mind that loves to problem solve.
7. I am a responsible driver.
….and on and on and on.
With this new training, each of us may discover that nearly every minute of every day is an ongoing focus on our good qualities because equal commitment was placed on the frequency of focusing on the bad.
Yet, with each day, the training will usher in its reward by the outer worlds conditions. The more you focus on your true essential qualities of unique greatness, the more the world matches you in that recognition. The training begins to take on an exhilaration much like the exhilaration a musician feels after continued practice on a composition.
Suddenly the details of our lives take on an ease - our abundance seems effortlessly, our physical stability and energy improves. Too, our relationships improve and the palpable quality of this earthly experience heightens.
The woman in class held up a mirror for all of us to examine our own frustrations and loyalties to lack.
I was reminded, by her willingness to share, that I no longer wish to wait till circumstances become unbearable before I make the decision to drop the patterned negativity and re-focus on the good.
Isn't it time we all started training? What have we got to lose but our continued separation from our greatness. Seems like motivation enough for me.
Right now - drop and give me twenty!
