#4. Organizing your Measurements for Consultation
----Check the Sun/Moon midpoint
|
 |
by Noel Tyl

We know that the Sun and Moon are all-important: the Sun is the grand symbol of our entire planetary system; it is our life energy, and it registers dynamically in a blend with the Moon. The two together are our eyes into life; our activity and development are generated from their symbolic potentials.
Understanding an image of the Sun-Moon blend [please see all 144 of them discussed in Synthesis & Counseling in Astrology, pages 65-102] is so revelatory that it can be the beginning orientation for any horoscope analysis. Modifications to the Sun-Moon potentials by aspect begin the process of individuation.
At our birth, the Sun symbolizes the father and the Moon, the mother, of course. When the Sun and Moon are in tight square at our birth, it is a transit commentary on the relationship of our parents, one to the other, at that birth time. The square suggests strongly that the parents were “at odds” with each other, that they were quite possibly in a desperate state of tension, argumentative, combative. Very often, the tension so symbolized was about the impending birth!
Was the child wanted? Was there a fight about possible abortion? Was the child to be viewed as a “mistake”?
These are harsh observations, to be sure, but they are conspicuously empirically valid. The deep significance manifests when one of the parents later projects upset onto the child and blurts out punitively the facts of all that tension, i.e., “We never wanted you; I wish you hadn’t been born.” This shock touches the life forever. It is not uncommon.
As we develop, the symbolism of the Moon takes on powerful, pervasive character force as the focus of our reigning need, what we need individually to feel fulfilled in life. That reigning need is of great importance: using the characteristic energy of the Sun in a particular sign, it propels our life development dramatically in terms of the sign it is in.
Tom Cruise, for example has the Sun in Cancer and the Moon in Leo: “The energy for emotional security takes on self-dramatization, acting out the needs for appreciation and love. There is a show of ‘rightness’ that helps with understanding and acceptance by others. The impression of pride and self-confidence is given and others believe it.” In other words, the reigning need to be adored and applauded drives the life into self-dramatizing activities in order to establish emotional security.
Angelina Joli has the Sun in Gemini and the Moon in Aries: “The energies to diversify and to communicate excite the reigning need to be important, to be ‘Number One.’ There can be a shrewdness, a keenness, and an abundance of energy to put the self forward with great confidence.” And all of it is engineered to establish oneself as the person of prime importance anywhere. How will others react to such energy expression? Will the parents have been able to understand and support this oh-so-powerful drive?
As development continues into life, there is our great need for relationships, for reciprocal exchange of personal resources. In so many ways, to fulfill our needs, we need others to help us. The Sun-Moon take on the extension of their symbolism to show relationship. Most specifically, the Sun/Moon midpoint [a synthesis point between the luminaries] establishes a most sensitive axis in our life, with regard to relationships. Any planet square or conjunct this Sun/Moon midpoint axis in the natal horoscope will enter into mainstream currents of life and very often run away with the horoscope; it becomes dominant.
We then see that strong transits to the Sun/Moon midpoint suggest development times of relationship upset, in the main. Similarly, Arcs to conjunction or square or quindecile with the axis say the same, usually over a longer period of time than the transit.
Pluto=Sun/Moon: a power struggle in relationship. Neptune=Sun/Moon: possible duplicity, drugs-alcohol disruption, deception, misunderstandings. Uranus=Sun/Moon, intense fracture of relationship, disruptive independence. With Saturn, deep problems, depressive muffling of relationship. Mars: argument, friction, upset.

Anticipating Developmental Difficulty Using “rapport” arc projections [see last month’s essay], it is a very easy matter to project a planet to the natal Sun/Moon midpoint. Look at Tom Cruise’s horoscope: his Sun/Moon midpoint is at 22 Cancer 02.
See Cruise’s natal Pluto at 8 Virgo. Project it into the next (cardinal) sign to 22 Libra. This will give Solar Arc Pluto square the natal Sun/Moon midpoint axis. The measurement is 44 degrees, which, because of the birth date between March and September, i.e., a “slow arc”, will take 45-46 years to arrive. In our general projection, we refer to age 46, which takes place in 2008.
When we check the ephemeris for any possible trigger transits at that time, we find tr Neptune protractedly conjunct Venus, ruler of his 7th throughout 2006 and 2007, and into 2008. And we see transiting Saturn conjunct Pluto, ruler of his Ascendant, especially in summer of 2008. We do some more careful measurements, and we establish exactly that Pluto=Sun/Moon in July 2008.
What does this tell us? The Neptune transit to the ruler of the 7th can suggest idealized bliss and then, OR the bubble bursting in their recently achieved and highly publicized relationship union. Pressure is on Cruise himself as well, his identity development, especially since this time period sees the accumulated Solar Arc semisquare build-up (forty-five degrees), a major time of shifting gears. All of this will be focused gradually and then dramatically into the relationship at mid-summer 2008.
In consultation with Tom Cruise, the astrologer would investigate previous strong contact with Sun/Moon. For instance, what were relationship dynamics like in August-September 2004, February-May 2005, when transiting Saturn was in 22 Cancer? In 1994, with transiting Neptune at 22 Capricorn? Astrology investigates precedent and projects advisories.

In Angelina Joli’s horoscope, Sun/Moon is at 13 Taurus 15. As you get into the horoscope’s aspect measurements, you will see that natal Uranus at 28 Libra 48 is in exact quindecile to Sun/Moon! This is a measurement of intensely disruptive potential in relationships; intense, dramatic, sudden; impulsive upset, breakup, demands for independence. It is easy to see this as an echo of activities attached to the powerfully augmented Moon-in-Aries complex!
There are many rapport arc projections here, involving Sun/Moon. With experience and confidence, you can see these so quickly: Uranus advances fifteen degrees to opposition with Sun/Moon when Joli is 15. Just before that, precociously surely, a relationship was dramatically forced apart with tr Pluto=Sun/Moon at age 14! --Then see tr Uranus=Sun/Moon in 1998; tr Saturn=Sun/Moon in 1999; SA Saturn=Sun/Moon at 27 in 2002; tr Neptune=Sun/Moon in 2004.
Now, looking ahead, we see Mars=Sun/Moon exact in June 2009 when Joli is 34 years old. At the same time, tr Saturn is square her Mercury, ruling the 3rd and 12th (depressive thinking, frustration).
Again, the past contacts with Sun/Moon will establish a frame of reference for the June ’09 Arc picture.
--Awareness and skill with Sun/Moon are essential for the astrologer; the results are revelatory; the understandings are extremely helpful.
